Basil Willis gets 2 charges added to his mile long rap sheet

Basil Willis

Well-known criminal figure, Basil Willis, who already has thirty offenses to his name, had two more charges added to his extensive rap sheet today.  Willis, a resident of Black Orchid Street in Belize City, is behind bars after being accused of robbing Mexican national, Juan Villatoro. Willis, who was charged with Robbery and Wounding, pleaded not guilty to both charges. Magistrate Kathleen Lewis upheld an objection to bail and Willis was remanded to the Hattieville Prison until July thirtieth. Villatoro reported that on June tenth, he was at a shop located at the corner of Lake View and Mahogany Streets when he was approached by a man he later identified as Willis. According to Villatoro, the man demanded that he hand over his cell phone and cash, but he did not comply and turned around to see his assailant, who cut his face with a machete. Out of fear, Villatoro then handed over his wallet and phone.

Belize should study the idea of a “3 strikes law.” In the U.S. it has cut down serious crime a lot.

It’s a simple idea: for your second serious crime [not necessarily violent — breaking into an empty building, for example, is a “serious crime”], the sentence is DOUBLED. For a third conviction, the sentence is LIFE IN PRISON.

    Three strikes, and you’re out.

In the States, crime is dropping in large part because the repeat criminals are in prison at least until they are old and gray. Or they die there.

It WILL work in Belize, too.
