Stabbed, castrated, then set on fire in a quiet village
We have covered stories about gruesome murders, but tonight the slaying of a forty-one year old man in the north is one of the most horrific to report. Philip Hall was stabbed multiple times, his private parts were severed and then he was set on fire in a small house a few miles outside Corozal Town. It is believed it is a crime of passion and the suspect is well known in the otherwise quiet village. News Five’s Isani Cayetano headed north and has a report on this grisly murder.
Isani Cayetano, Reporting
Residents of Carolina Village, a small tight knit community less than five miles outside of Corozal Town, are trying to understand what took place inside this small two storey ranch house last night. Shortly before nine o’clock on Monday neighbors were alerted of a fire at the far end of a pasture some five hundred feet off the Northern Highway. When police and fire officials responded they were taken aback by what they discovered. Inside the one-bedroom cement structure was the motionless, extensively singed body of a man whose private parts appeared to be severed from the rest of his body.
“An evening of socializing quickly led to bloodshed as it is believed that forty-one year old Philip Hall may have made a sexual advance unto Rafael Mencias, a caretaker at this ranch in Carolina Village.”
Corozal police are still trying to ascertain a motive for the brutal murder but villagers are saying that both men knew each other very well and whilst Rafael Mencias was a custodian at this small farmhouse he was often seen in the company of Hall. Another caretaker who supervises the workmen on the property says that what happened last night may have indeed began over the weekend while they were hanging out at their boss’ house.

“Sunday night all ah we was out having fun you know, ova by the palapa and the older guy tell the young guy ih like see him but I neva expect ih mih a reach to dis level or dis stage yah you know. And the young bwai tell ah he da noh dehn kind deh. But di olda guy seh dat he like sih ah and ih noh wah done til ih get ah well yo sih how ih end up ras, dah soh ih end up yoh noh. I know di man as some young bwai, young bwai used to heng wid me right. I know di next man as you know, an individual as yoh woulda say gay or whatsoever but I neva know my next lee bwai to da extreme mein. All weh I could say is dat maybe di older man reach deh and try force di man or whatsoever gone wrong wid di man but I neva expect the man deh mih ah reach to dehn level deh you know. I neva expect it fi reach so far.”
But it did and when the relevant authorities responded to the scene they discovered Hall with what appeared to be multiple stab wounds, as many as fifteen times, to various parts of the body. The caretaker went on to say that he was approached by Mencias to assist in putting the body in a garbage bag.

“When di man approach me di man say em he mi wah I renda wah lee aid you know, more dan likely fi dispose ah di body check. Before I react I just walk weh and I gaan inside ah my boss man house and den I tell my boss man well easier you just call di police cause bally done kill bally ova deh check and I cyan go get eena dat. Dat dah no my show.”
Shortly before ten o’clock Corozal Police arrived on the scene and according to Superintendent Miguel Guzman the lower flat of the building was engulfed in flames.
Supt. Miguel Guzman, OC, Corozal Police
“Simultaneously the fire department had also responded because there was some information in regards to the fire and they immediately got to work and extinguished the fire. Initial inspection of the building inside the building they observed a nude body of a Creole descent male person who was later identified as Philip Moses Hall, who appeared to be motionless. Further inspection on his body revealed that he had multiple stab wounds to the neck, the chest region and lower abdominal region.”
Hall had been slaughtered and lit on fire along with the furniture and other items inside the building. His brother says Philip was unable to defend himself because he was under the influence of alcohol.
Hubert Hall, Brother of Murder Victim
“If the guy was sober I think that guy couldn’t kill him. He knew that the guy was like that so if you don’t want to mess round with a guy like that, he didn’t have to take him home and kill him because den dah dat’s why di war can’t finish man.”
Isani Cayetano
“You mentioned earlier as well that it would seem as though the police department now wants the family to go and get the guy. Speak to us about that in some detail.”
Hubert Hall
“That is what they think that I am frightened because when dehn guys meet you pan di road you di come out from di same road weh dehn kill fi we bredda. Dehn wah di rub we down and di tell we you di sell drugs and you involved and now when dehn should act they don’t act. They want us to act. Dat dah weh dehn di try tell we, dat dehn want we war. We dah noh dehn kinda people dread, we dah good people.”
According to Guzman, the department enlisted the help of area residents because Bull, as Mencias, is commonly known is friends with a number of them and to avoid allegations of unnecessary force in apprehending him they requested that villagers bring him in. Until news time this evening, the young man is believed to be in the areas of Calcutta and Carolina villages. An all points bulletin has been issued for his arrest. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
This is the second murder in three days. Early Saturday morning the other was in Belize City where Alexander Murray was shot and killed.
Does anyone have the ability to talk through what deem is an insult or walk away from an assault on their male ego?.
Whatever happened to thanks but no thanks.
Homophobia is not a reason to kill & if the murderer got curious & felt remorse afterward, that is still not justification.
Big time …. man and small time mafia bit the dust. Cian chancy no mo li buay and rape dem now.
I can’t even bring myself to read this article. The headline tells it all. Cruel doesn’t even begin to describe these actions. More like despicable and total cruelty and evil.
I do not condone what this young man did if he was the one responsible for this heinous crime. However if you’re gay then you need to keep your stupid comments to yourself because that everyone is into that bull.
Belize is already out of hand, please god help Belize, please assist us in changing the justice, police and Government. I was a strong UDP but it seems that no party is good enough in belize.
! hope they catch him.
our beautiful jewel needs help from the gov. to implement more hard punishment for all crimes to avoid this madness to continue happening at a rate that will enlist us a the most violent caribbean country. we need help urgently starting with home values to begin with.
This is insane. I believe that castrating is good, but only for criminals that rape. If Mr. Hall was trying to forced himself onto the little boy – then I don’t blame him for going off. “IF I SEH NO, I MEAN NOO!” People need to start realize that homophobia is a terrible disease and some people will just not take any of the BS that the homosexuals display towards them.
he desirve what he got….. are out of hand in Belize. This need to change. And society need to get a breast of all the stupid and horric things being done especially to minors.
…MaGGots….me personally have wa zeR0 tolerance fi ….-bwi and ……., we noh inna dem ting deh. I tink he got wat he deserved, burn out the corruption. I hope this sent a message to the pagan ….. world…Adam and Eve Jah seh…NOT ADAM AND STEVE!!!
i am a bzean and its sad to say bze sucks, the government sucks udp pup whatever it is they all sucks all the do is promise and promise look whats happening and they dont even qualify to do a propper investigation sometimes they just lucky to know the person thats guilty, anyhow just hope they try make something good for the country mien cause really they left bze in shame!!!
what would you all have commented if PHILIP HALL would have hold on to that youong man , rape him, infect him with the HIV virus? What would you comment??
The Government have no fault if these like!!!! They chose to be gay, but if the young man refused his pass he HALL should have respected the young man.
I believe he got what he desrve!!!!
Agree RasCo…..’dis da village justice, although a lee extreme, castration would of been enough.
Sallams.
LIVE AND…. LET LIVE!!!
We need a place where gay people can go and feel free. We need to leave them alone if we don’t want to be with them. NO NEED TO KILL THEM. Some of these people cannot help themselves. SHOW COMPASSION FOR ALL GOD’S CHILDREN!!!!!
i think this was more like self defense but went to an extreme , he should only castrated him not him but it’s over hope other gaylords who want totpraunce on young guys will think twice before they do that, i personally would rather go to jail instead of making news that i was raped by a …. so i feel these guys should plead for a loewr crime offence.
This is the third gruesome murder of a homosexual in the north in the recent past. In Corozal Town, the murder of the former teacher and UDP honcho, was never solved. Very similar to this one.
No one should take some ones life, but the Justice of God is something else. I am not saying that what this young man did was right, all i am saying is that the time of vengance of the Lord is here and no one can run from it what you reap you will sow.
Yup, agree belizeanpride…..self-defence or provocation. Although, isn’t sodomy/buggery/un-natural crimes still illegal in Belize? The criminal is not the young kid defending his body (although, again, he went to the extreme, castration and a good beating would of been enough), the criminal in this case is the deceased homosexual.
There was a place, Earl Grey, for the Sodomites – but brimstone ended that location.
sigh…no matter what he is i believe that he didn’t deserve to be killed the way he was….no one other than God is the one who decides when to take away someon’s life…may his soul R.I.P….
This guy is no different than a sex predator he got what he ask for.
A little extreme for defending yourself Bull.
Some of you are quick to point to homophobia. Homophobia has nothing to do with this. Homophobia simply means that you fear gay people without justification.
In this specific case the older gentleman was pushing his desires towards the young man and the young man said NO. It should have ended right there, but the older gentleman went on to say ” I will have you no matter what”
IMAGINE A STRAIGHT MALE TELLS YOUR YOUNG DAUGHTER THAT? What do you have to say to that?
I have a feeling that the older gentleman got drunk and went into this youngman’s house to carry out his promise of “getting him no matter what” . As the americans like to say ” YOU KEEP KNOCKING ON THE DEVIL’S DOOR, SOMEONE IS BOUND TO ANSWER”.
Gay people need to understand that handsome straight young men will not put up with their advances, I respect you but please don’t hit on my and worst yet don’t dare tell me that you will have me no matter what because you are looking for some serious trouble.
A thief breaking into my house I might hold at gun point or shoot on the leg, but a gay sexual predator I will empty a magazine on his chest if need be in order to stop his attempted rape of my person.
My people, I understand your varied points of view but we must remember we have not heard both sides of this story. My question is, if the man, and no, I do not condone homosexuality or worse the type that preys on young boys, but why didn’t the young man walk away, how did he end up at the individual’s home. I can understand the individuals embarassment from being approached like that in public. If he followed that man home that is premeditated and he has a higher power to answer to. Perhaps it is just as the headlines said “crime of passion”, perhaps they were lovers…think people, think.
There is no justification to take a human’s life. This world is the way it is due to people who condone this behavior. Holding your pride does not mean you need to murder someone to do so. I know that family and that young man knew exactly who he was dealing with and he chose to have this person in the privacy of his home, not saying the other was right. He could have objected to the act in another way. He took a life and will now sadly lose his freedom for acting in a violent way. If this is what you call Belizean pride, it is very sad because all those who hold that type of pride will end up taking someones life and I hope it is not one of yours or my family member. Our little country is too small to have out of control violence. Our criminal penalties need to be reviewed and adjustments need to be made. Consequences of committing a crime is not harsh enough, and that is why so much is being committed with no second thoughts, because all they get is a pat on the shoulder, “don’t do it again” and they are free once again. Imagine, our law says that if a stabbing wound is not 6 inches deep, the charges cannot be attempted murder. This is outrageous, at 6 inches, that person is dead or have serious internal damage. Hanging and serious jail time with no chances of parole needs to be implemented to have people think twice before acting out their rages, otherwise we will soon become another Guatemala or El Salvador. Thank God our country is not at war with any other country, but sadly our people are at war within themselves. Put our military on the streets, implement a curfew. Do whatever it takes to keep our little beautiful country under control. Stop the pull string to get murderers back on the streets.

Unless somebody play the dog (PM Barrow is playing the dog). the guy did what he had to do. Judgment of his action is left to God!
……………………… Any of you can be next. how would you react? thats a good question. we are loosing the world we love and it looks like the sinning wont end. lets change the wolrd. Famous rapper bizzy bone said ” just trust and Belive “
Is murder increasing in Belize? An advance on someone is not a capital crime, and it’s also not a crime to be gay. If you want tourists you better stop these murders. Nobody wants to visit a country where murders like this happen. This murder was nothing less than uncivilized and barbaric. Maybe gay relations are illegal in Belize but certainly MURDER is.
I agree with MinShell, I felt very embarrassed a few weeks ago when I was talking with an American citizen on my flight to Houston, on my way to Belize. When I told him I was from Belize, he jokingly said, “Oh, I heard that is the country you can get away with murder”. I am sure I am not the first to hear that. Sadly all this crime looks terrible on our news. It surely scares tourists away. Not good for Belize. Our country population is too small to be so out of control with crime.
Being gay does not make a person less human. I know lots of gay people and I give myself to be respected as straight, never had a problem with any advances. We live in a society that gay people do too, so you either know how to deal with them or just simply keep away.
People need to hear the two sides of the story before commenting, murder is wrong no matter what and the person who was interviewed and said the gay guy told the young man that he would get him no matter what was the young boy’s friend so of course he will make it look like it was the gay guys fault, he wanted to defend his friend, moreover, if the gay guy said that it happened the day before the murder so if you know this guy has said he likes you why would you invite him to your house? I am speaking based on facts and not hearsay. I think there is a lot more to this story than what we heard on the news.
I am from belize, have always love my little country defended it. i now live in the us, have been here for quite awhile, and it saddens me that it has become what it is today.what i remember is me and my sisters walking around free and happy taking the bus into mexico to shop, without fear. that kid is my cousin, i went to school with him, we were christians he wasnt gay, he was friendly easy going young man. he went to la californiathat was the last time i seen him.maybe he changed, maybe he was gay, but i can tell you, he didnt deserve to die that way.No-one does, only god can decide,or should decide someones fate.if someone i gay but live his life dedicated to helping people,i honestly dont think god wii overlook everything and send them to hell jus for being gay.and if that kid knew he was gay and didnt approved he should have stayed away not kill him.and people please turn belize back into the paradise i remember, thank you
sorry i am not gay but everyone deserve to live in peace who are we to say. i say live and let live,we always have a choice, walkaway make
.peac.e your choice.I love my people, I love my country.God bless us all
It’s clear that both Parties put spark to this flame,”I am commenting based on the article above and not based on race, religion or sexuality in this manner” Love, Live, Love & Live, Live with Love, Love to Live, So much love in my heart to give! PEACE, God Bless!!!!!
It is a shame and a disgrace that things have to end up like this. Maybe you should start putting the death sentence to ppl that kill. How many homosexuals have to live in fear. It is not our fault that these little tricks come to us and well try to treat you all sweet just so you let go some money to them for their substance abuse. So calcuttajoe them lee buay like you call them well they doing lots worse than you and i can do in a lifetime and i can only blame the justice system of belize for lacking in punishing such haneous crimes lets face it the entire court system is scruwed up. Lets not even beggin to talk about the police they are so slow and most of the time dont even respond to your calls especially if they know you are gay. I am a 21 year odl prod gay young man and trust me there is no ways that one of these tricks can come and try getting to me i got too much pride to even look at one of them. even though i try to get as far away from trouble it still looks for you i had to have my house windows broken, my house broken into, treats and so many other things and the stupid police couldnt do n e thing i am an honest and hard working guy and since i cant get any justice in belize i decided to move away from Belize and have lost many gay investors who would open restaurants hotels etc. but because of the lack of justice in belize have klost interest. i might return to belize but not now maybe when the police gets there priorities str8 and when the justice system actually works. for now all i can say maybe if you legalized sodomy and looked into gay rights idiots like Bull wouldnt think twice in doing this or might not even get the chance since then gay guys would not have to hide and live a life of fear and shame
Lets not talk about justice because belize has none. I am afraid to tour my own country because of all the violence that’s going on. I agree with “Respect for Human Life” our belizean people are at war with ourselves which is worse than being at war with other countries. A few days ago i was chatting with my friend from canada who always come and assist me in my classroom. She told me she is thinking twice to come back to Belize. PEOPLE WAKE UP WE ARE CHASING OUR TOURISTS WHICH ARE THE BACKBONE OF OUR COUNTRY!!!! I think that people who detest gay guys are because they are unsure of their sexuality and are afraid to fall for it. Because people who are straight and sure of their sexuality will ignore any comments because they know who and what they are. To tell you the truth gay people are better persons than any straight person they know what life is all about and they understand you better than anyone else. PLEASE PEOPLE LET’S HELP BUILD BACK THE BELIZE THAT WE HAD BEFORE!!!
THE GOVERNMENT DOESNT SEEM TO CARE MUCH ABOUT THIS HORRIFIC INCIDENTS!!! THIS PEOPLE SHOULD BE SET IN PSRISON FOR LIFEEEEEEE!!!!
