Man caught with News 5’s Isani Cayetano’s laptop fined $1000

Kevin Faber

We reported on Tuesday that News Five’s Isani Cayetano was robbed as walked home from our studios on Coney Drive this past Monday night. Cops were quick to connect the dots and Cayetano’s laptop computer was recovered by the following day. This morning, twenty-one year old Kevin Faber was charged with Handling Stolen Goods because Cayetano’s belongings were found at his home. When Faber appeared before Magistrate Dorothy Flowers, he was unrepresented but wasted no time and pleaded guilty to the offense. In mitigation, Faber asked the court to be lenient and since he had no previous convictions, Magistrate Flowers imposed a non custodial sentence of one thousand dollars to be paid by September thirtieth or in default he will spend eight months in prison. Cayetano reported to police that he was walking on Princess Margaret Drive when he was approached by three males; one who pointed a gun at him and took his Johnny Walker brand laptop bag containing his computer and accessories along with personal documents. The laptop bag and personal documents have not yet been recovered.

to Rod…i agree with you..but the problem is that our “Laws of Belize” were written so many years ago that they do not apply to today’s fast moving lifestyle. These laws are based on England Laws and they are so out of date and chaning them takes…not days..weeks or months but years and no party in power yet has had the “balls” to tackle and change them. It is our government that need to make the changes..not political speeches…which seem to be all we hear…
Too bad..but i agree that our laws need to be far more serious and updated to reflect the lifesytle we live now a days…

Don’t be too quick to make unfounded assumptions. I have seen adults that were burn by the same equipment and in more than one part of their body. They explaied in detail what and how it happened and I am still unable to visualize it. so you there we go. Maybe we are making judgement because of her habit and character. Those who know her from Cayo.

  11. Mellis says:

Magistrates make decissions based on facts and not emotions or innuendos. Some of you need to take time out and sit in Court and try to understand our system. The Police or Prosecution need to prove beyond a resonable doubt while the defense need only to create doubt. So you see lesson one for you people who are too quick to make judgement based on emotions.

the sentencing guidelines in belize is in need of urgent change, and the media needs to hold those who are responsible for making and implementing these changes , feet to the fire, i.e starting with the PRIME MINISTER (it is his job to secure the country). for years now people have been complaining about the direction the country is heading and noone seems to be listening. the avaerage joe on the street does not have the megaphone that the media has, so it is incumbent on them to ask the tough questions and not be laxed. these type of sentencing only signal the green light for these wanna be thugs to go out and commit their crimes becuse they know that they are not going to be held responsible for their actions. if we do not nip this at its bud, then the future of bze is going to be doomed because it is inevitable that our home land is going to become the hunt and the hunted (we are creating monsters) . note that when you look into the eyes of those being accused, all you can see is coldness and emptiness, as if thought they have lost their souls. most of these guys appears to have nothing to look forward to in life and as a result have nothing to live for; once you get to this point, you become a danger to society because you don’t care who you destroy. the only remedy for these people are for them to be destroyed, that is the only way our country is going to regain some sort of civility. one more thing is that the police department needs to know that its’ primary job is to PROTECT AND SERVE

  13. belizeanpride says:

i hope that isani doesn’t suffer revenge because of speaking out his ordeal, since in the city these thugs seems to harass anybody who brings out the truth on tv. so take, care bro always look behind your back when you go about the city, we need you man, you always bring in the news on our living room very professional. so God willing nothing happens to you again. your a hard working person which it pisses off people when thugs interfere with our daily striving lives.

  14. Elgin Martinez says:

Mellis: Majestrates in Belize makes decissions on who they know.So get your facts right.

  15. Manford says:

Well stated Mellis. Whomever coin the phrase that ignorance is bliss in my opinion must have been an uneducated person, since rational individuals knows that real power is “knowledge”. Let me add to your already profound statement: Of course the job of a good defense advocate is to punch holes in the charge(s) of the prosecutor since under our system of justice the accused is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

  16. Manford says:

Elgin, Thanks for your response. Note, the judges are dealing with the crimes after it had already been committed. within the limit of what the judge can sentence someone legally, the judge has certain discretion. Yes, every reasonable law abiding citizens is fed up with this lawlessness in the land, but bear in mind, that punishment is only what it was meant to be if the person been punish is at that level of conciousness to feel that he /she is been punish. What we are dealing with in Belize now, are individuals who feels that they have nothing really going for them and it does not matter where they past their time. This is why its so dangerous and scary. Society feel that the vast majority of individuals value their freedom of movement and to be confined in prison become a deterent for those who would other wise take matters into their own hand. However when a person loses the fear of been confined, then you have a different animal.

The only thing for a sentencing judge to do is to take that person out of circulating from amongst us for as long as is legally allowed. Now we don’t have to deal with that particular person for that period of time, but should that person not come to his/her senses before been released back into society, then sonner or later we will have to deal with a more dangerous individual. Why? If you understand human nature you will realize that to survive we adapt to our environment and subconteously it then become our second nature, and without strong will we are prone to go back to what we have become comfortable with, good or bad. This is why there is the revolving door offenders. They want to be free, but at the same time that other side of their personality is more overwhelming. They were of a weak charactar before their first brush with the law, and spending time in prison could further erode the character .This is why it is so important to set the right stage on which a child is developed, even though there is no 100% guarantee that a person will not fall into negative behavour even with the best of early traning, but good early traning has no substitute.
