The Chinese community is still reeling from the murder of fourteen year old Hellen Yu, a student at Edward P. Yorke High School. Her life was cut short on Thursday morning during a robbery at her family’s grocery store on Iguana Street Extension. Later tonight the Chinese Association will meet with family members to comfort each other and to discuss how the teenager will be laid to rest; possibly by cremation. The thieves gained entry to the shop when the family was taking in merchandise. They also shot Yu’s father, Ziren, who remains hospitalized and her mother, Zhuang Huang, was hit across the right eye with the gun butt. Aside from Yu’s immediate family who suffered a great loss, her extended family at E P Yorke is also feeling the effects of her death. Today News Five’s Marion Ali visited with two of Yu’s teachers and she files this report.

Since the senseless killing on Thursday morning of fourteen year old Hellen Yu at her family shop on Iguana Street Extension, the grocery shop has been closed. Yu, a student of Edward P Yorke High School on Princess Margaret Drive, would have advanced to second form next month. But instead her family is preparing for her funeral. Her killing has left her mentors at the school troubled.

“Just the other day I was explaining to Mr. Cardinez who Hellen was before this unfortunate incident. I explained to him that Hellen is the only Oriental student we have who is actually a Belizean on campus because she speaks Creole and she would “Yes Miss”, “No Miss”, “Gial, what is going on”. She actually speaks Creole, so that is why everybody knows Hellen by that.”

“Yes, she is a very good student. She has never been reprimanded for any bad behavior. She gets along well. There is a girl in her class who I know is going to miss her because she explained to me—I was dealing with her and she explaining to me Miss, Hellen is my only friend. Her classmates will definitely miss her as well as the teachers and staff here at Edward P. Yorke School.”
Hellen’s homeroom teacher, Telma Cansino told us that Hellen got along well with her fellow classmates and was not restricted by ethnic barriers.

“She blended well with all the others. She was never set apart like other Oriental students that would keep to themselves. She was one of the students in the class.”

“She spoke Creole well, fluently just like any ordinary Belizean person. She would share freely. I had never seen Hellen upset in her class about anything with any of her classmates. If she didn’t like anything she would keep it to herself, you wouldn’t know. And when scolded, Hellen was humble; she was a humble child. I will definitely miss her out of my class this year in second form.”
Police have not yet made any arrests but are following several leads and are looking for three suspects. Marion Ali for News Five.
Hellen’s father, forty-seven year old Ziren will be undergoing several rounds of surgery; first for his wounded arm and then for a bullet lodged in his lungs.
Come on fellow belizeans, lets all get together and protest for criminal laws to be revised and punishment to be altered to suit the crimes that are being committed in our small country. Something needs to be done NOW, not later! We are losing so many young innocent lives and we are keeping the bad guys safe on the streets. It is all becoming so common, that it will end up hitting each one of our homes. THIS MUST STOP!
Punishments No Deterrent. Over the past two decades the rise in violent crime in Belize, particularly in Belize City, has been phenomenal resulting in the average good citizen fearing for his or her safety. It is apparent that the present judicial and punitive system is no longer effective as a deterrent and that punishments are not producing the desired result.
The political leadership, presently seeming to be obsessed with delusions of its own importance, must act now to contain and eliminate the frightening and violent criminal element in our small country.
Penalties for violent crimes must be made extremely harsh, even to introducing chain gangs to carry out public works, and to introduce mandatory death penalty where life is taken or when firearms or offensive blades are present during commission of a crime. Those prepared to carry out such acts must be prepared for such punishment if they wish to be in our society.

The British used to hang to protect their people when they were in Belize, they even hunged a woman, now that their people are no longer in Belize they have the gall to tell us we can’t hang the violent criminals. That tells us they don’t care what happen to the people of Belize, no more mahagony folks, but watch the oil. They’ll be back, when all the Belizeans are dead, especially “BP.”

It’s so frustrating and disappointing to read the news and to find out about such calamities committed in our small country. I live abroad and had stopped reading the news for a very long time because every single day you would only read about the deaths taking place. I totally agree and would highly support that these b….. be hanged to death. No mercy whatsoever on them. If they can’t have mercy on the innocent people, then why should we have mercy on them? It’s embarrassing to know that such a beautiful country is going down the drain and that the tourists are surely not choosing Belize as one of their destinations to visit as before. We need our Belizean people to stand up and protest so that the crime can diminish. I so much wish that we would have NEVER EVER gained our independence. We would have been a nicer, cleaner, safer and much better country if we were still governed by England. Belize has become a country with (most) people hungry for greed and power and as long as there is selfishness among family members, neighbours, communities, ethniticies ect., Belize would never become what it use to be. Its time we rise above differences. We keep on calling on the churches, government, NGO’s but what about us. For change to begin else-where it HAVE TO start with us. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: Suggestion about hanging criminals is a very serious one, first of all our judicial system have not been proven competent in any way to make that step. Next thing, seems as our penitentiary has become a top 10 destination vacation spot for convicts. Speaking to ex convicts they express that they dont mind going back to jail and i quote ” Its very nice back de no bills no worries and yo get di best treatment betta than wen yo de out ya rada dan yo d buy fi ppl dey buy fi yo and bring it to yo bathe to time sleep to time and yo own security nobody cant do yo nothing.” I dont know if these comments are true but the evidence show. Its the same fellon that go back over and over again as if thats their vacation all expenses paid.
Mr. Goodman you state it correctly, I know we all are in agreement with the solutions. It does not matter if punishment doesn’t dissuade the crimes, what does matter is that the same criminals not get another chance to kill someone else. The heads of our nation (ruling and opposition parties) needs to come together and fight for the people of this nation instead of political control. This is Belize “land of the free” and not freedom to kill or do as one pleases.

These Chines people has suffered enough. No body has the the right to take another life and I mean nobody especially taking a child life. I believe the Chines people should round up the toughest between themselves and find every person that fits the description of a thief or murderer and erase them off the face of this earth. People that fits this crime description they all look alike with no jobs, not properly dress and riding a bicycle with stockings on their head. Even if you give them a job they will not work.

This is very sad. The Chinese community keeps hearing that its people are getting injured or killed in burglaries, robberies, etc. An innocent child was murdered in a robbery. I mean, why do you have to kill the poor child??? If you want money, then just go and take it but dont take a life!! Money can be gotten back, but a life taken is forever gone. Our objective is to earn a living like most of you do, only because we do it differently. Our people feel that we are getting slaughtered like animals. Evidently, when we walk around (anywhere in Belize), we get teased or get mocked by our language or by anything that you people find tend to find funny. Turn the tables around, lets say you are in a country far from your own and you look different than the locals and you get treated like worthless animals. How would you feel? So think twice before you act, we have feelings too.

Those people will come back and make sure they kill you for shooting at them. Revenge will always run in there mind. I know how these people are. I grew up in the streets. I was born in Belize too, only because i have Chinese blood flowing in my veins.
A lot of you have no idea how hard it is to grow up in a society that keeps looking down on you and slaughter ur people as if they were animals. In China, no citizen has guns! only the police, security, etc has guns. If u were found illegally with a gun, you will be executed! And in Belize u take a life of a human being and yet u are not dealt with. I do believe that murders should be punished in a way that they cannot kill again. If you dont hang the murderer, then cut his legs off or something. Make sure he doesnt kill again. that kind of punishment would both deter people from killing and it helps stop the murderers to continue killing.

I applaud the Chinese community in Belize for not opening their stores today to protest the death of this young lady.I also hope that this would send a message to the Government that the Belizean people will not allow the senseless murder of innocent Citizens.
