Fourteen year old Hellen Yu was shot during an armed robbery at their place of business on Iguana Street Extension on August twelfth. Her murder rocked the Asian community in Belize to its core as another of their own fell victim to the spate of crime and violence gripping the city. Her father Ziren Yu was also critically wounded during the holdup of their store which ended in a shootout with the three robbers. Initial investigations into the incident turned up empty-handed despite a reward being offered for information that would lead to an arrest. That is until a tip led to the apprehension of eighteen year old Jermaine Matura, a resident of Arlington Drive. He is the nephew of brothers Glenford and Anthony Matura who were killed in March and July of this year in gang warfare. Today Jermaine appeared before Magistrate Albert Hoare and was charged for the murder of the fourteen year old student and the attempted murder of her father along with a string of other offences. But his mother told News Five that her son could not have been involved in the robbery.

“From the first day this murda happen dehn end up grab one person. Afta dehn da one person dehn staat look fi dis, the three fellows you know. When dehn started to look for the three fellows dehn call three names. Okay den so dehn end up have one in their custody but I just, I neva really know all ah dehn things ya because you know at the time I deh da work. But the night when I come home from work my sista explain to me that three young man run through di yard and one ah dehn stop da her faucet and wash ih face and wash ih foot. I know ah because he and my son partly grew up together. Dehn graduate from school together. I deh dah work now and I receive a phone call. Dah like round ten o’clock she dat dehn di ker my son fi di murda and robbery. I have people who could come and clarify that my son mih deh home di time dih babysit my bredda children deh, yoh know. I have people who could come and clarify that who sih the three person dehn run cause da through my sista, between me and my sista house dehn run through da areas, Arlington drive dehn run.”

So Miss Matura, explain it again. If your son was not among the three, his friend was maybe with the group & they ran into your yard, one stopped & used your water to wash his face. Your sister was there but no one saw or knew the young men & I’m sure the children your son was babysitting cannot tell the police that your son left your house with his friends to terrorize your neighborhood.
Conscience is learned & we have people without conscience raising children & no one can figure out why the kids are messed up. In one week, two eighteen year olds’ are charged with murder & what do they have in common, adults with no conscience who don’t give a damn about anyone else’s life, death or grief because they lost loved ones to murder &are under the misguided belief that lashing out & encouraging the youngsters to destroy the world around them will make them feel better.
A mother will always claim that her son is innocent, but is she willing to put her head on a chopping block to prove his innocence.
I do not give a s…t because he murdered a girl in the asian community, I give a s… that he is just a cold blooded murderer and that he would have kill anyone to take what is not his.
Loss of Life means nothing to this f….. therefore he should get the death penalty, see if I give a rats-…
well if this lady knows the three young men then why doesn’t she tell the police who they are? since to her, her son is innocent but as usal mom’s always cover for their son never the less he has a bad record as it seems along with his late brothers. it’s time for the police to investigate more into this lady as who they are since she knows them. aint she hiding a very important clue here?

18 years old and likely a murderer. I remember being 18 (many moons ago), murdering and stealing never even crossed my mind. What a change/shift in society where horrendous crimes like these are committed by younger and younger kids.

miss matura just imagine if jermaine was shot or one of the kids he was so call babysitting get shoot, you will be asking for justice……. damme let that little girl family get the same thing. wow take a stand for what is right you might start something that could change your community.
Honestly I feel for the Family of the murder victim but theirs two side of a story I’m not taking up for Jermaine Matura but I’ve seen case like this,seen friends get charged for crimes then didn’t commit, If we had real police officer to dig deep examine the crime scene fully and stop basing on hear so and go on the evidence they find no they don’t why you think majority of so call murderers walk lack of evidence like a said if we had a good and respectable police force that did a good police investigation than all murders would be were there are suppose to be in conclusion my prays and are with Helen Yu family I seriously pray u get the justice she so deserve
ship them to Iraq since they love guns and want to kill put them on the front line then we will see how coward they are.
Or Afghanistan – they could be used to clear the roads of IEDs, mines, booby traps and expose Snipers positions!
I hope Haru (Helen Yu) gets the justice she deserves.
