Rash children still missing

sr. supt. robert mariano

It has been two weeks since the Rash siblings, Onelia and Benjamin, disappeared without a trace while selling lime and craboo near the village of Cattle Landing in the Toledo District.  Since then authorities in Belize and Guatemala have been working both sides of the border trying to locate them.  Despite a massive search party being deployed in the area, the whereabouts of the two children is still a mystery.  The children were last seen on August thirty-first in the vicinity of Cattle Landing Village, some three and a half miles outside of Punta Gorda Town.  Since their disappearance, a local fortune teller was arraigned following the arson of a crocodile sanctuary belonging to American nationals Cherie and Vincent Rose.  Today News Five spoke via telephone with Senior Superintendent Robert Mariano, Officer Commanding Toledo Police.

“Today the police went all the way into the Dolores area which is also a border area.  Yesterday I had [a] meeting with the Comicionado de Santa Cruz, Guatemala [uhm] at the Jalacte Village police station.  Present at the time in the meeting was Major Requena from the BDF and Mr. Rash, the father of the children.  The authorities, or the comicionado told me, that [uhm] they had placed the missing person poster on every bus and taxi in his area and they continue to ask people questions about if in the event they have seen the children.  However, so far, the children are not sighted in that area of Guatemala.  Since then we have postponed the meeting until the tenth of October, 2010.”

A prayer service was held over the weekend in honour of nine year old Onelia and eleven year old Benjamin Rash.

Hate to say it but………… The parents are ultimately responsible………..

  2. taja says:

Mr Superintendent, Mariano you took bribery for these children’s lives from the American couple, so that you will not say or push the search for these missing children. You and the couple are held responsible, you on the becoming of a police officer who is to look after the safety of the community and the people. the commissioner should discharge your ——- head from the department and along with the couple, you all deserve to die.

  3. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

I think we all need to face the sad truth about these missing kids, it’s been over two weeks now, and all hope diminished.
I have since light a candle.

  4. ties says:

  5. Elgin Martinez says:

These kids have been missing for too long now.Hope a miracle would happen for them to be found.

  6. Edith says:

Poor babies, I think its time we accepted the truth. These poor babies r gone, God please guide them n shelter them wherever they r. This is too sad 🙁

  7. trikz says:

some of those crocs are form san pedro and they eat anything, many times those stray dogs meet their faith when venturing too close to the pond in san pedro, so what if that is what happened to the kids maybe they were jus looking at the crocs and went too close to the pond, even if it is an accident vincent you still had the responsibility to report it!! If that is what happened your conscience will never let you rest in peace!!

  8. ASa says:

Sad to hear such situation. Hope they are safe. however, though, FBI or CIA should intervene to investigate the rose family. Because you never know how serious it could be. after all many of them enjoy Belize as their hiding spot and take advantage of it.

  9. Karla says:

If these were my children i would personally walk up to these crocodile and cut them open and see what up in there? Come on People isn’t that the most obvious thing to do? How can they not find them??? Work Police do unu job Please…too much di happen…serious!!!!

  10. macal rivera says:

well all I can say is time is over, they are gone and I feel in heart they will not be found again,
I understand police brough in the K-9 unit, but sadly too late, I believe when it come to missing children, no time should be wasted, the search must start at the first word and the K-9 unit activated at the same time. I believe in my heart the roses people do have something to do with it, but I leave that in God’s hand, they persons resposible for the children dissapearance will face the creator of heaven and earth soon, Jesus Christ said that who ever touch his little ones, it would be better for them to tie a rope around their neck and throw themsleves in the sea, cause on judgement day they will not be able to bear what is in store for them.
I pray that where ever they are ,God is with them.SAD TO SAY THIS BUT THE PARENTS ARE TO BLAME!!
I am mourning for Benjamin and Onelia even though I didn’t know them in person but I fell love with these children, and as I look at the pictures above and my tears falling for them, all I can do is pray for them, they have a special place in my heart.I will never forget these angels, never.

  11. Belize says:

I say a background check needs to be done on the Rose’s.. Too many bad things have been going on in our country and a lot of it is being done by Americans.. Check on the news for all the arrests that have been made in Belize involving Americans that are doing harm to our nation and people.

Somebody knows the truth and is hiding it but God knows the hearts of men and he knows the truth. I pray that proper justice will prevail in this case and that the people that did it will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. If it is the Roses, I sincerely hope that they are not deported and have to spend time in jail here in Belize because if they are deported they will simply go free in America and they can do this to children there.

    Dear God,
Please let there be resolution for this family,
In your loving arms we entrust the lives of these children so they can return home to their families even if in the worst case scenario.
We pray father, that you will preside over this incident and touch the hearts of the ones involved that they may speak the truth and own up to their actions.

We ask you father that you will guide our leaders and police personnel to do the right things and provide for better leadership, clear consciences and soft hearts when dealing with issue like this and others that are affecting our little nation.

    We pray in Jesus’ name..
    Amen.

Children are curious but we need to remember that children who grow up “backa bush” know better than to go near crocs, an iguana’s tail or any animal that can harm them. I don’t believe they were playing near a pond housing crocs.

Maybe Mr. Mariano should be criticized for not responding sooner when the parents complained but if he followed police protocol, then that should be addressed & changed immediately. There is no reason to wait 48 or 72 hours when children disappear. As bad as things are in Belize, I do not believe that he would cover for anyone who is using human flesh to feed his animals for any price. We are screwed up but our self preservation instincts rules that one out.

It is time to go back to the parents, I am sure we have Kechi speaking officers, separate the parents & get the mother’s story instead of having the father & uncle run the show. Did anyone other than the father & uncle see these children on the road?

  13. Poor Woman says:

I call upon the Mayan community to stand up against these types of violence against their children. Do no stand by idle and watch your freedom, way of life and children be taken away from you like us in Belize City. Demand action from your police, unite and get to the bottom of this situation. Do not be intimidated by those who have money, those in position and the ignorant who does not understand your culture.

  14. pgmamma says:

i do feel sorry for those poor little angels n their family. i pray that wherever they are they’re ok. but come on belize u cant point fingers to anyone. not d roses, not d police because remember theres always 3 pointing back to u. only God and whoever has them know what happened to them. if the children were last seen in cattlelanding then how d hell would they get all the way to ACES. lets get the facts before we start blaming people and relying on the “obea lady”.

  15. binga says:

The superintendent of police took bribery for these children lives from that fugitive american,
they are held responsible and all deserve a bullet to their head.

  16. binga says:

The superintendent of police took is full of sh–t they r d ones for
they are held responsible and all deserve a bullet to their head.

  17. Mister Blow says:

    “Taja” & “ties” & “ASa” & “Belize”

Quit blaming the Rose family. There is absolutely no evidence of any sort that they had anything to do with this. None Your charges would be laughable if this were not such a serious deal. You are revealing yourselves to be ignorant and uneducated idiots. Get a grip and get a life.

  18. eve says:

We cannot say it’s the Roses and confirm when there is no evidence. Also, if they were last seen in far from the Aces then how they will end up back at the ACES sanctuary. Be not quick to judge of what you are not certain.

May God bless this children, may these children be safe and sound and may Jesus Christ guide them to their parents where they belong. In Jesus name we pray!

I believe miracles happen because everything is possible with God.

  19. Reverand says:

God Bless you all- May you stop throwing hate- we have had so many foreigners bring so much good to we – how quick to judge what we do not know for sure- we must stop to make we look ignorant in our words and actions- this is not how to be example to our children-
WE ARE BELIZE- WE ARE PROUD- NOT IGNORANT !
The truth always comes out- I beg for you to stop throwing hate around, we have some great foreigners here, we have great people who have done great things to help us- do not alienate them all. The world is watching our words, our actions and judging us by them.
You must BELIZE IN BELIZE !
The truth will come out- and then how cruel we will look.

  20. Belizean says:

It is unfortunate that these children are still missing. It is also unfortunate that both incidents- missing children and arson- are being used to trash the Maya community of Southern Belize and the rest of our beautiful country. Belize is like any other country who has its past and present experience with superstition and bush doctors. Every nation has a culture based on beliefs and a way of life. Our way of life in particular is what makes each of us unique in the eyes of others. Arson is punishable to the person who committed the crime, but an entire community is not to blame, in my point of view.

Why do the Mayan community have to be classified as savages and not human beings? A people of indigenous origin lost two innocent children, where is the compassion to their emotions? I must say that the Maya people are not savages and no Belizean is and never will be ashamed of themselves to have anyone living in this country. Not the Mayan community nor the rest of the migrating population. We seem to forget that the Maya community were here before industrialization became popular in the Americas.

I am a proud Belizean of a cultural mix of Mayan, Spaniard, and Garifuna. My country is a unique country that is striving to keep its cultural diversity, the Mayan culture being one of our most delicate. Shame on those who feel the need to rid our country of any kind of people. The land is for all children of God. God alone is the ultimate judge of our people and our nation.
