Big Brother will soon tap into conversations
Wire taps, telephone intercepts, and email snooping, are all going to be a legislative reality. At today’s House Meeting, Prime Minister Dean Barrow said that this type of legislation will allow for better tracking of criminal activity. Since cell phones are an everyday tool for the criminals, tapping of phone lines will be one of the main ways in which investigations will be supplemented. Though it is a highly controversial move that questions the right to privacy, Barrow also said that it is long overdue and similar legislations have been implemented in the region.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“In order to get a direction from the Supreme Court, the authorized officer, who is basically the commissioner of police or somebody designated by him must first make his case to the Director of Public Prosecutions then applies to a judge in chambers for the interception direction. There is a wealth or a host of details by way of justification that must be provided to the Supreme Court before the judge can make this kind of an order. The order is time bound; in other words, there is a limit to the duration of the order that is imposed on the Director of Public Prosecutions in the making of the application. But the Judge, if the Director of Public Prosecutions asks for the maximum that the law, allows can still say no I’m going to give you for a week or ten days as the case may be. For however long the order is in effect, the judge is required to receive from the Director of Public Prosecutions, periodic reports on how the whole business is proceeding and the judge can at anytime, if there is any failure to submit the reports or if the judge s not satisfied that in fact the direction is achieving the desired purposes, or if the judge is of the view that circumstances have changed so that eh direction has become oppressive, the judge can in fact withdraw the approval for the interception to continue to take place.”
In his speech the Prime Minister said “The current, deluge, seems to be overtaking us. Government must discharge its responsibility to society.” He indicated that the bill has the full support of Cabinet.
I said it the first time Barrow wanted to pass the draconian law; that he will let the violence in this country deteriorate so that he can find his ‘red flag’ to pass this law. People in this country are just as dumb and brainwashed as in the USA.
after hundreds of deaths this pm finally comes out and admits that crime is out of control now he is trying to show like he is doing something about crime guess he finally opened his eyes to the reality that even he may be the next victim of crime since he has no control of the crime situation in belize and all he does is ignore the situation education in the drain, economy in the drain ,tourism in the drain, corruption rampant, need i say more.
Ha! Ha! Police department through BTL has been tapping phones since the early 1980`s. Criminals will stay one step ahead of the police in changing their digicel sim card often. They are already moving within five miles of our bouders where they can pick up our neighboring counteries phone signals useing these counteries sim card, thereby useing these cuunteries network from within Belize. As ususl this law will only put the petty criminals who cannot afford to change a sim pack every week in jail.
This law will become like the firearms law which made the search warrant fell by the way side. The search warrant is no longer use as the police now use the firearms law to enter ones property regardless of what they are searching for.
Maybe the sophisticated criminals & the ones with connections will beat the system. I don’t believe that most of the murders in Belize are being committed by geniuses & if the police can keep up with the recordings, some of the problems we are now experiencing with reluctant witnesses can be negated.
Our neighbors are having the same problems & worse, let’s not assume that these officials are not working together & sharing info. Revisit the law in a year or two to make sure it is or is not working.
Let’s face it, we all bring different skills to the table & if you are a criminal who keeps getting caught, it may be a good idea to find another line of work.
Finally, the truth, you’re so ingenous when u make such comment about my fellow Belizeans. The only dumb one I notice here is u. Im sensing that you’re related to the criminal ring in Belize or are a criminal yourself. Any honest, hard-working, law-abiding citizen of Belize that wants to see a change will agree to this initiative.
I support this initiative fully as it will leave criminals “uncommunicated” or at least make it more difficult to organize their mad-a-……
Big Brother…Microchip….Mark a the Beast…..
Oh God, Wire Tapping??? — privacy issues — people, seriously, which country doesn’t do wire tapping??? It’s high time we start doing this.
Dean Barrow, once again your try in to complicate an already complicated system for the D.P.P.This new law sound’s like an american idea,we belize, can not even inforce our current laws in the way they were intented to be inforced, our existing laws should be revised, instead of implementing new ones,The barrow administration is alway’s trying to find an quick fix to our problems, simple trying to use a band aid,to stop the leaking hose, well not work.We the belizean people, need a complete overhaul of our laws and justice system. There is so many ways to beat the wiretap system, and how will they put a face to the voice on the other end?The only one’s will be benefitting from our new wiretap law will be the united states of america,to legally listen in on our belizean conversations, and to make it easier to extradite belizean’s to america, for so called wire criminal conspiracy.I believe this is a total wast of our time and resource’s.
HA, he wants to start wire tapping when first things shold be dealt with is the police unprofessionalism starting from the top to bottom, along the DPP who cant’file case to maturely and then try tapping. he’ll tapp when police can’t even gather evidence that is to obvious to record, imagine when the tapiing evidence come they might not even be able to deal with it. it’s good tapping but not with out looking at the mass errors done in the polce dep. or the DPP case going with no verdict.
This will be like crimminals spying on crimminals….
I think that the aquisition of a state of the art forensic lab with highly trained technicians to operate it would be much more practical in addressing the crime situation in the country.
Phone tapping is nothing new in Belize. My phone was tapped back in the mid to late 90’s when the Police thought that my life style was supported by illicit drug activities.
Of course it was NOT!!!
How i knew was a friend of mine told me to listen for the tell tale sound of a tape recorder, still recording, that you would hear if you listen carefully after you’ve finished your conversation. You could even hear it clicking off when there is no more sound to be recorded.
You want to take a bite out of crime Mr. Crime Minister??……. Improve Police/ public relations. Strenghten the Judiciary and train officers in forensic science.
As duncey as the criminals are making your PROFESSIONALS to appear, wire tapping is definately not the answer!!!! So take my foolish advice and please don’t waste your time and tax payer’s money.
