Cop shot while responding to a robbery in progress
The lawlessness in the streets of the old capital is undiscriminating. It has taken many lives from as young as a seven year old to a seventy-four year old man. Last night it almost claimed the life of a police officer responding to a crime. According to reports, there was a robbery in progress and officers from the police formation on Mahogany Street responded to the call for help. But before they could locate the victim, an officer originally from Orange Walk Town was shot. Police Press Officer, Sergeant Fitzroy Yearwood told us more.
Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
“The police from Mahogany Street received information from our control room that a robbery was in progress somewhere on Partridge Street between Peter Seco and Morning Glory Streets. They left the station in a marked police vehicle to check into that report. That was a little after eight o’clock on yesterday’s date, the seventh of September 2010. When they got on Partridge Street, heading towards Mahogany Street, they saw two young men, on a bicycle, one on a handle bar. When they approached these men, the one on the handle bar ran into a yard, but the bicycle rider took out a firearm and fired several shots at the police vehicle injuring P.C. Abel Mendez who is presently attached to the Mahogany Precinct. P.C. Itza returned fire but didn’t manage to catch any of the two young men and he had to rush P.C. Mendez to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is currently admitted to ward in a critical but stable condition.”

“Any suspects have been detained?”
Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood
“Well we have one person detained and we are seeking two others. We are seeking another that we believe could help us in this investigation.”
The murder earlier this week of seventy four year old Elston Peters remains unresolved and so does the murder of seven year old Marquis Mahler.

The entire squad of police should have hunted those …… down and over-killed them, I am so fed with Belize.
GOB please get some cohones and start hanging these criminals. They are firing at the Policemen now which means that eventually these Policemen are going to be intimidated. As a result they are not going to perform their duties effectively.
ANYONE WHO SHOOTS A COP SHOULD GET ……LIFE IN JAIL with HARD LABOUR.
IF THE POLICE OFFICER DIES………………. THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD BE IN ORDER.
WHAT’S STOPPING THE DEATH PENALTY FROM BEING IMPLEMENTED???????
Was the Police officer wearing a bullet proof vest?? Its so sad that in Belize Police officers need to respond to crimes in progress without proper equipment…. cant we sell one of those extravagant ministerial vehicles to buy these lads BP vests?? So sad to hear no money is there for these necesities while our politicians ride in luxury… but yes we are ready to lambast the police department!!!!
Well said Roska! While others give their life’s blood in the service of our country is it not too much to ask that these politicians drive their own bloody vehicles.
69 murders this year already and not once has this pm come out and given his condolences to the families of these victims wow what a leader we have o well he must be in miami beach again with his gucci sunshades on.
WHEN THE LEADERS HAVE NO VISION……..The PEOPLE WILL PERISH!!!!!
