Major shake up in the police department

elodio aragon

There was a major shake up in the hierarchy of the police department late last week. Officer Commanding the Eastern Division, David Henderson, has been replaced by Assistant Commissioner of Police Elodio Aragon. Senior Superintendent Russell Blackett now becomes the Deputy Officer Commanding the Eastern Division, while Assistant Superintendent of Police, Alden Dawson, is now the head of the Crimes Investigation Branch.  The new top brass for the bullet riddled old capital gave their first press conference today regarding the recent shootings, as noted earlier in the newscast.   The new commander and his deputy, also spoke about their plans to prevent and solve crime in Zone Four, a section of Belize City that currently has more hot led than any other.

Sr. Supt. Russell Blackett, Deputy O.C., Eastern Division

“The concerned area which is the Zone Four Area has been narrowed down to certain blocks. We know for a fact that the problem lies within this area is a triangle. There is about three nests of housing areas that is difficult to police, however, we have strategized this morning how effectively we will get in this area and do some operation in there. We have we have a future operation. I will not be at liberty to tell you or otherwise I will be forecasting my strategy to the guys in the street. But definitely we will see a more focused effort on this—different aspects. We will be getting a bit more personnel on the ground to cut off certain zone areas—we know we have the Cairo Street area; we have the Orange Street area, Berkeley Street, Rocky Road. The main boundary is the George Street Area which is bounded by Plues Street, George Street, Berkeley Street and West Canal. We’ll be getting into that area effectively and as we speak, the plans are in place and by sometime later today you’ll be seeing the effects of that. However, I would like the public to understand, the problem lies with our young people. And I am telling you from the age of about ten years to about seventeen years. But mainly the core is ten to fourteen years. These youths are being used by these so called gang leaders. Why I say that is that we have a lot of dropouts form school and they fall easy prey and targets and are being used. We have noticed certain features in the operation procedure and planning where we scan the environment. As the operations officer, I have noticed movements as to how the older guys move compare to the younger guys—what role they play within the organization and we have planned to effectively deal with that.”

What could possibly change within that department when they keep on replacing idiots with idiots.
They are replaced from position to position yet the rules and guidelines remained the same, what a joke.

That department need new faces, people who are not related to everyone else.

Hope this makes a difference but I won’t hold my breath.

Can we get real about who is doing what? The older gangsters may be directing the youngsters but we are looking at generational violence & Belize is still small enough for us to know who these children are, who their parents are & the dirty deeds they have committed over the years. If a 14 year old is able to point a gun & taking a life, he/she should be charged as an adult & committed for life. If he does not breed, that’s one less spawn of Satan you have to deal with.

Will this shake up reduce corruption in the ranks of the Police department?Or is this just a way to have the Belizean Citizens lose focus of the real problems that is affecting the Jewel?

MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST, not all police leaders are idiots. I bet you anytime that ACP Aragon has a higher level of education than many in Belize and from a UK University. Furthermore, many times, even when they try to carry out their duties the right way, politicians intervene. So at the end of the day, the politicians are to blame for the crime situation.

These heads of police are intelligent and know what they are doing and needs to be done, so we should be asking politicians to stop bowing down and doing criminals favors because its wrong.

  8. WILLIAM FRIDA says:

You cannot pay Police officers minimum wage causing them to live in the same neighborhoods where the criminals live and expect then to do a great job.forthere more there is no psychological test or a in depth comprehensive test to evaluate new officers,I have seen the most stupidest ignorant people become police officers getting drunk at night clubs in there uniforms causing the public to not have any respect for them.a law enforcement career in Belize should be as comparable as paying a person working at a bank.most Central American countries do not treat law enforcement as a honorable career, its easier to have officers under payed and easily bribed so that politicians and leaders can be involved in elicit activity and not be concerned with being arrested, have you every notice with all the stealing that has happened within government there has never been a conviction.

Let us keep fighting together against crime and not give up hope. Give a helping hand to the police force because no matter what they are the first ones you may call to chase the ones attacking you who else? Take it one day at a time and sing Praises.
