Shane Young’s real broken heart: can you help?
Four years ago, at age twenty-two, Shane Young found out that he has pulmonary cavity, which in layman’s terms is known as a hole in his heart. He had to undergo surgery bit his condition has since limited his abilities and Young is unable to work, which means he cannot provide for himself or take care of his medical bills. And to make a difficult situation even tougher, Young’s heart condition has now worsened. He is in urgent need of a second surgery that he simply cannot afford so he came to our studios to ask the public for financial help.
Shane Young, Endocarditis Patient
“I travel wid suga, diabetes, and I have wah heart problem. I have wah infection round mi heart called endocarditis which cause wah hole inna mi heart fi leak.”

I have to pay fi di surgery and I don’t have the ends or the means fi do it. I can’t work neither, I’m in and out ah di hospital. so I just di look fi wah lee help.”
Delahnie Bain
“How much is this surgery going to cost?”
Shane Young
“The surgery dah fifteen thousand dollars fi di surgery, just fi di repair.”
Delahnie Bain
“And then there’s transport costs as well.”
Shane Young
“Yeah, and I don’t know how much the transport is going to cost because I haven’t looked into it as yet. But now di doctors dehn di try talk to other doctors fi si which part I really could go fi get it done di quickest.”
Delahnie Bain
“How soon do you need to get this done?”

“As soon as possible because I already gone through one surgery before. Dehn only did a repair but now dehn seh dehn need fi replace di valve since it’s leaking so bad; so as soon as possible.”
Delahnie Bain
“How has this affected—how has this changed your life in the last four years?”
Shane Young
“Well, I can’t work now because ih mek I get short ah breath, I weak, and plus I got diabetes. Di two, when dehn combine together dah noh nothing really good. Dah just di thing, I can’t work fi provide fi mi self like I want to or move round freely so dat’s why I di ask fi di help.”
Delahnie Bain
“So how have you been handling the medical bills?”
Shane Young
“Well, right now I know Karl Heusner mussy got wah big bill fi me cause I’ve been back in Belize bout wah year and a half and I’ve been in and out ah di hospital bout eight or nine times already.”
Young can be reached via his mother, Dorothy Lewis, at 600-2621 by anyone willing and able to assist him.

I can identify with Mr. Young’s condition and would like to urge anyone who can help him to do so. I was originally diagnosed by doctors at Belize Medical Associates and by a Guatemalan doctor with endocarditis when I was 14yrs old. However, and fortunately for me, doctors in Colorado were able to diagnose a separate but similar condition and I underwent surgery a year later to repair a leaking valve and also close a hole (the size of a golf ball) in my heart. Even though it’s over ten years ago, I still remember how close I was to dying and how my faith in God and the doctors helped me to stay alive to allow me to be where I am today.
There are many more people with this condition and I am sure that there are more in Belize who suffer and even die from this disease. I’m very optimistic that our medical industry in Belize will continue to improve in providing the necessary services to help save the valuable lives of our Belizean citizens.
I’ll continue to pray for Mr. Young’s healing.
This kind of news is all ways heart breaking to me.
when belizeans get ill and need to get some serious medical help because they are close to death there seem to be no money, and no one to give it to them.
it is time that belizeans start thinking about their future, and stop thinking short term.
good luck..
Hi , Simple want to bring to your attention that the medical terminology for heart is cardio as oppose to lung which is pulmonary, Therefore a hole in the heart would be termed a cardiac cavity and a hole in the lung would be termed a pulmonary cavity. Cardiopulmonary makes reference to both organs ( heart and lungs).
Let’s PRAY FOR HIM……….
This man need some urgent money right now, save the prayer for when the operation is over, he will need it.
lets hope the red cross will help some, or some of those wealthy Belizeans with some extra money.
be well Shane.
Let’s pray for him NOW. Prayers can move mountains with a little Faith.
Maddyvandijk……….. PUTS HOPE OVER PRAYER………. Hmmmmmm…….
