Soul food: Gospel singers want to lift the mood of Belizeans

mikal evans

The entire country is still reeling from the bloodbath in the old capital over the past weekend. And for those who find comfort in the gospel in the midst of the darkness, a group of singers are hosting a concert this weekend with a positive message. Belize’s Mikal Evans and Jamaican artist Dwayne Murphy are the main gospel artists involved in the event, which will be held this Saturday at the Central Assembly Compound on Freetown Road. The doors open at seven and the show starts at eight. But if you don’t think gospel music can be fun, well Evans says the concert will be as hype as any other and Murphy has two brand new singles that will be premiered at the concert.

Mikal Evans, Concert Organizer/Artist

“The concert is a gospel concert, it’s a Christian concert and it’s going to be featuring myself and Dwayne Murphy from Jamaica. It’s his second time here in Belize and we’re gonna have some other Belizean artists as well as LTL Dance Group who is going to be performing. It’s basically to bring some positive Christian entertainment during the whole September celebrations.”

Delahnie Bain

“I’m sure you know the type of music that most young people nowadays are into. How do you encourage them to come out to a concert like yours?”

Mikal Evans

“Well, we are bringing it all; soca, Punta, reggae, dancehall. It’s the same beats just with the real message. So if they feel like they’re gonna come to an Amazing Grace setting they got it twisted real bad. So it’s gonna be a real fun time and it’s basically with the same idea of the YC event and all of that stuff.”

Dwayne Murphy, Jamaican Gospel Artist

“You can just expect an outburst of youthful praise, enjoyment. My message is always about enjoying yourself as a Christian, enjoying yourself as a youth and I’m just here with my brother Mikal to just praise and mek di people dem enjoy themselves.”

Delahnie Bain

“Being a young person yourself; your message, is it something that the other youths can relate to?”

dwayne murphy

Dwayne Murphy

“Most definitely. I mean I’ve been through a whole bunch of stuff. When you talk about addictions, when you talk about peer pressure, low self esteem, I’ve been there so I know what it feels like to be a teenager and to have all those burdens on your shoulder.”

Delahnie Bain

“What kind of an impact are you hoping this concert will have considering the crime and so on?”

Mikal Evans

“Definitely we believe that the church should be the moral fiber of the community and so if we are silent, if we are hiding our light then the darkness will prevail. And everything that’s happening in our country is a result of the Christians sitting down, doing nothing cause we’re the ones that need to get up and to shine our light and to bring truth into the lives of these people who are filled with anger, hatred, who have been abused, who have been molested, and these different situations.”

The entrance fee is fifteen dollars in advance and twenty at the door. You can call Evans at 607-0435 or 522-2755 for more information on where to get tickets. Arrangements are also being made for groups coming from other districts.

Maybe the Jewel needs to promote more of these Gospel Artist.Respect to Evans and Murphy and best wishes.

  2. BZNinCALI says:

We need to bring a little spirituality into the mix.

  3. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

Those who believe in prayers are all welcome to sit and flood your minds with the words of the bible, but don’t just listen to the words people, listen to the actions.

  4. Robert says:

Probably, the young people who need the the Gospel the most can’t afford the entrance fee. Sooo, either let them in for free or someone please sponsor them. I heard a wonderful quote from a pastor a few years ago ; “the church is like a bunch of people gathering in a room together holding flashlights, and they are shining the lights on each other”. The LIGHT MUST SHINE IN DARKNESS>

  5. Earl Grey says:

Sounds like THE DEVIL’S MUSIC TO ME………………dancehall, Punta???????? Give me a break.

Where is the reverence for GOD???

The CHURCHES CONTINUE TO FAIL US.

THEY SHOULD BE TALKING OF THE SANCTITY of HUMAN LIFE and what a PRECIOUS GIFT it is.

  6. The Educated One says:

The enemy comes to Steal, Kill & Destroy. Jesus came to give us Life and Life more abundantly. Entertainment is good for the Flesh but it does nothing to the Soul…The Souls in Belize, need salvation. The unadulterated Word!!! They’ll feel good for the concert and will leave with their lives unchanged and their minds un-renewed.

Until the Word of God reigns and the Church stands up and do its part, the situation will NOT change.

Right now, there is Stealing, Killing and Destroying happening in our country…sounds like work of the Devil to me….

My prayer is that the movement of the church is greater and more impactful….concerts are great but they need to be coupled with the Word!

  7. Call Out says:

Believe in REASON my dear people.

The power lies with US — the HUMANS.

We can aspire to greater good without supernatural beliefs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. UHC IC says:

Call Out, we are firstly spiritual beings. Don’t forget – that is the first thing that makes us different from animals. What is happening in Belize City – the crime is very supernatural – in fact, we can hardly figure it out – for sure the Police and GOB can’t figure it out! Maybe not even the Church in general. I don’t think the concert will be very effective when it comes to crime, but I think its a better step than closing all our businesses for a day. How will closing my business cure the criminal element? I thought we needed to create more jobs and business to solve the criminal and poverty elements?! Maybe someone wants to enlighten me too.

  9. blvnjah says:

GOOD LUCK, GET THE WORD OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR OUT. AND HAVE SOME POSITIVE FUN FOR A CHANGE.

  10. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

Everything is about money in little Belize, and that is the reason why the animals keep on killing.

Even the message from the bible is no longer free of charge; if you want healing it will cost you a pretty penny. This is what I call the corrosions of sacred possibility.
No wonder the churches are empty they were always run by the devil himself; his children are now out there doing his work.
