Victim says she would recognize her attacker in a crowd of 1000

Also in court, a land surveyor accused in a 2009 robbery was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. What sealed twenty-three year old Lionel Baizar’s conviction was the testimony of his victim, fifty-two year Elida Sabio. She told the court that on March twenty-third of 2009 she was on Central American Boulevard at about five-thirty a.m. when Baizar approached her with a handgun and robbed her of a pair of gold earrings and silver bangles. Sabio described her attacker as a “red skinned man with braids in his hair” and a scar over his left eye. Baizar denied that he robbed Sabio and claimed he was relaxing at home along with his pregnant sister. But Sabio said she was a hundred percent certain of his identity because she remembered his face so well. She even asserted that if a thousand men were lined up in front of her, she would still identify Baizar as her attacker. Meanwhile, Baizar’s sister who would have corroborated his alibi did not show up to court. Magistrate Kathleen Lewis was satisfied with the evidence against the accused and immediately handed down the five years sentence. Baizar has another case before the court for a May twenty-eighth incident in which he allegedly robbed and assaulted Hugh Meighan, a taxi driver.

Belize needs to follow the steps South Africa has taken during the world cup regarding arrests. They established a special police and judicial program that has arrested people face trail within a few days. Belize must implement a similar temporary and EMERGENCY measure so to clean up this beautiful country of all the thugs and sum that infect the streets! TIme to take some action!
