City Boys United wins 2010 Belize Bank Super League Football title

James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderly and this is Sports Monday.

The decisive Game III for the 2010 Belize Bank Super League Football title was staged on the neutral turf of the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk yesterday as City Boys United FC and Nizhee Corozal made their final bid for this football championship.

With so much on the line it is no surprise that the level of physicality in the ballgame is unacceptably high as evidenced by this take down of Deon McCauley of City Boys.

In fact, McCauley who plays professionally in Honduras appears to be a marked man when again he is taken down by Antoine Castillo so referee Romel Carballo tries to impose order with the issuance of a yellow card.

In the meantime, McCauley gets to first good look at goal for City Boys with this chest move but fails to get enough on the ball to make it a serious threat.

Like I said, this match is rough and this time Darnell Mossiah is the recipient of severe punishment as Tyrone Linares really does a number on him.

Nevertheless, it’s Corozal with the early momentum and Juan Ramirez should have given his team the early lead off this left foot shot.

At the other end Tyrone Muschamp gets this look at goal but there was never enough on the shot to bother Benito Morriera in the Corozal goal.

Corozal comes right back with this volley from Michael Whittaker but it’s right at Charlie Slusher and at intermission the ballgame remains scoreless. For certain the action picks up in 2nd half as Sergio Villanueva looks to open the scoreboard with this launch that Charlie Slusher saves but not very convincingly.

Folks we’re 60 minutes into the ballgame when Deon McCauley mounts this individual effort that culminates with this wonderful right foot push which finds the far corner and City Boys take a 1-zip lead. Raymond Gentle then gets this open look at empty goal off this Jason Young pass but misses the target by a mile.

At the 67th minute of play, Uriel Yam sends this ball into the danger zone, poor defence by City Boys gives Sergio Villanueva this chance to score and he makes the most of it as he ties the ballgame at 1 apiece.

On this Nizhee press Antonio Castillo can give his team the lead but his shot sails high. Still Corozal can win the title in regulation time when Uriel Yam centers into the box and both Sergio Villanueva and Antonio Castillo failed to make contact with the ball when they should have, so we now head to overtime play for a 2nd week in a row.

In the 1st fifteen minutes of overtime play Charlie Slusher makes an important intervention off this Uriel Yam center that is intended for the streaking Ariene Swaso.

Of this Whitfield Patnett spot kick Deon McCauley goes to the bicycle kick for the lead but Benito Morriera eventually handles this situation. Whitfield Patnett who had his best outing in the championship series then gets this open look as goal in the 2nd overtime but pulls it wide and it now becomes clear that the 2010 Super league title will have to be won from the penalty spot.

Just like last week in Game II at the M.C.C. Edwardo Perez is the lead off penalty kicker for Nizhee and El Gigante beats Charlie Slusher easily.

Again in a replay from Game II City Boys sends Dienmercy Pierre for the first penalty kick and he looks real professional as he sends Morriera the opposite way for the tie.

Next up for Corozal is Antonio Castillo and again he allows Charlie Slusher to deny him the goal. Deon McCauley then steps up to score the 2nd penalty for City Boys. Meanwhile, last week Benito Morriera got the better of this counterpart in the penalty kicks, today he is denied by the crossbar. Godson Mitchel gets his turn to help his team and he makes it a 3-1 score.

Corozal’s 4th kicker is Uriel Yam and guess what he is denied by the crossbar which automatically gives City Boys United the big W and with that the 2010 Super League title and of course $25,000.00 in prize money.

“If it goes to penalty, i knew I had the edge. There is no goal keeper in Belize that can stand up to the standard of Charles Slusher.”

James Adderley

“I thought you had this game under wraps when it was at 1-nil. I keep telling you about your defensive failures and you are not taking me serious.”

John Pollard

“That was a fundamental mistake on the defensive end. But after that happened. They gained back the exposure that they needed and everybody came together. James we got some break on them, we didn’t utilize, but at the end of the day, a win is a win. City Boy, # 1 Super League History made in Belize.  Without City Boys, there ain’t no City.”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez, Owner, City Boys

“I honestly feel good for these Boys. We believe that Belizeans must give them an opportunity. I am very happy.”

James Adderley

“Were you ready for the win this year?”

Anthony “Boots Martinez

“Yes sure ready for the win. But at the end of the year, I maintain my statement that it is not only about winning for City Boys, it’s about doing something positive for the ordinary people of which we believe are marginalise and we think something positive must come on top.”

Charlie Slusher, Member, City Boys

“I just wanna thank god for this victory. This week was very stressful for me because I got a serious injury that was troubling me. I couldn’t even work out this week. I have to thank my wife, I have on her girdle today but this is something. I know my team needed me today but i was in a lot of pain but I have to thank god for giving me the energy and the will to be there for my team today.”

James Adderley

“Did you see yourself in the championship circle this early with the City Boys United?”

Charlie Slusher

“Well I know that when I looked at all the teams, I know that we could do it. We wasn’t the favourite team, we were the underdogs, but I liked the young team that we got and I know that as long as we play our heart out, I know we can do it.”

James Adderley

“How were you able to get that goal that you eventually came up with fifteen minutes into the second half?”

deon mccauley

Deon McCauley

“Well we kept focus in the game. Our team played our hearts out and I end up in the back there with one defender and I decided to take him on and put the ball in the back of the net.”

James Adderley

“So how this win rates among all those titles you have?”

Deon McCauley

“Well I am young, so it’s big for me because I love this team. Came all the way from Honduras and stayed another week just to play these games and to help out my family. So it’s a big one for me.”

We say congratulations to City Boys for bringing the 1st Super League title to Belize City. In other football news, play in the Caribbean Motors Cup saw San Felipe Barcelona burn Toledo Ambassadors 1-zip, Griga United edged the San Pedro Sea Dogs 3-2, FC Belize bombs Belmopan Blazers 4 to 2 and the BDF beat Hankook Verdes 1-zip.

Turning to the cricket scene we caught up with the 20-20 cricket competition over the weekend with Berlan facing Easy Does It. First to bat is Easy Does It and Mytrelt Anthony is their big performer today as he bats in a game high 31 runs.

However, David Dawson of Berlan shut down the set by taking 4 wickets and limiting them to 97 runs. In their turn at bat Percy Flowers struck for 20 runs and while Denver Banner took out 2 wickets.  Berlan was unable to amass 99 runs with 5 wickets to spare as they pick up the big W.

Jah overall, I’m James Adderley.
