Card carrying prison guards ambushed; Miriam Gillett murdered

Less than twenty-four hours before, there was a deadly assault on three prison employees while on their way home from work on Friday night.  They were ambushed in a taxi near Hattieville with what is believed to be a high powered assault rifle. Miriam Gillett was killed on the spot; the two others are in critical condition. Family and friends are desperately searching for answers but it is believed that Gillett was not the intended.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

The bullet riddled vehicle in which the three corrections officers were traveling in had crashed violently into a lamppost ten feet off the highway; their bodies bleeding profusely from several bullet wounds.  Thirty-two year old Miriam Gillett, a resident of Iguana Street had just hitched a ride with her colleagues, thirty-five year old Ernest Savery and thirty-two year old Sylvino Cal and was traveling along the Boom/Hattieville Road when they came under attack by unknown gunmen who waited for their vehicle to approach a nearby speed bump.  What happened next, as some residents describe it, sent them scrambling for cover inside their homes.  The chatter of gunfire echoed shortly before eight o’clock as the gold Ford Escort neared the Hattieville cemetery.  When it subsided the three occupants remained trapped inside with various degrees of injuries.  Gillett’s sister who wished to remain anonymous told News Five she received a visit from prison officials who informed her of what took place.

Voice of: Sister of Miriam Gillett

“From I saw the vehicle I done know maybe it’s my sister involved and the CEO come and called me and my father and told me that if I’m Miriam’s sister and I told him yes and this is her father and she said Miriam was involved in a shooting while getting a straight ride home and she confirmed her presumed dead on the spot.”

Gillett, who had been working with the Kolbe Foundation, was hit in the head and died on the spot.  A resident of the area who admitted to hearing the volley of shots initially thought nothing of it because a firing range is situated some two to four hundred yards away from where the shooting happened.  It wasn’t until a half hour later when he went to the front of his house that he noticed that a vehicle had careened off the road and crashed into a nearby lamppost.  When he approached closer he heard two voices crying out for help.

Isani Cayetano

“The shooting incident that claimed the life of prison officer Miriam Gillett, a mother of two, was among the many violent crimes over the weekend across the country.  Miriam was en route to Belize City along with two other prison employees when they were ambushed and assaulted with heavy gunfire.”

A number of expended 5.56 caliber rounds that littered the highway were said to be picked up from the area after the shooting indicating that the weapon used may have been an M16 assault rifle.  Earlier that day Miriam’s sister had a premonition that something terrible was going to happen.

Miriam Gillett

Voice of: Sister of Miriam Gillett

“In the morning when got up I saw her, I hear her downstairs in the house and she never left yet so I asked her “how you noh gaan da work yet?” Ih say directly but I never see her.  She mih eena bathroom di bathe and I just gone cause dah di same time when I come down nine fu reach my work.”

Isani Cayetano

“How long had she been working at the prison?”

Voice of: Sister of Miriam Gillett

“Bout at least gwein fi one and a half years.”

Isani Cayetano

“Did she ever speak with you about her experiences here at work, whether or not the people she worked with had any kind of misunderstanding with anybody else or that type of thing?”

Voice of: Sister of Miriam Gillett

“Nothing. No. Nothing.  All I could say ih just, maybe at the wrong place at the wrong time you know.”

And while Gillett and Cal may have been victims of circumstance it is believed that Ernest Savery, a former inmate who was incarcerated for the 2002 murder of sixty-three year old Justo Jairo Perez in San Pedro Town, was the intended target.  According to Miriam’s father, Elston Gillett, it was unusual for his daughter to catch a ride with someone else to return to the city after work.

Elston Gillett, Father of Miriam Gillett

Elston Gillett

“They usually have a bus weh dehn come down eena you sih; come down eena di prison bus. I noh know what kinda ride she ketch that night. She neva live wid me, yo undastand, she already have her husband, common-law, and em he live to the back.  Sometime I noh even know when she come home you know.”

It is a grisly homicide, one that has left all three families in a state of confusion.  Gillett’s sister says that while police are investigating they remain tightlipped about their findings.

Voice of: Sister of Miriam Gillett

“Nobody come tell us nothing.  All weh we do, me, my two cousin we came to Hattieville Police Station.  We saw the vehicle weh she mih eena.  I sih weh she mih di sit down, the blood, that’s it.  We noh get no feedback if dehn ketch di person or if dehn find gun, nothing.”

Kolbe Foundation C.E.O., Earl Jones, told News Five today that they are cooperating with police investigations.  Today at the Central Prison Miriam Gillett was remembered by her peers.  The foundation has since mandated that all officers must travel to their final destinations in the prison bus until it can be determined that the calculated hit wasn’t an attack on prison officers in general. Reporting for News Five, Isani Cayetano.

Something is clearly wrong with Belize. Do not say it is the government or the opposition. It is the people of Belize who really have to look at themselves and stop blaming politicians for these senseless murders and crimes, Each year there are more killings so do not say it is the government or opposition’s fault it is thefault of Belizeans who like to complain about police and law and order. We like to complain when we are the very ones doing the crimes and it is very sad.

  2. corf says:

I don’t know whats wrong with my Belizean people. How can they hire someone like Ernest Savery at Kolbe Foundation as a prison officer? That guy have a rap sheet a mile long and once upon a time was a dirty cop. In the mid to late 1990’s, he was constantly in the news for some bad deed or another and as usual, its always the innocent that gets hurt or killed. At least half of his family members are a menace to society including his mother that use to get on tv and swear for him and run go bail him out everytime he does something wrong. She also once took a bullet that was meant for either him or his brother Eric Savery. I never wish death on anyone but he should’ve been the one to lose his life instead of that innocent lady..God bless her and her family.

Corf, how right you are – “Ernest Savery, a former inmate who was incarcerated for the 2002 murder” – how long do you get for murder nowadays, obviously not long, then you come out “rehabilitated” and get a job guarding those who you were in jail with. Do you not need to get a “Police Record” (LOL) when applying for a job as Prison Warden? Obviously not.
Sincere condolence to the the family of Miriam Gillet

I agree with you Rod, this prime minister is just having a fine time, vacationing, going here there and every where with our money. Maybe he will do something when he looses one of his own love ones to crime (GANG VIOLENCE). This is total madness…..forget the human rights, hang these c@@k suckers every time you read the news, it’s nothing but murders u read about. These murderers have no place in our society.

Mr Prime Minister, the same way you confiscated B.T.L from Aschroft the same way you can bring in the death penalty. Your nation is crying to you to do something very quick, don’t you see we are loosing our nation? PUT THE DEATH PENALTY INTO LAW NOW BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE, don’t wait until our country get like El Salvador, or Honduras, where the gangs have taken over the country entirely. Right now those countries are fighting a loosing battle to crime, an you ask yourself why….because they didn’t take the drastic measures necessary to put order in the country. Mr. Prime Minister, don’t let that happen to this beautiful jewel we call Belize.

Police need to quit sleeping on the job and do something about the crime situation..they know exactly whats happening and whose responsible..& if they dont know..they’re a bunch of idiots bcaz the streets is ringing..even kids as old as 7 know whats happening!!!

  14. Obzervor says:

The phenomenon of crime may not solely be blamed on politics; but I must say that many politicians exploit these incidences for their own political gain. They do not speak out in unison; rather they point fingers at each other. They themselves many times disregard or manipulate the laws for their own financial gain. When those at the top exhibit disdain and contempt for the very laws they are supposed to protect, what moral authority do they then have to speak out against others who behave just like them?

Folks- learn this: real leaders do not campaign. Real leaders do not engage in smear tactics. Real leaders are active doing what is supposed to be done. With leadership comes great responsibility. Knowledgeable people know this. And if such a knowledgeable person has personal integrity, then that person refrains from seeking such an enormous responsibility, and would accept it only under the appropriate circumstances.

  15. macal rivera says:

rod you dah one jackass without tail, cause if you di blame this government then you no need to go to a mental ward, you need to go to hell because you and i know damm well dat dah the previous govern ment started all the …. weh di happen in belize right now, so please check your head before you past any comments that make you look like a FOOL FOOL OK

  16. RadicalBelizean says:

My condolences to the Gillett and Cal families, and I hope we get justice for you.

macal rivera, I have to join you with that, Rod is deliberately making these silly comments.

He does so on a regular basis, sadly he doesn’t know when to abandon this act and show respect to people who have lost their families. He takes every opportunity on any news item and link it with the PM, how sad. He is lucky we have Dean Oliver Barrow as the PM and not Robert Mugabe and then these people would see what a dictator’s next move would be.

  17. Claudette Belisle says:

Hi I am sad about the death of my sister and she will be sadly missed but joyfully remembered. I want every one to take a moment and realise that in the blink of an eye things can happen to change the whole course of your life this is one of the reasons why we as a people should come together and try to come up with a solution to this problem we are having in our country dont point fingers find solutions this is getting worse this behaviour needs to stop its depressing Belize is too small .we as a people Needs to turn to GOD without GOD life is impossible parents send your kids to sunday school instill values in them that when they grow up they learn to rispect others as well as themselves .GOD BLESS U ALL AND REMEMBER GOD IS LOVE ALWAYS.

Many thanks 4 the above NINA.

Bad judgment on Kolbe’s part for hiring this Savery Guy, he has a long record or involvement in murder(s), gang violence, corruption as a police officer, drug dealing etc… Sounds like another hustle to me.

A prayer for the lady that lost her life.

This is so sad I knew her when I was going to holy redeemer primary school we were on the same softball team and my heart goes out to her family , she is the second person that I know from school that died the second person that I know when I was going to Gwen Lizarraga High school was also an innocent person who they killed when he was buying food. Its heart wrenching to see that innocent people are dying and when I went home to Belize for vacation this year, almost everyday you hear gunshots. Its time for people to realize that life is too short and instead of killing each other start your life on the right path, go to school and work hard whats the sense of having a death rise toll for innocent people? people want to show that they bad and make their mark on society for reputation, this is silly because eventually when you live a fast pace life and by the gun you die within a short period of time and you die by the gun. People wake up and respect yourself, the elders and the children of our future.
