Murder number 100 for 2010
For a week, there have been no reported homicides in the mean streets of the city. That’s until this morning when the brief spell was broken at around six o’clock when gunshots rang out in the West Collet Canal area. Murder victim number one hundred for 2010 was recorded; a young vegetable vendor, Carlos Succuqui, was attacked and viciously shot as he prepared for the day ahead. The bullets ripped through his abdomen, back and left shoulder. He died within hours at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The incident would be one of three attacks for the day and the first of two on vegetable vendors. News Five Marion Ali visited with the family of the victim and files this report.

The victim’s uncle, Miguel Sucuqui, told News Five off camera that initially he heard they had beat his nephew, but when he reached the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, the news was worst than he anticipated.
Voice of: Miguel Sucuqui, Uncle of Murder Victim
“The doctor tell me, ih seh its multiple shot wounds. So I ask him if he could survive. Ih seh ih deh ina surgery, but I wait bout twenty minutes, fifteen minutes outside. Afterwards I come in and they noh wahn give me no information and thing and I gone and then I come back. And they tell mi he pass.”
Sucuqui was reportedly setting up his produce to sell for the day when he was attacked. The police say a youth rode up beside Sucuqui and opened fire but it is not clear whether he was robbed. This is the second time that we have had to visit the family to talk about the loss of a loved one to gun violence.
On July twenty-seventh, Carlos’ older brother, Abel, was also killed by gun violence. They had all migrated from Guatemala in the early eighties and today Miguel Sucuqui told us that while the quality of life has generally improved since coming to Belize, it has come at a high price.
Miguel Sucuqui
“The first time my nephew ih mi had work and he get kill because they mi wah thief ah the money. That dah fi we style Spanish over yah. We work haad and deh kill we. That dah how I understand it.”
Marion Ali
“Nothing has come out of that murder as well?”
Miguel Sucuqui
“No, as far as we know, no I don’t know. I noh know nothing about that because my nephew gone to god and god wahn tek judge to the one who do it . We leave it under his hands and he control weh yoh do bad.”
“Let me ask you this. Your family migrated to Belize some years ago and two of your family members have been lost to gun violence and street crime. Do you regret now that you moved from Guatemala to come live here because of what has happened?”
Miguel Sucuqui
“I noh regret nothing from the country from Belize. It’s a nice country to live it’s a good country to help each other from Belizean to each other. But even if I not from this country, I guess Belizean regret fi dat crime weh we have, ih have to change.”
Police are still trying to close in on the man who is responsible for this latest killing. Marion Ali for News Five.
Carlos Sucuqui had been selling vegetables since he was twelve years old.
Shame. Shame. Shame.
see they always the kill the hardworking mayan people barrow you better bring back the hanging penalty this guy who do this must hang we the belizeans no wa put up no more with these murders and y better no get off if not we the people wa take care of him we self and then you will be put on a plane to miami in a you pejamas. no more barrow no moreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
It’s not going to get better until we get this lame duck Government out. It’s obvious that they are not going to do anything to decrease the crime rate in the jewel.
It’s time to start killing these ruthless mother ……., chop their …. off, skin them alive and chop off their ……. head. Dats what …….. barrow needs to do. Only dis way we can bring back our country from the …. hole we are in.
CRIME IS SO OUT OF CONTROL IN BELIZE IT IS UNBELIEVABLE… GOSH, WHEN WILL SOMEONE PUT A HARD HAND ON JUSTICE AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AND MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF CRIMINALS, YOU COMMIT THE CRIME, YOU PAY THE TIME, OR HEY PUNISH THEM THE SAME WAY THEY PUNISH THE INNOCENT. I DON’T THINK MERCY SHOULD BE EVEN A QUESTION WITH THESE CRIMINALS. BUT TAKING THE CRIMINALS TO JUSTICE JUST TO LET THEM GO A YEAR LATER MAKES NO SENSE TO ME… MAKE THEM PAY THE TIME. GOVERNMENT IN BELIZE SUCKS!!! NO MATTER UDP OR PUP, BOTH SUCK, THEY DON’T CARE FOR THE PEOPLE JUST THEIR POCKETS, AND THIS LEAVES THE BELIEZEAN PEOPLE SUFFERING.
thats what i always say. BELIZEANS lets start and have justice on our won the F*** government will never be better. kill them. and start doing justice on our own. stop talking and do actions as the government says in his speeches.
Shame indeed, Emily. I must concur with you Elgin…this government has done NADA
This is a sad event. this young man is an honest person and sells his fruits and veges everyday. works very hard for little money and they just come to rob him and kill him. i am afraid to walk the streets with jewelry, with my purse, with bags in my hands because the crime has gotten so out of hand. The police, the government … no one is doing NOTHING!. we are getting worse everyday.
they don’t want to work, they just was to steal from ppl.
A LIAR IS A THIEF, AND A THIEF IS A KILLER.
So the real question is HOW do you WAKE UP the government. They seem to think crime will not reach them, they are too busy taking money for themselves. They take and take the money that all the rest of us hard working Belizeans pay in every month. But WHAT IF we stopped paying…not pay any taxes…all of us Belizeans together…What if we send THAT message to them? Will that be the WAKE UP call the government needs? Some time ago in San Pedro, this idea was considered and given serious thought, perhaps its not such a bad idea. I really hope the elected ministers read this to see how DESPERATE the hard working Belizean people are…
This is a very unfortunate situation. Its the hardworking people loosing their lives out there. I feel sorry for the belizean people. It’s bad n its gonna get worse.
Don’t be surprised that some Guatemala hitmen come Belize City and eliminate some of these good for nothing thugs that chanced this young, hard working man of his life for no reason.
We the Belizean people are been held hostage in our own country as a result of this incompitent Government inability to deal with the crime situation.A hard working Belizean can’t even sell his produce on the street corner without been murderd by some cold blooded idiot who refuse to work.
it’s embarrasing to see the gov. not trying to stop these crimes that is killing the working people. i think that before we kick his candy @$$ we should ask the p.u.p leader johnny if he wins, we’ll he bring back the death penalty or will he stand by and look as we the humble people die like chicken in the hands of these criminals. Please johnny tell us what your plans are, if you win next election since we don’t want a p.m like barrow again. bring it on johnny your next to be p.m 100% but don’t you ever think of betraying us like barrow.
Belizean society has a series of serious problems…corrupt leadership at all levels of governance, poverty, crime, and deficient education, they are all interconnected. Nothing is going to get better if these issues are not addressed simultanously. The poor always suffer the most. I never thought I’d hear the day where streets of Belize would be referred to as “mean”. This situation is complex. God help you.
It is sad, that these criminals kill to get a few dollars from street vendors and hard working people. I am sure if he had asked for the money the man would have given it to him. Judas I hope you go HANG YOURSELF. Sorry for your loss brothers.
Revolution is coming…..hope is coming…but war must come first…my Belizean people…we need to stand up start getting prepared….we need to stand up for justice in our own country….start lynching these …… criminals….they just killing our hard working citizen…until when will this continue and realize its happening in our own back yard….until they target one of your own family member or yourself!????
THERE IS ALSO AN UNHEALTHY SITUATION AT THE USPS POSTAL SERVICES IN BELIZE.
LEAVE IT TO YOUR CONSCIENCE..IF YOU HAVE ANY! WISH PENNER KNEW MORE ABOUT HIS MINISTRY. SHAME BELIZE, SHAME!
said it yesterday and saying it today….. “Poor man hav fu eat” right Mose…….
Then … Poor man hav fu make porn videos also right Mose???
This was a poor man trying to make a living … working the land….. trying to eat honestly….
and see what he got… a barrage of bullets….
What the killers get when caught…..??? some free food and accomodations at Kolbe and then a free ticket to kill again with a Nolle Prosequi…… courtesy of Dickie….
Let alll of us law abiding citizens look after each other….. dont expect ANY GOB to do it for us!!!
And let’s hunt down these killers when the opportunity arises….
It is really appalling how a hardworking young man selling since the age of 12 can be killed in cold blood for a few dollars! I am sorry people but this is the worse Belize city has been and the UDP Government is impotent to stop crime. Dough Singh is a joke and all Barrow does is pass legislation which is simply a bandaid on the real problem! Meanwhile all “Boots”, “Gapi” and the others do is hustle……we are living in bad bad times people! Thugs everywhere on the streets and in parliament. These are bad times indeed.
Seeing the children march for peace today is heartrencing. The echoes from their little voices are screaming to stop the violence!! Mein!! The betterment of this country is for them!!! They are the ones that need the help of everyone to bring this country for them. Something drastic has to happen for this country to get serious. I wonder if our Prime Minister is killed what would happen!!! I wonder!!!
come on ppl, this madness has got to stop.
i hope that we are hitting rock bottom cause then the only was to go will be up.
sad, very sad. and i know the situation all too well; my brother was a victim of this senselessness 3 years ago.
so so so sad mains…..crime is increasing and what is being done? Nothing absolutely nothing every one is in for the nice ride and bag it all fi them selves ruthless heartless souls.
