Moo! When the cows come home, beef will be sold to Mexico

dean barrow

On Independence Day, Prime Minister Barrow, gave a glowing report on the state of the economy which was contrary to the view of the Leader of the Opposition, John Briceño. According to the Prime Minister in the same Independence Day speech, Belize is poised to immediately begin the exportation of cattle to Mexico.

Dean Barrow

“I am pleased to announce that Mexico has now cleared the way for the export of Belizean cattle to begin, with an initial three thousand head destined almost immediately to go overland to our neighbor and friend. The thesis I am trying to propound, ladies and gentlemen, is that these advances of ours despite the global crisis, came as a result not so much of luck as of pluck. Pluck involving a creative and resourceful productive sector; and a government determined to enable the economy by increased investment spending, plus concessions, incentives and access to credit for the national drivers of growth and development.”

That sounded like excellent news so we did our checks but are most surprised at what we found out. Exportation to Mexico may be in the works, but it is certainly not about to happen in the immediate future. One member of the Belize Livestock Producers Association confirmed to News Five that while most of the requirements for exportation have been met, there is still a long way to go. The testing of animals, for example, has still not been worked out and funding for the testing could take at least four to five months to be finalized. As to the enabling legislation, no one seems to know about it but we are reliably informed it is also not finalized. So from what we gathered, it is likely that it will take another year before all the T’s have been crossed for even the first head of cattle to be sent across the border. We don’t know where the PM got his information, but we do know that for the time being, the beef from Belize will not be served on the Mexican tables “almost immediately.”

This piece of news is lurking in the shadows and while it slips into irrelevance, this might take much longer to actually benefit from Mexicans feasting on your beefsteak, which should make you all yearned for the taste of plantations.

  5. rootsman says:

Barrow is so much in need of announcing achievements his administration has made that he has gone that low as to create stories, who do he think he is fooling or can fool I guess these lawyers are all the same no matter what role they are playing seems to believe they are the most brilliant minds in the country, if he is trying to achieve something maybe he should tackle the crime situation in the country now that’s a big one and will surely be noticed but then if he ever solves that problem then his overall failure as a leader will be too noticeable so he keeps the crime situation as it is so he can hide behind it.

  6. concerned citizen says:

Way to go Prime Minister everything we do business wise has been put out to the public unlike the Last government{PUP}. We Belize was left in a desperate hole and we had to dig ourselves out and start fulling up again. Belizeans need to understand as much as u feel things aren’t getting done for you start by looking at the Education system where ur children are. Here it starts for our future things are happening but if u don’t listen to News and continue listen to Hooligans or hear so u will never understand…. Way to go UDP!!!!!

  7. another concerned citizen says:

Mr. Concerned Citizen. 3 years ago things were not as bad as they are right now. you need to know that mismanagement is what has caused belize to get into the hole it is right now. I think you are the one that needs to stop listen to hooligans. take off the blindfold and look at what is happening around. businesses are closing and we are not moving forward but backwards with this present government. stop to be fanatics of a party and realize that we need to put competent persons to manage this jewel. Really i agree that Mr. Barrow needs to put his resignation because up to now I haven’t seen no development ocurring under his ruling years. Way to go Belize!!!!!

  8. Worried citizen says:

There you go again Mr. Prime Minister! Let’s not stray from real issues affecting us. The celebrations are over now; your campaigning has been long over since 250 murders ago. It’s time to start working for love of this country. Things like cattle trading can be announced later when it’s actually materialized. Perhaps you believe that you are addressing a bunch of avid readers of the poorly circulated El Guardian newspaper. We need to hear more about the biggest problem our average citizen is facing: LACK OF BASIC SECURITY IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, High taxes’ unemployment, poor public health system, mediocre education system, poor conditions of the city streets, and death trap highways, etc.

  9. Proud says:

Maybe Mr. Barrow should be the first beef to go across to Mexico…and stay there.

  10. rod says:

news 5 the next poll should be how many people think that barrow should resignnnnnnn

  11. Proud Vegetarian says:

Mr. PM, It’s nice to know that we will be selling beef in the next 5 months or so, but please lets us know what plans you have to rectify our screwed up Justice System. The entire Police Force needs revamping. Stop shifting dirty/rogue cops from one department to the other and start holding them accountable for their actions. Better yet, stop promoting and extending their contracts beyond retirement age. Instead, try to equip the Police Force with technology we can all be proud of, and pay the Police Officers better for Pete’s sake, since you claim the economy has improved!

The Office of the DPP, under Ms. Cheryl Lynn Vidal has been proven to be non-functional: 7% conviction rate and she still gets promoted? I can only imagine what she will get if she manages to increase the conviction rate to a whopping 10%! Magistrates need to be investigated as to why they keep giving bail and lenient sentences to repeat offenders and hard core criminals? And please, the John Woods’ Retirement Facility is the biggest joke of our Justice system. For very obvious reasons, criminals don’t mind going back there over and over again. We really need to take back our Correctional Facility from Mr. Woods.

  12. Earl Grey says:

DON’T FORGET ………………HE SIGNED THE “POLITICIAN RECALL” LAW.

PEOPLE JUST NEED TO ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE……..

    and THROW THE BUMS OUT!!!!

  13. Proud says:

    Right on it Proud Vegetarian.

  14. egbert says:

Worried citizen tied it up in a nutshell .LOL
Citizens need to get organized and be more demanding of their elected officials whether udp or pup. Stop bitching and use your energy in getting organized so you may demand more from your elected officials.
United citizens can make or break any government or make them walk a straight line. Let your leaders (pup or udp) realize you can oust them with a simple vote of no confidence if they appear to be indifferent to any major problem plaguing the country.

It is almost impossible for any government to wipe out crime totally , but they could be very instrumental in minimizing crime.

As a free people you should be able to live your life in a civilized manner instead of living the life of scared birds in a cage.

  15. September to remember says:

Mr. Barrow, please! Future Beef trade? For more than 2 years, we had to endure a Useless Minister of Police. Finally you’ve made a BOLD move to remove Mr. Perdomo, and replaced him with a non elected Crony. You pay him handsomely, furnished him with an expensive, top of the line vehicle, and lined his pocket with benefits. And what have we gotten in return as the ones footing the bill? Four months of inaction and hence, the BLODDIEST SEPTEMBER in history!

It’s been a bad year for 8 YEAR olds: (Eyannie, and Marquis, RIP) and of course the brave little 8 year old Jenae who has been maimed due to gun violence. There has been: NO ARREST, NO PROPER INVESTIGATION, and CERTAINLY NO JUSTICE FOR ANY OF THESE KIDS!
It’s been a bad SEPTEMBER for 5 teenagers: A 14 yr old who was killed with his parents on a farm in Carmelita, two more were killed on another farm in OW, one 17 yr old killed in Lord’s Bank/Ladyville area a few days ago, and the other teenager whose body was found under a half constructed house in the Lake Independence area.

  17. Anti-Racism in Belize says:

It is clear to me the agenda here. Along with the censorship you know what I mean by that. Belizeans are easily excitable because they are ill informed. Nowhere on this planet when governments make agreements does it occur overnight, unless it’s an emergency situation. These things usually have a time frame of up to 18months. If, he said immediately I am sure he did not mean the next day. But knowing the way his people take things so literally he shouldn’t have been so careless. If anything he’s guilty of being over zealous and so looked as though he embellished the information.

The comments about the treacherous roads/streets, schools and public health systems are all very valid points. How about having these Billionaire investors adopting a school, hospital wing or a street /or sections of the highways, and they get to have their name tag to these investments.
Our civic centre needs repairs/rebuilding – we bid for the private sector to pay for the construction. Belizeans we need to start thinking outside the box, we have a very insular mentality.

Perhaps by doing this piece of homework you would have done a bit more and conducted a piece of comparative research which would have made you realised that these things don’t happen overnight anywhere. But I guess its sensationalism you’re after and so why would you want to report it in any other way? Talking down Belize and whipping up frenzy is what works for you. Sadly for us, the whole world has access to this information and so anyone outside would be forgiven for thinking we are a bunch of vindictive, gun toting, savage, who find extreme pleasure in nothing else. You think other countries don’t have the same social ills we experience in Belize? We are probably the only nation that organise our news and reporting around crime. Sure report crime in the news but it doesn’t need to be our main focus everyday. Those of you who have lived abroad in Chicago, New York, and other parts of the world knows what I am talking about. Even when the PM tries to bring some positive news even if its in the future you still look for the negative spin to the story.

Also, If the Great USA is running unemployment 10% of their work force, what makes you think that Belize would not be affected? So when PUP was in office three years ago, life was not difficult because a lot of you were benefitting from your people in the US in full time employment.

Tell me what industry we have in Belize besides tourism? With the daily negative reporting and comments some of you will start seeing the effects of that too.

  18. rod says:

    resign barrow resignnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  19. bruce says:

Oh yea what about the oil discovery what was that? about 6 MONTHS after the fact?!?!?!?!?!?

THat is no big deal correct??????????????????

  20. Anti-Racism in Belize says:

Egbert and Worried Belizeans, very valid points, good comments, yes by all means highlight the problems, so we can make Belize a better place to live and for people to want to visit us. Its far better to read than the daily one liner …… from the usual suspects. It grinds you down in the end, it as though Belize is hell on earth. We in Belize have far more to be grateful for than we realise. I think about Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, DRC, Zimbabwe, Haiti, China, Ciudad Juarez, Palestine,Bangladesh, Pakistan and Indian. Need I say more? In fact we have a lot of these people right here in Belize. Lets here some other activities going on in Belize. Surely there must be other things. All our youths are not gang bangers, all our teen girls are running the street getting pregnant for unknown fathers, all our men aren’t paedophiles, all our mothers are not single mothers, all our single mothers are not feckless, lazy women and all the men out here are not women beaters.

You’ve heard about self fulfilling prophecy, lets try to be positive by changing our selves for the better. The best change comes from within.

  21. September to remember says:

“Anti-Racism in Belize” what planet are you living on? Do you seriously think that the Tourism Industry in Belize will be less negatively affected by the crimes if the media houses downplay the broad daylight slaying and other heinous acts like those committed against our minors, teenagers, and elderly citizens?

You must be living in a different Belize from the rest of us, because just about EVERYONE IN BELIZE HAS BEEN TOUCHED DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY BY THESE OUT OF CONTROL CRIMES IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. The sad reality exists, even if you avoid crossing the bridge to the Southside of the city or switch your TV channel when the crime news is on.

Who feels it knows it and those of us living in what was once a precious Jewel cannot pretend to be happy to hear about “Future Beef Trading” in what is one of the bloodiest month in our history! And from no less than the person who need start doing the job of a Leader in order to change this sad reality. PUBLIC SAFETY IS THE RESPOSIBILITY OF THE GOVERNMENT, WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT! Try to remember that the next time you’re at your social event sipping Champaign with your well pampered crony friends!

  22. Jose Guerra SR says:

MR. PM it is nice to know that you have a dream to some day see improvement in Belize, especially for Belize to start export BEEF. But Pm you being the PM should know better that trying to sell a dream worst with haveing your facts up to date is not right with all due respect Mr Barrow the only BEEF you will export to mexico as i can understand and see is the great TECATE SALVADOR FERNANDEZ (MR BEEF) . Our due you want to beat MR MONTERO to it before he beat the government OOOOOPPPPPSSSS wrong he is the minister of agriculture aint he. By the way whats going on with all the crime in Belize, worst the prison didnt you promise to take back the prison Mr woods is a nice guy but is getting too rich from that prison, he has no respect for human being in the prison but like theold creol frase say” EVERY FAT FOUL HAVE THIR SUNDAY” Nuff respect the guerra’s in texas

  23. central farm says:

Three weeks ago i sold 2 bulls, got 85 cents per pound when 4-5 years ago, i could have gotten $1.05 or so a pound. I was waiting for the mexican market to materialize and have been waiting for 2 years, and again i hear from the PM that it is now possible. We should be given a date for the first shipment to be made as i am now getting tired of hearing that it is coming or is noiw possible but not one head of cattle, or not one slaughtered animal has left Belize for Mexico

  24. belizean voter says:

True true. Any patriotic belizean with the passion for a better country will look beyond party politricks and stick to the issues. Barrow above all has been a failure as a leader. point blank. When they swept into office the economy was already going down, why take up the risks and jump into an ocean of never-ending legal battles with companies worth more than our national debth.! The war for btl with the ashcroft group is far from over, so why put a value on it and put it up for sale when we don’t even know if ashcroft will accept his payment after Oct.15. That’s something the courts will decide so now we re selling it without even knowing if taxpayers will foot the bill if we re underselling it. Next when will PUC pay BEL their $600,000 for the case they lost to them the other day!! Channel 5 weh unno de wit dis cause channel 7 wa definitely shet up bout this! What about the pending case on the Rate increase review for BEL, didn’t the judge ask PUC’s independent expert 16 questions about the rate increase and the expert testified that PUC was wrong in all 16 questions on their decision to deny BEL a rate increase? If this is so then who do you think will foot the bill for the losses BEL suffered? And who do you think will pay their lawyers for cost of court plus GOB’s lawyers? Next why has Barrow allowed his deputy Vega to purchase such a luxurious Lexus when he lost the krooman lagoon case? Or better yet for the taking away of so many belizeans properties, Juss becazz dem da pup.. is he awarding his deputy for being vindictive, for the violation of Belizeans natural right to own properties in their country? Why hasn’t he gone for the acres of pristine cayes anwar is trying to get $12,000,000 for? That could take us far in clearing the legal costs his daddy put us in. Well it gets even better, cause that won’t seem to happen as anwar was awarded directorship in BTL. So everytime your drains flood, and every time you drop in a pothole and everytime you pay higher taxes ask yourself …was it worth it voting UDP? I for one, will never vote UDP again!!!!

  25. Foreign eyes says:

I am a foreigner and I happen to be visiting your beautiful country a few years ago during elections.
I talked to many people and it seemed to me that the country was not united. There hardcore PUP fanatics and hard UDP fanatics. I am sure that there were reasons for choosing one party over another but I was unable to determine what that would have been. People were voting for a party because their family and friends were and not based on the value brought to the table by the elected parties. It sad to see this because Belize is becoming a very popular tourist destination which puts you on the world stage.
It would seem to me that if your government committed to cleaning up the streets and deal with the people in a fair and just matter, the people would stand behind them. Perhaps have your tourism department promote other parts of your beautiful country to bring in more foreign dollars and create more jobs and lighten the tax burden on the people. Furthermore, what happened with all the oil? I would have assumed that there would have been lots of money to lighten the tax burden.
My friend and I had the good fortune to meet with one of your ministers at the time names John Briceño. The man seemed to be for the people and not for himself. He was pationate for his country. I mentioned his name to many people as we traveled the country and he had a great reputation. I am certain that there are many more people such as this. These people could unit the country and give you real victories and real things to celebrate.
I look forward to visiting again.

  26. Augustus says:

@Foreign Eyes… Briceno himself does not GENERALLY have a bad political reputation. He is known for an ability to work well with people. People in Orange Walk will show up to his house at all hours of the night and he does not turn them away. However, people might think he lacks the extra “gumption” needed in a Prime Minister. Some have said he is the perfect deputy, friendly, accommodating and loyal. However, his party, the PUP is known for being run by a monied oligarchy who are out of touch with Belizeans, and are deceitful. On the other hand, the UDP is known for having arrogant and impetuous members who use their time in power to carry out vendettas against those who are not on their side. PUP is known for having wealthy cronies who benefit from the PUP government, often at the cost of the people, yet UDPs are known for being associated with other wealthy people of ill-repute, such as drug dealers. Which is better or worse? You make the call.

  27. Anti-Racism in Belize says:

Foreign eyes: Your comments are welcomed. Sometimes fresh eyes see far more than those involved in a situation. Sadly, I am not sure how much notice will be taken of your views, as they are currently embroiled in intense mud slinging. I mean you and your friends could literally come in the country and declare you’ve taken over and they wouldn’t notice because they fighting over the telecommunication and who’s the LORD best friend and on his payroll. Forget the oil, the telecom seems more valuable right now:-).

These guys have no shame, in the meantime just as you saw with the election the people spend their time deciding which side they on. Similarly, if you asked them why they’ll have the most feeble excuses why they have sided with one party and not the other. Forget manifestos, we vote based on our grandma/grandpa say so, otherwise you may lose family members because they would rather it be red or blue.

Well, I do hope you come back to visit Belize because we have a beautiful country but if only those in charge could value this. As for John Briceno, I am unsure and I believe in giving someone a fair chance. One of my reservations is that we have had too many of these guys family members in politics. Imagine you have Barack as President, then Michele, then Melia, then Sasha? The american people struggle with this issue with the Clinton’s even though it was some years apart. In Belize that is politics at its best and nobody question it. Quite Bizarre!
