Placencia tour guides say no to cruise tourism

Proposed cruise ship tourism is running into trouble in the south. The Placencia Tour Operators Association has come out against strongly against this type of tourism on the peninsula.  According to a release, the tour operators object to cruise ship tourism because of  “a detrimental effect of cruise ship tourism on Placencia’s traditional overnight tourists, with known economic benefits from overnight tourism outweighing possible economic benefits from cruise tourism.”  The release also sites adverse effects of mass tourism on fragile marine and inland environments such as coral reefs and bird habitats; the group also alleges that local sites are over carrying capacity without the ability to accommodate mass tourism numbers. One significant point in the release states that less employment opportunities are available for Belizeans in the cruise tourism than in traditional overnight tourism. The Placencia Tour Operators Association concluded by asking government to invest more in the overnight tourism sector.

GOB, listen to what they are saying, investigate and again do what is right for Belizeans & do not allow Carnival to do to the south what it is doing to the city.

Dear Ministry of Tourism Chief Executive Mike Singh:

Just throw in the towel already.
Let’s move on to another project that garners the support of the villagers.

You might have our best interest at heart, but you’re not going anywhere with this deal.
Please, just listen to us and bring this proposed venture with Royal Caribbean to a halt.

You’ll be glad you did later, and we’ll be so grateful for it.

Fight for your rights Placencia! The last thing Belize needs is more Mindless Zombies or Cruiseship Tourists as I like to call them, stomping over our natural history. We welcome eco minded tourists from all over the world and shun those looking to exploit OUR Jewel. Wake up GOB. Congrats to the Placencia Tour Guide Association

Way to go Placencia. NO CRUISESHIP!!! Overnight stays is what BELIZE should be all about. Cruise passengers are all but destroying nature and not spending much while on shore.
