Karate kid teaches would be robber ‘the kick’

Robberies are crimes committed so often that they rarely make the news. But when the perpetrator becomes the victim of the attack and at the hands of the target, it certainly warrants news coverage. And that is exactly what happened on Tuesday night when four year Karate student, twenty one year old Carmelita Kuylen startled her attacker with a swift kick where he least expected it. The fellow was not only physically incapacitated, but was too embarrassed to proceed with his plans and the robbery was foiled.  We spoke to the brave young lady who tested the agility of her attacker.

Carmelita Kuylen, Karate Student

“I was walking from the University of Belize after my class was finished. I was coming here to the karate school, but before I came I was encountered by an unidentified black male at the corner of UWI and Princess Margaret Drive. When he approached me, he demanded my stuff. He said give me all what you have. I told him no. When I said no, he snatched my bag and it fly on the ground. I came to get my bag afterwards and I give him a front kick and when I give him a front kick he went onto the ground and I get my bag back.”

“So there was not a prolonged struggle?”

Carmelita Kuylen

“No, there was not because when he saw that I was not afraid he went, he ran away.”

Marion Ali

“Was this guy much bigger than you?”

Carmelita Kuylen
“Yes, he was a big five feet nine. He was tall. He was big, tall and he saw that I was not afraid of him.”

Marion Ali

“That kick that you gave him…”

Carmelita Kuylen

“It was to the groin.”

So for those ladies who feel they are defenseless and vulnerable to robbers, Kuylen says there is no need to be.  In fact, you’d be surprised how much you can do, she says.

Carmelita Kuylen

“We are not the prey, we are not the victims and those that leave their selves to be the prey and victims are the ones that are being attacked but no. don’t leave yourself to be the victims or the prey because most of the men see ladies as prey.”

Marion Ali

“But if they have a gun then it wouldn’t be advisable to fight somebody with a gun.”

Carmelita Kuylen

“Well if they have a gun, then what you can do is avoid them. You either, for the ladies, when someone has a gun, be calm first.  If you don’t have any skills you can equip yourself, you can come to the House of Shotokan and have some training because we also do some self defense techniques for the ladies and that’s one of the self defense techniques that I did that night that saved my life.”

The House of Shotokan Karate is located on Princess Margaret Drive facing Coney Drive and offers classes for as low as seventy eight dollars a month.  Kuylen is now preparing to compete in an international match in the US later this year.

If the criminal has a gun it is advisable to draw your own gun and shoot him down where he stands.

do’nt be silly, most of the people don’t walk with a gun, but they can use their body parts as natural guns.

Carmelita we can applaud you for what you have done to your attacker, being smart can save your life as well.

if that man had a gun or knife the story would be different.

WE need to teach “poor kids” self-defence too, not just the “well to do”.

Job Good but wrong choice of words preys are only animal we are not hunted sweety ok. But good job but not anyone can practice kicking a person just like that because it might that be as successful as her story. There are men out there who are HARD CORE and for sure would have done worst things to her.

  6. Student says:

MADAZ. Someone does something heroic, and a good bunch find it uplifting to find some way to inject some negativity into it all.
You people make me sick. Sick, I tell you. Real crab bucket frikkin syndrome fuh real.

  7. ronzy says:

Hey, good job in defending herself, most robbers are punks. They prey on the weak and those they perceive as such. Thats why robbers use guns and knives they are cowards and low lives. Also 4-MAN, prey is not only used for animals e.g. Tyler Perry’s, “The family that preys” and my comment. We all knew what the yong woman was trying to say.
