Two men charged for illegal guns and ammunition
There were two separate gun and firearm busts in Belize City over the weekend that resulted in the arrests of two persons. The two accused men are behind bars for the offenses of Keeping Unlicensed Firearm and Ammunition. This morning, twenty one year old Jaimie Chavarria of Ladyville and thirty year old Guatemalan national, Oscar Aguilar appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court to face their charges. Aguilar’s arrest came after police claim they found him in possession of a point twenty-two pistol loaded with three rounds of ammunition. The discovery reportedly took place on North Front Street at around four thirty last Friday while police were conducting a mobile patrol. Police allege that they observed one of two men holding a gun in the air and that when they approached him they also found ammunition matching the caliber weapon he was wielding in public. In court this morning, Aguilar pleaded not guilty but was denied bail due to the nature of the offense. He was remanded to the Hattieville Prison until October twenty ninth.
In the second incident, Chavarria is accused of carrying an unlicensed nine millimeter pistol and eleven live rounds in the La Milpa area of Ladyville. Police say that bust also occurred last Friday while on mobile patrol shortly before ten that morning when they spotted Chavarria acting suspiciously. When they approached him, Chavarria reportedly ran. He was pursued and apprehended but not before allegedly assaulting a constable. Chavarria was subdued and taken to the Ladyville Police Station where he was charged.
