Ministry of Police enforces law & order with homicide unit

doug singh

Three days after the bloodiest weekend in the old capital, the Minister of Police, Doug Singh, presented a situation report on the three hour mayhem which occurred on early Sunday morning. As many as eighty persons have been canvassed and questioned in the neighbourhood where those murders occurred.  And more than a hundred others spent the night in the lock up prior to and during Saturday’s carnival as a preventative measure to the violence.  As you now know, that didn’t stop the criminals. This morning Singh and the police high command also spoke about new measures they want to put in place to deal with the carnage and bloodbath. News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

The six murders reported over the weekend including the shooting of an eight year old and a sixty year old prompted the Ministry of Police to address the increased violence in the country.  At a press conference this morning, Minister of Police Dough Singh, heralded the enforcement of law and order with a homicide unit.

Doug Singh, Minister of Police

“We’ve reorganized the department and established a homicide department the number one problem from a crime standpoint, but of course homicide is increasing. Requires additional emphasis that should help us to address the homicide situation.”

The new C.I.B. boss gave a progress report on four weekend city murders which has so far netted one detention. A.S.P. Alden Dawson believes the murders were not related.

Asst. Supt. of Police, Alden Dawson, Head of C.I.B.

asst. supt. Alden Dawson

“We have canvassed neighborhoods of all four and have interviewed over eighty persons who could have aided us with useful information. We have detained and interviewed one person in respect to little Eyannie Nunez murder and we are looking for one other person in connection with the murder. Eyannie was caused over a firearm by a family member, refused to hand over back that weapon that may have led to that shooting. With respect to the murder of Mister Davis, we detained three persons, interviewed them, we have impounded a small red car believed used to transport shooter in that incident. With respect to the Marlon Zelaya murder, several witnesses taken statements. In the case of Mister Salome, that investigation the progress of that one is slower than others. Knowing that we have no motive for Mister Salome murder is concerned as well as the seventeen year old, there has been no motive.”

One theory for the weekend shootings is that they were a response to the one hundred and thirty-two detentions that occurred to keep peace during the carnival, and to increased patrols in hot zones.

Crispin Jeffries, Commissioner of Police

“We kept some not more than a one hundred over night. Several detained during carnival, we used a bus and we had about thirty-five, thirty-two, we were transporting them back and forth. It was necessary at least. One of the firearms used to kill one of the persons, was left to safe keeping that is a part of the story out there. But I am behaving like the public, passing rumors.”

Commissioner of Police Crispin Jeffries discussed other possible motives for the other weekend shootings.

Crispin Jeffries

“The incident on Castle Street, some of our information indicates it si the result of a fight where someone was hit on the head with a bottle, Zericote Street because of a stolen firearm. Similar indications with one of the other cases, and the third one is yet for us to confirm the other information. No indication that these incidents are a result of any displacement or reaction to the police made. In fact, the police made a number of detentions on the night of the carnival and that does not say that we were not prepared during the carnival or we are not doing things now.”

Doug Singh

“We can’t get very far with out family and neighbors absolutely necessary that the public supports us.”

And it is absolutely necessary that the police department does a better job while protecting us. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

We need to build a new prison way down in Toledo.

IF WE KNOW WHO TO LOCK UP, WE KNOW WHO THE TROUBLE MAKERS ARE……

In my time here on this planet, Ive come to realize that the biggest crooks
are those in suites and ties, and majority of those in uniform, and it’s
sad because most people trust them, and some just outright scared. The point
is, this whole modern day political systems are built on deception, and governments around
the world including Belize are operating on what is called (Color Title) yea, that is what these
good old constitutions are. Can any thing good comes out of deception? No wander people
are perishing and can’t get Justice. Can’t wait to see the expressions one people face when they
come to find out that everything they’ve ever been told, and sole heartedly believe, in is a lie. YHWH Nissi

Dear Mr Singh, I know you guys are trying to control crime, But what I want to ask you is that you make sure these criminals are locked up forever in jail, and please make them life miserable,
You guys need to take back Kolby and let us belizeans run the show, after we man handle those criminals I bet you they will never want to commit another crime. From what I understand too much good life back at Kolby, and please don’t forget I know Kolby is being paid good money to run that place, check on them too, maybe they are the ones behind crime so they get more of tax payers money. from previous news cast I understand prisioners from Kolby get they night out of town, sometimes I wonder why! and for what!

Capital Punishment! When are we going to start to HANG these ……… who snatching away innocent lives.

When will the government enforce – CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, if there was some serious PUNISHMENT in place – the crime rate will decrease drastically. Mr. Jeffries remember those good old days when you use to come through the alley (on Albert Street) to visit my grandmother and our family – how nice it was when you could walk home late at night and get home safe and sound without looking over your shoulders … you have been in law enforcement since I was little girl, well over 30 years how come this is happening on your watch. My heart aches for my Sweet Belize.

  6. josie says:

  8. Earl Grey says:

  10. Sergeant Major David A, Retired US Army says:

As I said awhile back, the minister of justice and law enforcement need to bring in the BDF along with the police force and form a curfew unit to patrol
the streets at night to keep the criminals inside. Gave passes to the people that need to be out there to show the patrol unit when stop for any reason.

Earl, an escapee in Toledo may end up like mincemeat if he runs into the wrong community.

Then again, that may not be so bad. It may be a good example to the others

  12. justice says:

Earl Grey, the only thing hard core criminals need is a bullet to the head. Why keep housing and feeding them so that they can continue enjoying their life? Taxpayer dollars should not be spent to prolong the life of murderes and rapist, bullets come cheap and the only safe place to keep people like this is in hell!
