Convicted murderer loses his Privy Council appeal

The horrendous murder of nineteen year old Myrna Figueroa on September thirteenth 2007 made national headlines when her three year old son was found wandering the highway in South Stann Creek in the middle of the night. At the time of his discovery the little boy could not be identified. The nude body of his mother which showed signs of sexual abuse was found four days later two miles into the Hopkins Road. A post mortem examination concluded that Figueroa was strangled to death. Four men, all residents of Silk Grass Village, were subsequently arrested and charged for the crime and while charges against three of them were later withdrawn forty-five year old Miguel Herrera stood trial for murder. It was revealed in court that Herrera, Figueroa’s ex-boyfriend, had also requested one of the three men to throw the toddler off the Kendall Bridge, but instead the child was abandoned on the Southern Highway. Herrera was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison. His attorney, Oswald Twist, appealed the judgment which was upheld by the Court of Appeal. In 2009 the case made its way to the Privy Council in London where a judgment has been handed down, upholding the conviction so that Herrera must serve the life sentence because there was no merit to his appeal. Herrera’s was among four cases that were scheduled to appear before the Privy Council after Belize shifted to the Caribbean Court of Justice as its final appellate court. On Wednesday the Privy Council reduced to manslaughter a conviction against Kirk Gordon.
The more I read, the sicker this story gets, if anyone deserves the death penalty, this POS(piece of …) did. So he did not feel his wife had the right to leave his evil … or risk losing some of her loved ones. To prove his point, he rapes & kills her sister & tells his cohorts to throw her baby off the bridge. What did the 3 year old do to him? (Imaginary beef). One of them had enough of a conscience to disobey him. He has the right to appeal but if he were a rabid or vicious dog, we would have taken him out of our misery. He should have been tied up & thrown off the same bridge he intended to make this child’s final stop.

This is exactly the type of individual that merits the maximum penalty in the land…… hanging! It is incredible how the system works that allows the other criminals to walk away despite having raped the girl.
I would not be surprised at all if pepole start to retaliate as a means to get closure…. if any. At least you would have the mere consolation that these animals are dead too.

when the first news broke out it made me cry about the 3 yr old that i was gonna adopt him. this evil herrera doesn’t deserve to live.. kill the bastard..
To have this man soon or almost walking free after what he has done to this little boy’s future with his mom is just a shame on our jusdistical system…am a mother of two and hell mein men like these must be punish in similiar but more harsh ways until their last breath is taken..poor little guy God sent an angel to protect him on that highway at that time of the night and that angel is still protecting him now and always….sure whoever he’s with is giving him the love and attention his mammi would have been giving to him GOD PLEASE CONTINUE TO BLESS AND GUIDE HIM THROUGH HIS LIFE TIME…
This heartless man deserves more than just life….and again justice system fails as the other men got away without any charge….they all deserve to die in pain and suffering
Monster. He killed a 19yr old girl, she was 26years younger than him. These old men who date these little teenage girl, have no respect for them self or others in their community. He probably have daughters who are older than the girl he killed. We have to start shunning these cradle snackers in our society. He didn’t even allow her a chance of having a life, therefore he should get life. Finally I can say Hallelujah, justice has been served.
