Court orders psychiatric evaluation for Dekel Bennett

Dekel Bennett

For the past two months, twenty-one year old Dekel Bennett had been missing his court appearances for an Attempted Murder Charge. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest and Bennett was finally brought before the court today. But when Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer told him that she would adjourn the matter for a later date, Bennett used foul language and said he would plead guilty to the lesser charge. His disorderly behavior continued and the Senior Magistrate felt that he was mentally unstable. She ordered that a psychiatric evaluation be done immediately and Bennett was remanded to prison. The result of the examination is due on October first, when Bennett is to return to court. On June fourteenth, 2009, Bennett was playing basketball with Duane Staine in the Yarborough area. The two got into a misunderstanding and Bennett allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Staine. Bennett was charged with Attempted Murder, Dangerous Harm and Use of Deadly Means of Harm.

Play crazy, avoid prosecution & allowed to terrorize the community again.

He is crazy like a fox, if he is negotiating his charge down & then cursing & carrying on, he knows what he is doing. We do not have the resources, or a place to house the criminally insane & like the “insane” animal who murdered the Esquivel sisters on Euphrates in May 06, he belongs in jail.

Since he knows enough to negotiate, why is he not asking to be put to sleep.

Using the blade as an offensive weapon that could only cause injury or death to another person should ALWAYS attract a remand in custody pending trial. Unless there is a finding in the lower court of no case to answer, there must b a virtual automatic and rapid remand to the higher court.
A guilty verdict should always attract a death penalty. Such violent peraons are not wanted in a peaceful Belize and this message must be driven home. Those who want violence have the option of leaving the country and residing elsewhere.

I agree with Kim, I too remember this incident and this is what Channel 5 News said at the time. Just check it under Trial /Park Security Guard Charged wit Attempted Murder on June 30, 2009.

Dekel was a Security Guard for Belize City Council at Battlefield Park and caught Duane Staine urinating in the Park and Dekel told him to stop but Staine threw a rock at Dekel and Dekel defended himself with a knike.

    …………..
