Taiwanese government grants 26 scholarships to Belizean students
Twenty-six Belizean students have been awarded full scholarships to pursue higher education in the Republic of China on Taiwan. Twenty of the recipients are successful applicants of the International Cooperation and Development Fund (IDCF) Taiwan Scholarship Program for master’s and bachelor’s degree courses. The remaining six will study for graduate and undergraduate degrees through the Taiwan Scholarship Program. An added benefit is that the students have the option of applying for an additional year to study the Mandarin language. Ambassador for the Republic of China on Taiwan, David Wu, told News Five that the scholarship programs have been benefitting Belizeans for at least eight years and the current group of recipients is the largest so far. He says it’s a way of keeping strong ties between the two countries.
David Wu, Ambassador, Republic of China (Taiwan)
“This year we are very honoured and pleased to provide scholarships to twenty-six students from Belize. They will enter fourteen top universities in Taiwan. They will study two years to five years; graduate studies are two years and under graduate study is four years. However, they can also take the language enrichment course for one more extra year so together they will be from three to five years of study in Taiwan. They will major in Tropical Agriculture, Information and Communication Technology, Business Management, Nursing, Marine Science all in which Taiwan is the front runner in the international community. So these students are what we say the cream of the crop. We believe that after they study in Taiwan, when they come back they will contribute their learning in Taiwan and they will become the leaders of this country. We want to enhance the close ties between Taiwan and Belize. We take good care of them. My embassy, even wrote letters to all the universities where they will be going and ask the university to take care of them. So the scholarship will be given for them to include everything; their tuition, their boarding accommodations and everything in Taiwan. I think it’s very helpful for the new students to be oriented in advance here in Belize so seventh of August here in Belize City, the Alumni Society, working together with my embassy, we give them a very detailed orientation before they leave.”

“And do you also collaborate with the Ministry of Education here?”
David Wu
“Yes, actually we appreciate the collaboration of the Ministry of Education and Youth. We are very honoured by the presence of the Minister himself also the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the orientation and also the scholarship awarding ceremony.”
This group of twenty-six, brings the number of Belizeans studying on scholarship in Taiwan to eighty. Twenty-four students who graduated earlier this year recently returned to Belize.
Great to see something positive happening for Belizeans. Thanks Taiwan.
This is a great opportunity for Belize, out of these education Belize can reap great leaders, policticicans, doctors, and policemen.

Congratulations to all 26 scholars, this is an exciting opportunity to further your education and personal development. Keep up the hard work.
Will the Government have jobs for these hard working Belizean students when they return from abroad?
Weather they want some of the little bit of oil that Belize may have or don’t, I think it is a fair trade, a good sound education for oil.
these students will be educating their children, and this is what Belize need if anything should change.
congrats to the students…thank you Taiwan….thank you also Cuba for the many scholarship and the doctores….thank you Venezuela for the free eye treatment to hundreds of Belizeans…..and the U.S. ZERO SCHOLARSHIP….US only invest on its interest like security!!!!!!!!!!1
So is this excellent opportunity also an insult to all belizeans? Congrats to these young people make us proud and im sure u guys will learn so much and one day return home and put ur skills to work and make a change in our country which is what we really need.
I really wonder why the ‘great’ USA does not follow suit like Cuba, Taiwan and other countries and give scholarships to needy but intelligent Belizeans. Instead of spending billions on war materiel and alienating peoples all over the world, USA could well afford to assist other countries like Belize to improve their situation in life.
USA would instant;y win millions of admirers and would help in the development of many countries especially the 3rd world countries.
