Twenty year old Sherman Rodney, a resident of Gentle Lane in the Port Loyola area remains on remand at the Central Prison after being charged for the attempted murder of Rafael Usher on September twenty-third. Usher reported to police that at about eleven-forty-five p.m. last Thursday he was visiting a female friend on Arlington Drive and while standing on her verandah he was approached by Rodney who produced a nine millimeter handgun and let loose a hail of bullets at him. Fortunately Usher escaped the shooting unscathed and Belize City police managed to detain Rodney over the weekend. While Rodney was arraigned this morning in Magistrate’s Court his mother Florence Horne says the cops have the wrong man. Instead she is claiming that Rodney was with her and a few relatives gambling at the time of the shooting.

I think da mih ih nephew ih send gaan buy fi eat and ih come and get eena di gambling den, dih gambling game. So when ih staat win they staat to di jinx ah, mi neighbor and everybody staat to di jinx ah. And we didn’t even know that gunshot mih di go on ova investigate about it.”
Rodney, who has another case before the courts, will reappear on Tuesday to answer to a firearm charge that has also been brought against him.

If I’m wrong I apologize but for Christ sake mothers, at least once put yourself in another mother’s shoes & stop waiting for the day someone runs to your house to tell you that it was your son’s turn & you have to go to the morgue to identify his body. Let your children face the consequences when they make poor choices. Stop gambling & cook a —-ing meal & sit down with your children. You don’t even know who went to buy the food, whatever you are smoking you need to stop, it is making you stupid. Yes I’m being hard on you & giving it to you in street terms because there are a lot of good, productive people in the area & you are giving them a bad name.
Mark it down: if Mom is lying, she must be charged for perjury. Case by case, Belize has to fight its way back to justice. Right now the courts are a joke.
How many times have we seen cases where family members/mothers, etc make public fool of themselves for their criminal sons?
This is a very poor attempt to cover up for your son Florence; “he was at home me at the time of the shooting” does not cut it with me at all without any solid proof. I am here for a miracle, Florence; can’t you see one is needed here?
If this is the example we as mothers set for our children, it is no wonder our children has become just as hopeless as we are, as they walk off the path to their own destruction.

I am so sick and tired of these mothers who know their children are doing wrong and they just turn a blind eye. Her son dont have a chance at a decent life, she was gambling,and probably putting away some Belikin or Belize rum, how can a child respect a mother whose life is in the toilet. If the sons cannot respect the mother or father how will they respect other people. In some cases people are a product of their environment, this woman probably profit from her sons criminal activity, so she just turn a blind eye. She should be prosecuted for providing false statement to the police. It is time for law enforcemnt to get tough, show them legally who is boss. Please restore our country to the beautiful, peaceful place it used to be.

Is gambling not illegal in Belize? Did she just state that she and her son was gambling? Is she trying to have the charge against her son of attempted murder dropped to illegal gambling instead that is pretty slick hope the cops don’t buy into it, was the gun ever recovered for the sake of the case I hope so otherwise the cops are probably standing on nothing and another criminal goes loose. if they find the gun and tie him to it then they can kill two birds with one stone and charge her for the gambling and have both of them sent to jail at least they should play the gambling charge on her maybe she will lead them to the gun in order to drop that charge. Why don’t these parents step up to the plate before their children commit these crimes if they can do so to protect them then they can also do so in order to protect other parents children before these incidents occur.

She is not a “mother” indeed. They can’t find a job but have time to be gambling with her son. I glad to see the face that bore such a person. I always thought the media when reporting these incidents should say ” John Doe, son of Incompetent Mother and Missing-in-action Father”. Let the public know exactly who created such a disappointment to society. Maybe if the criminal child no have no shame for him/herself…….he would have for his failed parents. It only proves one thing yet again……..Parents are not doing there job! Then we want to know why the criminals think and do as they please……….it all start from HOME people. I recall as a teen coming home with a long story why I was late or didn’t do something. My Grandma or my mom would say: You think I born this size? or They would say: dah fool di talk but dah noh fool di listen. I recall feeling so humiliated as they saw right through the lies.
Those were old style parenting but they instilled discipline, respect for myself and for others and morals. The great majority of parents in Belize still do a wonderful job of raising their children. Sadly we only hear about these disjointed, dysfunctional parents. Where are the fathers? Also these criminals all seem to be products of teenage mothers, if this boy is 20 years old how old, how old is she? She doesn’t look even 40?
Or is it just because she’s had a stress free live by refraining from carrying out her parental duties. I really hope that she is telling the truth.
Mothers like Florence is the main reason why I do not blame the Politicians for all the foolishness taking place in the land. Looking at her photo on the net, Iam no Doctor but I can tell she is high………on something!!

I live in California for many years. Every time I read about a crimes that happened in Belize the court just gives little to none for their sentence, so what will be the next out come, they will do another crime because they know that the time is … (few month to couple of years). The system in Belize is just a slap on the arm. its need to get tuffer and the system need to bring back the death sentence, I bet things will be different. Peoples will always take up for their family member, but when get caught they deserve some time too as much. You did harm in the society you have to pay for it. If it not through the system, it will be nature. “What goes around comes around, What you live by you will died by”. Parent if you not your kids road model, some one else will be their road model for you be smart stupid. That’s why your kid do what they did because you not their for them, so some one influence them for you. Stop drinking, Stop smoking, Stop gambling, stop been noose. Pay more attention to your kids and you will see some different in their life.

Thank you. That was parenting at it’s best. Nowadays, they say its about the children human rights, and parents want to be their children friends. Yes I believe in protecting a child 100% because there are enough devious adults that would abuse children.
I can’t help but think these parents who neglect their children by sitting with them drinking, smoking and gambling are abusing their children also. In this case he is an adult, but she’s failed to help him to develop in to productive well adjusted adult. Look at her saying she gave a grown man age 20 years old money to go buy food off the streets.
All of them idle. Nobody want to cook a wholesome meal, and sit down and eat as a family. It cost more if everyone’s going out to buy food off the streets. If she’d just cook one big pot and everyone just help themselves. Family values, what family values? It sounds harsh but some people really don’t know these things. Come on Florence, let that boy be a man, and you get your act together. People make comments because we are so sick of seeing these things in our society. You all deserve a better life, but only you can make these changes.
When I was a child gambling was forbidden in our home, no one dared to come home with a deck of card. At twenty years old we were all ambitious and were going places. Thanks mom/dad.
