Tropical storm watch in effect for the coast of Belize

The first weather system for the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane season formed into a Tropical Depression this afternoon. What’s worse, it’s heading our way this weekend and the amount of rainfall it could dump over flood-prone areas can create flash-flood conditions for people living in those areas. The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has put into effect a Tropical Storm watch for the entire coast of Belize since three o’clock this afternoon. According to NEMO, tropical storm conditions are likely to affect the country within the next thirty-six hours. Marion Ali took a trip to the National Meteorological Service headquarters today to find out the projected track that this weather system is taking.  Here’s her report.

Marion Ali, Reporting

The radar at the National Met Service shows Tropical Depression number one crossing the Western Caribbean Sea.  If it keeps its west north westerly track, it is expected to cross over Belize late Saturday.

Derrick Rudon, Meteorologist

“There is a high chance for it to develop into a tropical depression because conditions are right.  There is an upper level anticyclone right over the northwest Caribbean Sea that provides the outflow aloft and the sea surface temperatures are warm.  It has moved little, it maybe has drifted to the west but it hasn’t moved a whole lot over the last twenty-four hours.  But the projections are for it to move generally to the west northwest and with this low centre passing either just north of Belize over northern Belize sometime late Saturday.”

Because the system is more stationary than it is moving, it has a seventy percent chance of strengthening into a tropical storm.  Meteorologist Derrick Rudon says this could cause greater floods in the flood-prone areas.

Derrick Rudon

“The models are suggesting that we could get three to four inches of rainfall per day and if that happens, especially in a short period of time then we could see some flooding or flash-flooding”

Marion Ali

“In what areas specifically?”

Derrick Rudon

“The low lying areas and the flood-prone areas, like what we saw the last time; southern Belize and Stann Creek District.  People on farms with cattle and so on should – if they know they live near flood-prone areas they should be prepared to move their cattle to higher ground.”

Rudon says people living in these vulnerable areas should be on the alert, stay tuned to the radio for NEMO bulletins, monitor the creeks and rivers near you and be prepared to evacuate immediately if the need arises. Reporting for News Five, I am Marion Ali.

If the system develops into a tropical storm, it will be called Alex, the first storm for the 2010 hurricane season.  More on the storm coming up in the weather report later in this newscast.

This Storm is only the second warning, Hurricane Mitch in 1998 was the first, coming in to
the 21st century. Belize is no stranger to dangerous hurricanes 1931 1961. I think hard headed
people need Mother Earth to Chastise them, that is the only way for some to get the sense. We’ve
been watching all the Negative things thats been going on in that part of Mother Earth, you
people must think does (Ancient Olmec Pyramids) are there for a decorations. Galatians Ch 6 ver 7

LOL at Stygian. And the international media aren’t guilty of sensationalizing storms?!!!! HAAAAA! You’re funny.

  8. maddyvandijk says:

perhaps we should all be lucky that the storm took sympathy on Belize and left no real harm in it’s path, regardless of all the evil happening there these days.

Although I can feel your frustration poster, lets not forget that there are still some belizeans living in belize right now that are ok people.

Casfor i dont know you, you don’t know me, but from the comments you made tell’s
just the kind of hu-man you are. From the the heart the mouth speaks. Maybe you
should teach the uninformed about Global Circulation Patterns. Teach us,
instead of talking about tosh, butt, nutter and what ever. By the way I was born in
Amexem (Belize) Center of America. And by the way, I do not need to wait for
the Mother Ship to land, because I am the pilot.
