Epileptic man drowns
There were no murders today, but sadly there was still loss of life. A resident of Rasta Street was trying to deal with the city’s heat by going to take a swim in an area known as Old College on Monday. Thirty-two year old Dion Young told his family he was going to the Old College Area where Reggae Street borders the sea but he never returned home. His nephew told News Five that he found his body floating in the water this morning.
Elroy Perdomo, Nephew of Dion Young
“When I come home in the night around six. My uncle gawn swim and no come back home yet. Me and my ma gawn look fi ah dah sea. Yougn bwai come and tell we ih find eh clothes, ih walking stick and ih tennis. So my ma gone by Fabers Road, gone fi di man weh got wah boat and we di search fi ahn like round eleven, twelve so and we noh find ahn so we gone back early this morning. Me and one of my friends see eh head, like something black and anytime the way go so, it move. Di owner of the boat come and we gone out there and see ahn and we wait till the police come and then after that we just take him out when the police come.”
Jose Sanchez
“So he drowned. Did he have any sort of ailment that could have affected him while in the water?”
Elroy Perdomo
“He travel with fits.”
Jose Sanchez
“So that was probably the cause?”
Elroy Perdomo
“Yes sir.”
No foul play is expected since Young suffered from epileptic seizures.

Very sad, seems like a nice family. What a great story for his nephew to go look all night for him and then again in the morning. Elroy Perdomo you are an example of what I knew growing up in Belize. God will bless you all with strength to move forward. A young man with a good heart.
So, they knew he suffers epilectic seisures and let hime go alone…where’s the concern?? RIP Young.
The family knew that this guy suffers from seizures, why would they allow him to go by himself to take a swim? These type of illnesses don’t come with a warning sign, the family should have known better.
Is this normal in Belize where families allowed their love one’s to go swimming alone even if they are Epileptic?
That is sick.
My condoles to the family. This is a tragic accident, RIP Dion.
It’s unfortunately this gentleman met his demise perhaps while swimming. He could have had a seizure at home and die from it. Don’t cast blame on his family, they are already hurting from his demise. You can’t let a disease control your life! We don’t know if he was on anti-epileptics or if indeed he had an episode of seizure while swimming. Condolence to his family.
Dion was a grown man & it is possible that he went swimming without his family’s knowledge or permission which he had a right to do. Maybe he thought he had his seizures controlled through medication.
I can´t believe this outrageous situation happening in our country. It is damn outrageous. What is the government doing to stop this? Belize looks like the wild wild west now. People are scared of coming here now. Government must act and I ask the question: Where are these arms being bought? How is this being allowed? My god, isnt all these innocent lives enough?
