Brother shot and brother killed in front of Korea electronics

Under the cover of darkness, a minor was fatally shot and his brother injured at Cinderella Plaza. It happened after four in the morning when the usually busy plaza was scanty. Alexander Murray was in a car along with his brother, Alton, and two friends when they were sandwiched by two vehicles at the stoplight. Gunshots were fired from the rear vehicle, Alexander and his brother were caught by the bullets but the other two were more fortunate. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports on the city’s latest homicide.

Another weekend of gun violence has claimed the life of a young Belize City mechanic. Sixteen year old Alexander Murray succumbed to injuries at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after he was shot in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Brothers Alex and Alton Murray along with their friends Glenford Martinez and Michael Stevens were said to be out test driving a vehicle the siblings had just finished repairing when an incident that can only be described as a scene from a Hollywood action film unfolded.  It is unclear what precipitated this senseless act of violence but as the black four door vehicle they were traveling in made its way up Freetown Road, it was intercepted by a Ford F-150 pickup truck near the intersections of Freetown Road and Douglas Jones Street at the stoplight.  Another vehicle boxed their Pontiac in from its rear and a hail of bullets was sprayed in their direction.  When the smoke cleared Alex lay gravely injured with what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the back of his head and back. His brother Alton was also hit in the right elbow.  According to Police Press Officer Fitzroy Yearwood police responded shortly after.

“Police visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on Saturday, twenty-fourth of July around four-fifteen a.m., where they saw brothers Alexander Murray and Alton Murray suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.  Alexander Murray succumbed to his injuries around one-forty-two p.m. and his brother Alton has been treated and released from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.”

What are your investigations telling you at this point as to how this incident happened or what may have been the cause of it?

“Well initial investigations revealed that the brothers were traveling in a black Pontiac car with two other friends when a F-150 pickup truck blocked their way on Freetown Road somewhere in the vicinity of the Cinderella Plaza and a blue green color Astro Van came up behind them where a gunman fired several shots at them apparently causing the injuries.  We initially had detained brothers Philip and Charles McKoy and Adrian Paredez.  So far I know that Philip has been released but we believe that the other two can assist us in the investigation.”

At this point you guys don’t have a motive as yet as to what may have caused this incident to happen?

“Well not as yet.  We are still trying to establish the motive.”

The family of Alex and Alton Murray remained tightlipped about the incident.  The young man’s mother attested however that her son was not gang affiliated.  Alex had just completed training at the Tubal Institute and was planning on attending ITVET to further his education in automotive mechanics.  Incidentally both brothers and their attackers are mechanics by trade. San Ignacio Police today arraigned Cayo resident Alfonso Awe for the crime of murder.  At about one-thirty on the morning of Friday July twenty-third, thirty-nine year old Efrain Cruz was gunned down while he stood outside Legends 2000 Nightclub.  It is believed that the crime may have been motivated by jealousy as Cruz, it is reported, had an ongoing friendship with the common-law wife of Alfonso Awe.  The two men got into an altercation at the popular nightspot where it said that Awe waited for Cruz to exit the establishment.  As many as nine shots were fired at Cruz who died on the spot.  Awe has since been arrested and today was charged for murder.
