Do you think wire taps will be used to eavesdrop on you?

This past Friday, the government introduced a Bill in the House entitled Interception of Communications Act which will allow security personnel to eavesdrop on telephone calls. The new piece of legislation  will surely be hotly debated before it can become law because not everyone agrees that it will only be used to monitor criminal activity as the government says is the intention. There are many who feel that through the electronic wiretapping, private conversations of persons who are not involved in crime will be accessed. Tonight we ask: Do you think that intercepting of calls will be limited to criminals? To take part in the conversation all you have to do is to email comments to questions@channel5belize.com, send a text using your SMART phones to 8686, or log on to our e-poll at www.channel5belize.com.

Criminals have friends & family who are not in that life & some of those calls will be listened to. As parents and siblings we need to acknowledge what some of our kin are doing & stop allowing them to hide behind us.

Mr barrow can you please check the constitution of belize. Another thing is that in belize the people in power will intercept calls from the opposition party. Its a good idea but it needs to be done independently. A message to the crimminals on patrol you got to intercept calls from the most o.g s. The ministers they are the leaders of the crimminals hidden behind a desk. Also intercept your own calls.because there is no difference between a crimminals ang the bze police dept. The only difference is dat den cops r more crimminals than anyone in belize

Theft , stealing is against the law in bze.but if you murder someone definately you r a free man. Oops ther is an exepetion you can get a permit or license to theif or steal in belize. One you need to be a minista of something, next join the bze police force. Both have permit and license to do anything.steal abuse etc.

i dont think that it will be used to monitor criminal activity but rather used to gain other information on people in society but like always government is blindfolding the people of our beautiful jewel insisting that it will only be used for criminal activity, just to get the bill sign, remember that the prime minister likes to break his word and promises just like he agreed breaking one of his manifesto Ordeal.

  5. Proud says:

I support this initiative and I strongly believe that it could help solve and most importantly prevent crimes or at least make it difficult for criminals to organize themselves to carry out crime. However, I am really concerned that criminals may end up having some kind of access and may be able to gain access to conversations of genuine business people and become more informed about victim’s whereabouts.

this would be a great idea if our country was not so corrupt!

  9. Darius Martinez says:

I dont think so, government is using this as a ploy to eaves drop on their political and other opponents and by so doing getting the upper hand whenever elections are called.

  10. Kelly Cornion says:

It is only natural for governments to do all they can to spy on their citizens. All governments throughout history have done it and don’t expect that to change.

However, we do live in the time of powerful personal computers. We can easily encrypt our email with TrulyMail, PGP, GPG, etc. so that nobody can read them. We have the tools (and many of them are free) so use them and keep your thoughts out of the public eye.

  11. Earl Grey says:

chrise………….TELL ME WHICH COUNTRY IS NOT CORRUPT!!!!

  12. Elgin Martinez says:

Wire taps with a 7% conviction rate is just a waste of Tax Dollars why not use that money to educate some of the Police officers in Forensics.

  13. Proud says:

    Very good Sasha

Just another joke, If they had mind their own business and do their jobs as they should have done in the first place, they would have caught themselves f—in up a long time ago. Now that their mess is all in the open, thanks to them pointing fingers at each other, they expect us the GOOD CITIZENS od Belize to suffer for the BAD as usual. Manford, maybe you’re right because we don’t know what to believe anymore and we should expect no different from these people (So called leaders). Dehn wa do weh dehn want anyway!!!.
