Two esteemed professionals in their field, Doctor Irvin Gabourel and Doctor John Gough were both charged with Disorderly Conduct at the Corozal Police Formation on August tenth.  Prior to their incarceration, the doctors got into a fight outside the custom’s building at the border. Doctor Gabourel has just returned to the country following his scheduled visit to the U.S.  He regretted his behavior but claims he did not provoke Dr Gough.  News Five spoke to Gabourel this afternoon to clear the rumors regarding the possible reasons the cardiologist attacked him.

Dr. Irvin Gabourel, Says Border Attack was Unprovoked

“The individual got out his car, closed his door, and came pointing in my face with very vulgar words, obnoxious words, threatening to beat me up. So I have to ask him. What? And he says I’m gonna beat you up. So I said well, I am here if you’re a man do it.”

Jose Sanchez

“What happened next?”

Dr. Irvin Gabourel

“Well, I’ll be honest with you; next, I don’t remember anything. I was told by witnesses that he threw a punch. I cannot tell you if that happened or not because at that point in time I had lost it. The only thing I remembered is being pulled off this individual by my wife and some other people who were standing around.”

Jose Sanchez

“Okay, the first thing you mentioned is that you avoided him, which means there was some tension there before. Where is that coming from?”

Dr. Irvin Gabourel

“You could—I don’t see any tension because in public, we have never been exchanging any words. Whatever happened with us in the past was basically confined to the B.D.F.  This is why I was surprised that he approached me in such a belligerent manner.”

Jose Sanchez

“Does it have to do with the incident when he was detained in the barracks I believe for a couple weeks?”

Dr. Irvin Gabourel

“You know, everybody keeps asking me that; of it has to do with his detention five years ago or whatever amount of years it happened. I don’t know. You know, fortunately for him, I don’t make the rules. The B.D.F. has rules and regulations that’s all its members have to abide by and this individual never wanted to play by the rules of the B.D.F. He refused to wear a uniform, he refused to come to work and I was his boss and it was my duty to write him up for not being at work.”

Jose Sanchez

“The other talk is that you may have said publically or on the internet regarding the other fight with the young man Zelaya.”

Dr. Irvin Gabourel

“You know I hope that they have their evidence well established because just like hundreds of other Belizeans I got an email that everybody got but that doesn’t mean I was the intellectual author or I was the one who wrote that mail. And at no time did this individual confront me or ask me or accuse me.  It was a fist fight and I think he got it out of his system and I got it out of my system. He provoked a fight, I won and that’s the end of it.”

Doctor Gabourel said that he is ashamed of the conduct that he participated in at the border. He wanted all young people to know that he does not believe fighting is the way to solve issues. He believes that professionals, in particular, should deal with differences in a civilized manner.  News Five tried to contact Dr. Gough and left messages at his office but up to news time our calls were not returned.

As far as I’m consern Dr, Goubrel’s action does not match with his words. He is telling young people that unpleasant situation can be settle without violence, and that’s what he was try instead of inviting a fight. Kind words turn away wrath. Both of them are macho man. I say I’ll whip you; you say bring it on. They are both highly educated individuals that should have take pen and paper and address each other to defuse the situation. No excuse as far as I’m consern. He is in a proffession that demands calm nerve and judgement to the best of you ability.

  2. BZNinCALI says:

Thanks for the apology & for not making excuses.

  3. MADDYVANDIJK says:

    I won.
    I won.
    I won the fight.
I think these doctors are sniffing too much of their own gas.

    …………..

  4. Anna says:

After all is said and done, you can only be so calm. When threatened with physical violence, there are times with calm words just won’t do. Some of us are more hot headed than others. Some can exercise more restraint than others. Nobody is perfect and professionalism is overrated.

Dr Gabourel just did what any man would do !!!!
If you have a …. tantalizing you, that is how anybody would react, seems that is not the first time Dr Gough behave like a bulldog with dr GAbourel, so he get what he look for, a good beating, I and to be honest with you, Dr Gough treat some of his patient wiht that same attitude especially poor poeple.

Look people, even though they are professionals they are HUMAN too, Jesus Christ of Nazareth had enough too you know, he whip the hell out of those people from his father house, too.

DR Gabourel, don’t feel bad, I would have reacted just like you, beat the hell out of them …. who feel like they are untouchables.

Dr Gough you find your match now COOL OFF man!!!!

Dr. Gough, my first suggestion to you is; GET some counseling QUICK. It will only get worst, as you encounter bigger obstacles in life; especially as your daughters gets older. I am a parent, and YES I have had stubborn kids; but taking it out on the other kid—–for the willful doings of your daughter—-IS WRONG. Or is it lost of control, that you cannot handle.
Dr. Gabourel, my father always told me when growing up; “IGNORE YOUR ENEMIES, AND DRIVE THEM NUTS”. Your apology is the first step, and showing a good example in the future; is next.
Admission of ones guilt, and an apology; is the first step to recovery and healing. Anger cannot be cured with a pill, it can only be cured by YOU; the person that is “out of control”.

so agree with u Anna, u can take so much only, patience is a virtue and sometimes people just try to push all buttons and I think Dr. Goubrel had enough of being bullied…Look how that other doctor bullied the kid who went to his house

  8. Charlotte a.k.a 'Your Ladyship" says:

Dr Gabourel I admire your honesty. It made me chuckle. It is unfortunate that you had such an experience and luckily your wife was there. I was certainly one who was shock and appalled to hear doctors fighting in the streets, but I also suggested that perhaps you could have been defending yourself.

Hopefully you can put this behind you very soon and get on with the important work you have dedicated your life to which is providing care and compassionate to fellow humans.

  9. Earl Grey says:

And now we get………..THE REST OF THE STORY!!!!

  10. aye man says:
