American fugitive gets a tan and handcuffs on La Isla Bonita

Ricardo Caveras

An American fugitive was arrested in San Pedro on October eighteenth. According to our friends at AmbergrisDaily.com, Ricardo Caveras was arrested during a joint operation between the San Pedro Police Department and the security officer from the U.S. Embassy.  Apparently, Caveras has different arrests warrants pending in the United States under different aliases.  While using the name Richard D. Cover Jr., Caveras has racked up warrants for parole violation, security fraud and other fraud related cases. Prior to coming to San Pedro, Caveras lived in Panama and Costa Rica under different aliases including R.J. Erwin.  Caveras has only been living in Belize for one year, and it seems that he has been quite busy.  He found a job as Property Manager and as General Manager for Coldwell Banker Real Estate on Ambergris Caye. He may have added one more crime to his list, and the latest one is for bigamy.  Apparently Caveras, in twelve months, has fallen in love, gotten married and became a father while he is still married to a woman in the U.S. with whom he has four children, including triplets. Caveras also claims to be a Belizean Citizen who was born in Orange Walk. But Pennsylvania police say his mother has never visited Belize.

Belizeans are denied oppurtunity to work but they willingly give the American man a job! This is what you get when you don’t do background checks!

  2. rod says:

  3. rootsman says:

Shame on Coldwell Banker for hiring this fugitive criminal I know it’s not like they cannot find a local that can do the job.

  4. Common Sense says:

Looks to be a problem in San Pedro – there has been quite a few fugitives from the USA working as real estate agents on the Island. If your white, have the gift of confidence of bulls%$t talk, you can work on San Pedro! Or at least that seems to be the impression.

  5. OPEN UR EYES BELIZE says:

SHAME OF BELIZEANS HIRING FUGITIVE CRIMINALS WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT KIND OF WHITE TRASH THEY ARE! U KNOW BELIZEANS ARE DISCRIMINATED IN THE US AND TREATED LIKE UNWANTED PEOPLE. SO DO THE SAME TO THEM!!! ONE ADVICE TO ALL THOSE HIRING AMERICANS PLEASE DO A BACKGROUND CHECK, IMMIGRATION STATUS CHECK, AND CROSS CHECK WITH THE EMBASSY BECAUSE MOSTOF THESE GUYS LOVE BELIZE COZ WE DONT DO ANYTHING LIKE DAT. COME BELIZE THEY DO THAT TO OUR FELLOW BELIZEANS HERE IN THE US SO DO THE SAME!!!!

  6. RealRootsMan says:

It’s a shame to say that Coldwell Banker Is the Only Real Estate Company to Hire five Belizean Realtors…In San Pedro…How much Belizeans work at the ” other” real estate companies???…And I guess Ricardo, ” the fugitive criminal” was even More Intelligent in Eluding All others….Guess who made him get caught??…I agree that we do not need people who ” prey” on others in OUR country…

  7. Paul says:

Seems that when your white its all right here in Belize, if your black or crufi everybody thinks your a criminal or crack head. However its seems as if its the other way around.

  8. concerned mother says:

I Agree with JC, It is a sad fact that Belizeans are being discriminated in their own country. The majority of Real Estate Companies in San Pedro are owned, managed and run by foreigners. Coldwell Banker not being the exeption. Belizeans get the low paid job positions. It is also another sad fact that there are well connected “Residents” who make a fine living, selling work permits, residencies etc…to foreigners. Government along with Immigration should take a good look into this situation and put a stop on this situation once and for all.

  9. JC says:

There is nothing wrong with Americans or foreigners for that matter working in our country but it seems like its a regular occurrence that they are fugitives. We need to screen them more thoroughly and do proper investigations before giving them jobs.

  10. JC says:

The above JC is a different JC from the first comment posted

  11. Belive it says:

You are All Correct…….The Real Estate Business is run by Foreigners, mainly white Americans and Canadians….They come over, get a work permit usually through the Real Estate Broker as an Agent…or they buy one through other white residents who know contacts in Belmopan……YES…Our own people in Belmopan and Government sell us out! These white folks only want to hire and work with their own kind. Most of them got very wealthy from selling Belizean lands. They usually send the money out of the country and give back little or nothing to the community. They are greedy and want to keep the pie for themselves…..they have some nerves, They don’t like competition and try to shut down anyone else who trys to start a real estate company Especially local Belizeans. They have some nerves. Immigration and Police are always rounding up Illegal Aliens BUT these Ailens are usually only Hispanics from Guatemala, Honduras or El Salavador who usually work illegally for the white people as maids, construction or labourer. The Immigration and Police needs to round up whites also…… the law should be the same for all. We continue to get svrewed by our own people in our own country….shame shame shame.

  12. ZOE says:

I am curious, did this guy have legal documents to substantiate his Belizean Citizenship or nationality? If he does, then this should be investigaged! Where he get it? Who sold it to him? CORRUPTION ONCE MORE!

  13. Sanpedrano with a heart says:

Like this fugitive there are too many foreigners including Americans working illegally in San Pedro denying intelligent Belizeans the opportunity to do these jobs, I mean in bars, restaurants, real estate, web designing, photography, guiding, and the list goes on. They should all be required to have a work permit, but who will check. Then only when there is no local available should they be given the permit, not sold as it seems to be the practice.

  14. DISILLUSIONED says:

Our own home grown, Aracei Cahueque, Brandon Budna, Jason Anderson & Darren Banner, make this dude looks like an angel! Honestly, there are many Belizeans living and working in the US, so we should’t criticize the hiring of foreigners in Belize.

  15. Common Sense says:

San Pedro is American, and has been so for at least 15 years, many believe longer. Anything is possible there as long as you have the cash in hand to speed things up – and sadly, Belizeans and San Pedranos in authority seem ready to accept.

Need a work permit? Permanent residency? Gun license? Illegal underage immigrants to work in your “bar”? Environmental clearance?

How about a hotel room? Drink in a nice bar or meal at a restaurant? Trip to the reef to snorkel or dive? Groceries?

Most of these items are furnished to tourists and locals by American owned businesses. Many love Belize and improve the Caye – employ Belizeans, and treat and pay well. Many are here to make money that does not even touch a bank account in Belize, content trying to keep the “natives” from walking the beach or blocking access to piers.

This guy is another example of the bad side of San Pedro, hopefully this publicity might well straighten up things over there. But as long as there is someone with cash, and an official with a desire for the “big time” lifestyle, sadly will continue.

    Belive it – spot on!

  16. belize says:

I think that the government should make an investigation on al the real estate companies to check all of the white people if they have work permits to be working on this country and i ask the government to stop giving work permits! they are destroying our people our country in the future we will only see white people working in our country and belizeans will be like servants lets stand up belizeans fight for our rights fight for our country like our anccestors did

He is still scamming now in March 2018. He is remarried with two additional kids and lives in Levittown Pa. Owns a business called Pro-Home renovators. How many scams do these people have to commit before they are in jail for a good 20-30 years.
