Edwin Carrington receives the Order of Distinction

edwin carrington

In news from the region, he is a well known face in the Caribbean, the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).  Edwin Carrington is also a recipient of the Order of Distinction given by Belize. Carrington has indicated to the heads of government that he is leaving the job at the end of this year. He was appointed secretary general back in 1992 and has been at the helm of a number of singular accomplishments including the revision of the Treaty of Chaguaramas and the consequent transition of the Community from a Common Market to a Single Market in 2006. As Secretary-General, Carrington is credited with the process of the evolution of the Single Economy, which is expected to come on stream in 2015. But there have also been setbacks and as he demits office, debate is raging on the relevance of CARICOM. In a statement Carrington said he was leaving to spend more time with his family and was privileged to have served the region.
