Several Schools honour memory of 8 yr old Eyannie Nunez
While the entire Indian community will keep their shutters down on Thursday, schools throughout the City will also do their part; some by lining the streets where the funeral procession for Eyannie Nunez will pass, others will attend the service. But one institution that will make a stronger statement is the University of Belize’s Faculty of Education in Belize City. Today, lecturer at UB, Sylvaana Udz, told News Five that several of the lecturers have decided to attend the funeral. All Saints Primary’s Principal, Therese Roches also says they will honour their fallen student.
Therese Roches, Principal, All Saints Primary
“We are going to show our love, our respect and we are going to give full honors for Eyannie. Tomorrow we will have a guard of honor for her, we will bring her in, we will carry her to the church. We’re going to have our students involved where they will belonging up and show their love, their appreciation and their respect to Eyannie. So that’s our plan for Eyannie, we will spend the last hour with her. She was a little girl that was always hopeful. For eight years old, her teacher said she came back very vibrant. She was answering all the questions, she was getting her work correct. She came back wanting to make it and do well at Standard one. Eight days were well-spent for her in standard one. She is a little girl who likes to pray, she knows the colors that she liked, she knew who she wanted to be. She had that faith that she could always say don’t worry it will work out. Don’t worry if you don’t have any money to give me for feeding program mommy, I will get my food. You know I will eat at school. Don’t worry mommy, if you don’t have it I can do without it. She was actually her mother’s very, she called her, her little angel because she seemed to have done a lot in guiding her mother when her mother was at that point where she might have been worried about them. I believe that she would have been a successful Belizean.”
Sylvaana Udz, Lecturer, U.B.
“A large segment of the Belize City University of Belize, Faculty and Staff are just totally fed up with the senseless violence as are many other people. And one of our lecturers, an adjunct, Miss Lisa Alvarez, who has been with us for years now—she does night classes for us in the Faculty of Education. Her dad was a victim of this senseless murder this week, Mister Apolonio, he is being buried this Friday. And of course little Eyannie, her mother is a very close friends of several of our departmental support staff. And we heard a call from the Belizeans against Violence, Miss Schakron, and we said but we can do something, we can join this. U.B. is a big sprawling entity of so many people so it’s hard to get all the thing done in writing with management, so we informed our respective dean at the Faculty of Ed. and the provost and basically we are not holding classes. Several at the moment, almost a dozen and we know more coming on tonight, of the lecturers are informing their students with due regard that we have a responsibility to them, because they pay for this product called education. So, we are making up the classes and putting a plan in place as the provost is insisting naturally and rightly so. But, we need to show the Belizean Against Violence movement that we are not just there educating people for the academia, we are aware of the society and what is happening at it has hit home—it’s hit one of our lecturers and little Eyannie who could have been a future U.B. student. So we are saying solidarity. Please, if you have a business and you are able to join in this tomorrow. Education is a business, all the schools joining in. We only want to say, you have to take a stand. Here is an opportunity to say I am tired of this senseless killing. Stop it! This is a Belize City driven by the Faculty of Education and Arts, whose lecturer was directly affected.”

“Do the students support the cause as well?”
Sylvaana Udz
“Every student we’ve spoken to, who we’ve been contacted and in fact, even the Belize City Student Government was meeting when I left them—I do believe it’s a newly formed student government in the city—and I know they themselves want to have a presence there. It’s a group of us form the city faculty of education and some others are attending the funeral tomorrow. We are taking the Belize flag. This is a Belize thing—it noh matter what p what q, what anything you are as long as you value the fact the life has value. And why are we educating if it’s not for life and to make life better. So yes it’s a Belize thing now and it’s hit one of our own, one of our lecturers.”
Ms. Roches, I’m not a crier but I wanted to cry as I read what you are doing. Thank you & the rest of the teachers & schools for stepping up. All Saints is one of the smaller schools in the City & for years had an excellent reputation & there is no question that all the children knew her & wanted to be a part if her final farewell, I am so proud of you.
RIP Eyannie and hope your killer or killers be brouht to justice.
Nice hearing that our Belizean people are willing to come in solidarity to support this worthy cause. That’s what i am talking about Belize unity is strenght this is the only way we’ll accomplish any and everything as a people.
Go UB!!! Im happy to see that my University is Standing for what is right.
First of all my deepest condolence goe’s to the Pitts family. With that said this crime situation is out of control. As a result we as a people need to start taking responsibility for our kids actions. If you know your brother or sister is in any type of criminal activity then you need to talk to them .Reason is that if you condone such activity every member of your family can become a victim.
My heart bleeds inside as I read this news. Mr Prime minister ! what are you waiting for, God places you as prime minister of this beautiful Belize country. be reminded, God will hold you responsibly for the way the country is going to a waste. the crime and violence problem in Belize can be minimize or stop. If God so choses he can replace you with someone else. In the old testament we read where when a nation has problems beyond their control, they send for the man of God to inquire of God. As I pray for my beloved country I see a few things we can think about. The guys on the streets are saying two things ” I no afraid of the police and I no afraid of prison”. well what are you going to do about that. I say change the setting of the prison even if t means changing the people in charge. Do something about law and order, whats the use of having law and not enforcing them. wake up human rights, this is about all belizean.
God bless belize
the time has come for us to take a stand for what is right.
My condolences to the family of this child. Its hurts to loose a child in sickness imagine to have some take their lives how much more that will hurt. This is nonsense. This has to stop!!!!! Out kids are being robbed of thier future. Parents need to start raising their kids like the old days. Our youths are out on the streets doing all this …. Please parents take charge of your kids. Try to raise your children the best way so they can grow up to be different people. This situation brings tears to my eyes. I know how it would feel to loose a child like this. You put your children to sleep and think they are safe and they are not. Wow i can imagine something like that happeing at my home. That would drive me crazy!!!! STOP ALL THIS VIOLENCE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY!! STOP
This is the OFFICIAL PROCLAIMATION that ………. SEPTEMBER 16TH 2010
….. be declared……..
EYANNIE NUNEZ DAY…………
that we may not forget that she gave her life to bring our Nation together for PEACE AND SAFETY ……. especially for CHILDREN.
The people directly involved in this madness is not being reached through this internet medium.
When we say stand up for this cause, I can’t imagine what it’s doing only showing respect and sympathy to the lost child and her family.
We need to find solutions. Reach the right people. Bring back the old days YES. Along with that also bring back the days when neighbors looked out for each other and for each other’s children. People back in the days weren’t just able to give a bread or a plate of food to the unfortunate but they were able to discipline as well when they saw the neighbors kids getting out of line.
In my community, I give what I can and I DO what I can. Though it robs me from rest, I have the neighborhood kids over on weekends and holidays playing with my kids. I monitor them. I tell them what’s not nice to say to each other. I tell them what’s not allowed and they listed. Most of the times I have to remind them but that doesn’t mean I’ll them not to come back.
See, the way I think about it is this. If they’re are not there, they would be roaming the streets and going to other homes that may not be teaching them the right way. So it’s a sacrifice. I make that sacrifice although it really upset me that the parents allows these children to wander and roam the neighborhood from dusk till dawn.
So Belizeans, make that sacrifice. Encourage a child today. Help a child today. THAT’s one of the solutions to this problem we have in our society today!

Lion………….. GOD BLESS YOU!!!!
EYANNIE just guide us upon dis land. continue to pray sis eyannie is in a better place. pray make god give us justice becuz one day we all will get ours justice. she knw dat we love her.
she in a better place looking upon us smile lik usually .
this is the FIRST TIME i’ve seen something that makes sense that we all can do about our situation. especially on this comment board. i swear it’s like some people ‘say ting jus fi air out dey mouth’. RESPECT, LION.
If I wanted my political party to win the next election; since I don’t have a leg to stand on, I would find and pay some undisciplined, fatherless, un-educated, want to live above their means young men and pay them money for every person they kill. And they have to be dead before you can collect. Pay-off the investigation & if it seems like things are not going in my favor well threaten or kill.
This way everyone blames the government or pm, then next election….boom I WIN.
WHAT A COUNTRY.
Good morning, I have been following the disapperance of the Nash children and I find it appalling that no reward or bank account has been set up for these children. Belize is sending the wrong message when they care more about the yankee dollar and a couple of crocks then they do for these missing children. I have tried to set up a reward bank account for the safe return of these children however not being a Belizean makes it difficult at best. Come on Belize you are better then this. Step up Channel 5 and open the account. I will donate and so will a lot of other people. It is about the children!!!!
Everyone talking about what can be done some even blaming the Prime Minister.Reading these comments I haven’t seen any constructive solution,At my church we pry. Belize is top of our list but we pray for countries all over the world. Instead of tearing down our leader we need to pray for guidance for them. People have to stop and realize that there are a lot of senseless killing all over the world. The killers are more equipt than the peace officers. I am a Belizean who loves my county, but now I’m scared of even encouraging anyone to visit Belize. I ask myself a lot of time “Where is the paradise I use to live”. I remember the days we use to sleep with our windows open to get the fresh air. Please let’s come into cooperate prayer for our country. Don’t wait for something to happen before we come to solidarity, we need more activities for our youths, they need guidance. I’m talking about positive guidance. The street is taking control of our youths. Churches of Belize and all over the world, I appeal to you to pray for Belize and our youths. Please plea the Blood of Jesus over them before their blood continue to cover the streets of Belize
