Murder trial ends; accused brothers await decision

The defense and prosecution in the murder trial of two brothers closed their case today before Supreme Court Justice Adolph Lucas.  The brothers, Jody and Lynton Gentle, are accused of the June sixteenth 2007 murder of Alpheus Smith who was gunned down in broad daylight on Curassow Street.  Smith was shot multiple times to the body, upper lower and back.  A Senior Superintendent of Police was in the area at the time the shots were fired and he apprehended the brothers, allegedly in possession of firearms that matched the bullets found in the deceased.  Crown Counsel, Yohhahnseh Cave is prosecuting the case while Senior Counsel, Hubert Elrington, is defending the men.  The allegations against the brothers are that they were caught red-handed by Senior Superintendent, Chester Williams, who pursued them minutes after the shooting.  Williams testified last week and said that on June sixteenth, 2007, he saw the two brothers firing shots into a red car that was park on Curassow Street.  The men ran into Gibnut Street and a nearby yard and when Williams set chase; he caught up with them on Antelope Street and they were detained.  Both brothers were found in possession of firearms.  Officer Obed Arzu who was with Williams, also identified the men in court as the shooters on that day.  In their defense, the men denied that they pulled the trigger since on the morning in question they were going fishing at the Cayes.  Justice Lucas will sum up the evidence of the case on Wednesday and a verdict is expected by the end of the day.

I know that we have good people on the Belize Police Force, there are more good cops than bad cops. Good always wins over bad. ALWAYS!!!!! We need to support them, UNLIKE Mr. Singh who insults them.

  4. Proud Belizean says:

You brought up some good points there Mr. Earl Grey. He seems to be taking a negative approach on the police and could result in the police not supporting his initiatives. The problem with these appointed Ministers is that just because they are successful businessmen, the government assumes that they are good managers. Big mistake!

It is time for a new breathe of politicians to rise. I hope it happens by the next general elections.

What do justice looks have to sum up?The only thing i can think is that he is deciding if these two should get off what’s new the evidence against them is more than enough to convict.
