Safiyyah gets free lesson at Carnival Mas Camps

The revelry of the senior carnival bands continued on Thursday with the second night of mas camps. The judges were out making the rounds once again and so was our News Five crew that moved to the different venues. Safiyyah Mohammed visited the Eternity Masqueraders and Jump Street bands where the music and the moves were in full gear and the carnival fever was highly contagious.

Safiyyah Mohammad, Reporting

Thursday marked the ending of Mas Camp 2010. Our first stop for the night was Eternity Mas Band. All dressed in their red tees representing their major sponsor, the Eternity Masqueraders let everyone know, they may be the smallest Senior Mas Band but they are coming out full force.

We spoke to the organizer’s daughter and she told all about the theme for Eternity’s Road march this year.

Tara Williams, Daughter of organizer

“Our theme this year agriculture we’re portraying the major industries in Belize; the Sugar Cane industry, the citrus industry and the Banana industry. Our king is portraying King Cyrus, the sugar cane industry. Queen Naranja, the orange industry. Queen Amalia the Banana Industry.”

Tara explained that they may be a small group but you shouldn’t underestimate them.

Tara Williams

“We have sixty hype energetic revellers who are ready for carnival day 2010.  Some of them can’t even wait for carnival day 2010 and I can’t wait either. It’s gonna be fun, it’s gonna be hype. Please make it out to see carnival this year.”

Once again we were at Rio Grande Crescent at Jump Posse but this time we were there to see the Senior revellers. They didn’t have a large turn out for their senior mas camp but the ones who were there made their presence known. We spoke to Ms Welcome and she told us about her senior band’s theme for the road march.

Marina Welcome, Organizer, Jump Street Posse

“Our theme is hot and sexy. This year Jump street posse is doing some unusual costumes. So I know people will want to be out there to see it. And when you see jump street posse coming clear the road.  When you see Alize and Beyonce clear the road. We need space so clear the road and give us space to come.”

Safiyyah Muhammad

“Well guys that’s it for Mas Camp 2010. We’ve seen Mother Nature’s Creation and Jam Jam yesterday and today we saw eternity and of course, Jump Street Posse. Make sure you come out and support these senior bands and the junior bands on Saturday for the King and Queen Competition and of course on September eleventh for the actual road march. See you there. Bye.”

Lovely, I have never been to carnival in belize before, someday.
nice that the show is still going on, something positive to help take the peoples minds off the more serious issues in Belize.
