Deputy Mayor Philoughby says cemetery site is acceptable

But Deputy Mayor, Philip Willoughby says that the council and ministries collaborating on the project did their homework before deciding on the site. Willoughby also feels there is no need for conflict over the issue and they are willing to discuss the concerns of the village council.

Philip Willoughby, Deputy Mayor, Belize City

“I don’t see it to be any problem of concern. I’m very hopeful though that we will resolve the matter. With regards to the other issues that you brought up, like I said whether it’s within the purview of the Hattieville Village Council or even the Eight Miles Village Council, the committee of all the CEOs who were in the meeting, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Health, Local Government, Works, they—we all did our best in terms to putting in the proper infrastructures and how we would regulate the mile twelve and three-quarter cemetery and that would include all the amenities and infrastructure. How it would affect, the surrounding areas, I think it wouldn’t and these were and are information gathered by the Ministry of Health.”

“To the Village Council of Hattieville, if any offence were made, we apologize if we have offended anyone out there. But again taking the high road to come to the table and sit and talk and discuss this matter, and the severity of this matter warrants that we sit and discuss it.”

Delahnie Bain

“He also mentioned to me that perhaps you could have talked about making some arrangement with the cemetery that’s already there because it might be unnecessary to have two cemeteries in their small community.”

Philip Willoughby

“As I understood it and what I have said, we are looking forward to having a first class, world class type cemetery. That’s what we’re looking forward to and from the twenty plus acres that’s behind there and like I said the amenities and so on that would go into it, would provide us with just that.”

Willoughby also pointed out that the layout of Homeland Memorial at mile eight on the Western Highway limits access to the some grave sites.

First Class, World Class cemetery with the first appropriation of only $60,000.00? (cost of an SUV) .

They think Belizeans are stupid !

  2. Progressive Woman says:

Relocate the squatters adjacent to the cemetery (the ones Dr. Gayle referred to an earlier story living on filth in unsanitary conditions) and expand the cemetery in that area! The only people that belong in that swamp are dead people.

Why does this seem like such a simple solution to me?

  3. cayobway says:

It is high time to consider cremation, it is a whole lot cheaper and it would not require infringing on property belongong to other villages. belize has come far, we have funeral parlours, just add an incenerator and it will be a lot less stressful and less expensive

  4. Progressive Woman says:

RELOCATE THE SQUATTERS!!! EXPAND CEMETERY TO LONDON BRIDGES SWAMPVILLE!

Doesn’t the building of a cemetery need the department of environment involvement in it too to do one of those studies? The EIA study. Willoughby is talking like he is the Prime Minister of Belize. He is only the acting Mayor of Belize city which boundaries is up to mile six bridge. He doesn’t have no say about anything after that. So who is he to come and talk a whole heep of Crap about doing Homework. I bet if you ask him about the minutes or anything in writing about the meeting with the CEO of the different Ministry they won’t be any. Come on.

  6. belizeanpride says:

i think that he’s trying to have the dead as far as he could from his home but wants to put the cemetery to the resindencial area of the villagers, i think this is very disrespectful to this village. come on willo willoughby have some respect to this village.

  7. Progressive Woman says:

I would really like to know why the cemetery can’t be expanded the area in which it is already located. Is it because someone owns the swamp land that is currently occupied by the squatters? I’m so confused about this. Logic would say expand outward to those areas. Relocate the squatters to Hattieville for a better life.
