Pit-bull owners charged with Manslaughter after death of senior citizen

Leon Lopez

Shelda Patnett

A Tropical Park senior citizen was killed by two vicious pit bulls three weeks ago. Sixty-five year old Edmund Spain was attacked on May thirty-first while at his home in the Tropical Park area. He sustained injuries to the face and body and was hospitalized but died from the injuries some six days later. Today, almost three weeks after the incident, twenty-five year old B.D.F. Soldier, Leon Lopez, and his thirty-six year old common-law-wife, a Sales Clerk, Shelda Patnett were taken to court. The couple was unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate, Margaret Gabb McKenzie and were both charged with Manslaughter, Causing Death by Careless Conduct and Keeping Un-muzzled Ferocious Dogs. The Chief Magistrate offered bail in the sum of four thousand dollars which they met. Before leaving the courtroom, Patnett said that at the time of the incident, they were not at home.  But the Chief Magistrate replied that this will be dealt with during the trial. While both refused to comment on camera, the sister of Patnett, Deborah Frazer, told News Five that she had been at Spain’s bedside since the incident occurred and that she was shocked when he died due to the injuries. She claimed that they visited him at the hospital regularly and were told that Spain’s condition was not life threatening.  According to Frazer, Spain was injured on his wrists and lip.

You value your Pitbull more than you value someone else’s life then deal with the consequence.

so can I get a bail for ‘Manslaughter” charges? I know if I get caught with a stick of weed I’d be sentenced to jail right away, or no?

  3. Islander says:

If you plea guilty to the stick of weed you get a fine. If you plea not guilty you get bail and a new court date.

Bail for manslaughter is ok by me, cause it can be a charge arising from a car accident, or the use of excessive force while defending yourself and many other situations where I personally believe bail should be available.

It is sad that Mr. Spain died, but it makes me wonder…If he was taken to the hospital right away after he was bitten by the dogs. How exactly was he able to get septic so quick? Me thinks that the Hospital or Doctors who tended to Mr. Spain have a lil explaining to do.

The lady should be fined cause you can see that she truly was sorry, the guy should be confined. That will wipe that silly smirk off his face.

If their dogs had not bitten Mr Spain, he would not have been in the hospital. Sorry or not, she had the vicious dogs for a reason, that it backfired is a consequence she has to deal with.

The sister’s stories are contradictory. Take 24/7 out of the vocabulary. Her poor sister called the hospital on her lunch. Sweetie, her dogs made a meal out of an old man, he died. Get a grip!

Someone needs to be punished; a hefty fine, paying for burial expenses & whatever treatment he got at the hospital no matter how inadequate & they cannot have a dog until they become seniors & Mr Spain’s descendants choose the breed. When did we become so heartless we stand in front of a camera to tell our side instead of admitting to making a mistake & telling the family you’re sorry.

I think this charge against the owners of the dog is fair. Wheather they are sorry or not a man is dead because of their dog.

    are those dogs still alive?
