Was it poverty or electrocution that killed Emelio Orellano?
Shoddy electrical connections led to the death of a man earlier today in Belize City. Emelio Orellano was electrocuted while he was trying to connect electricity to his humble abode. While the connection was illegal, there is more to the story than meets the eye. Orellano and his common-law wife, like many of the families in the Antelope Street Extension area, have been squatting on land near the Lord Ridge Cemetery for many years and have been trying to make life with the little they earn. News Five’s Marion Ali was at the scene when police moved his body and then she headed to Roaring Creek Village to visit his family that has been beset by frequent deaths.

Emelio Antonio Orellano, also known as “Fana” and his common-law wife of ten years, Carmita Tasher, have been squatting on land in the Antelope Street area near the Lord Ridge Cemetery for over two years. Like the other twenty or so families who live in the area, he has been getting energy supply from individual connections that they have made from the street to their humble homes, which are located several yards from the street in an overgrown area and accessed only by trails of flimsy London bridges. Because the illegal connections frequently become loose, when Orellano arrived home intoxicated after midnight and discovered this was the case, he decided to reconnect the supply to his house. But bad luck struck.

Tasher says it was another neighbor who went to check the area where they connected their electrical line and that’s where he found Orellano in the swamp dead. She explained that life has been difficult for them and that’s why they decided to squat on the land.

“I mi want my own place right and I noh want pay rent and so…”

It is not an easy time for the Orellano family of Roaring Creek, who has lost three members in the last eight months. In September of 2009 another brother, Miguel Mendoza was murdered in Valley of Peace and just last week it was an uncle who passed away. But this latest tragedy is really affecting Orellano’s teenage daughter, Samantha.

I wish that …… would just post their news in english instead of creole, so hard to read, really.
This is so sad to see that people are still living in such povery, no one deserve to live and die this way.
rest in peace.
it really breaks hearts to see the level of life they live. but really drunk was not the correct time to do it. anyways he’s gone left a young teen to his comm-law wife to take care. lets pray this family can cope with the lose of the love one and to overcome the harsh life they go through. business people be kind at least give this lady a job so she can mantain her young teen and herself please. we who have the commodity good of having a level of life a little better even do we pay rent we still don’t reach their level. and this is really sad. Lord bless this lady to never give up and may she have to survive with the basic needs for her and her daughter.
This shud not be happening in 2010!
Spending on Rum caused Poverty and as a result he got electrocuted.. simple!
How could Belize be in MILLION’s of dollars in debt and still have people living in this form of poverty, where is ALL this money going, oh i forgot in the politican’s pocket. Then they want to know why the crime rate is so high, you get killed tring to some electricity for your family. In 2010 the people of this small country should not live like this, I had freinds that live in homes that had “london bridges” when I left Belize in 1995 and is so disheartening to see that people are still in this form of poverty when the politions live comfortably.
My cousin recommended this blog and she was totally right keep up the fantastic work!
