Ex-prison officer pleads guilty to Drug trafficking

Miguel Choc

This morning at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, a former ex-prison officer changed his not guilty plea to guilty and was slapped with the maximum fine of ten thousand dollars for drug related offences. This goes back to a bust last November at the Hattieville Prison, when Prison Officer, Miguel Choc was found with seventeen plus ounces of cannabis.  Choc asked for leniency and because he had no other convictions, Magistrate Dorothy Flowers imposed the fine to be paid by December thirty-first. Choc was busted when another prison officer conducted a routine check and found the drug on him. Choc was not as lucky as twenty-one year old convicted prisoner, Julian Willoughby, who had drug trafficking charges withdrawn against him when a police officer failed to testify. Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer struck out the matter and Willoughby was freed of that charge but had to return to prison to complete a sentence for robbery.

What action will be taken against this offficer who failed to show up to testify in a drug case? He was the arresting officer does he not have a duty to badge of a peace officer to testify. Why is he necessary to the Police Department if he is not performing his proper duty. He should be charged and fired. Start getting tough on these cowards who only take a paycheck and fail to perform.
