Government’s bookstore employees robbed at gunpoint
It has not been reported in any of the police blotters, but News Five has confirmed that the Government’s Bookstore on Gabourel Lane was the target of an armed robbery at around two-thirty last Friday afternoon. The thieves got away with well over two thousand dollars in cash and valuables. It was a robbery the Manager of the book store, Anthony Bradley, says was well planned and executed.

“Three armed fellows came in the store and demanded everyone to lie on the floor. At that time my office was closed and I wasn’t aware what was taking place. One came in my office and approached me with a knife. Upon the guy entering the office, I immediately react and I end up having a confrontation with him and I end up giving him my wallet and my cell phone in order for him to really leave the place. So upon leaving then I immediately called the police and several statement was made to them, the officers in charge.”

“How much did they leave with?”
Anthony Bradley
“After our assessment, they stole about two thousand five hundred and nineteen dollars and forty-five cents, property of the Ministry of Education. We have set up security as of today. We had managed to get surveillance system along with armed security because this is a serious time that we are in, in the city.”

“You believe that they were watching the place, studying your movement? Or the time of the year; people buying books.”
Anthony Bradley
“As a result of the only importer of books and the only supplier of books, a lot of people come here to purchase their books and therefore we had—I saw some movements Thursday evening coming out and I saw some people in a vehicle and I realize that these guys seemed very suspicious. So what I did, we wait until the guys moved and it seems that it was a planned robbery.”
Police detained one person soon after the incident, but no charges have yet been levied for the crimes.
Robbery is a big thing in Belize, second to actual murder in cold blood.
Businesses should take note of this and start hiring Security guards, or installed surveillance cameras to help catch the robbers.
