Second man charged for double murder of Richard and Maria Stuart

Forty-three year old Richard and Maria Stuart were brutally stabbed countless times inside their home almost one week ago. An employee of the Stuarts, Milton Darinel Maza was charged with the double murder on Tuesday. He was found with the Stuarts Toyota Scion SUV in St. Matthew’s Village where he lives. There were scratches that were visible on him when he appeared in court. Video evidence shows two persons exiting the Stuart’s home after the brutal murders and on Thursday police detained a second suspect, who they believe was Maza’s accomplice. This afternoon before Magistrate Dorothy Flowers, thirty- three year old Eli Lopez Avila, a Honduran National was also charged with the double homicide of the Stuarts. Avila, who speaks mainly Spanish and also lives in St. Matthews Village, claimed to be a farmer.

With the aid of an interpreter, Avila told the judge that he has been living in Belize for six years. Other than the questions that were asked of him, Avila remained silent. According to our court reporter, the barefoot man very frightened when the charges were read. One piece of evidence that is sure to count against him at trial, is that he was found with a laptop that belonged to the Stuart family and was missing from the house after the murder. Avila’s next court appearance is scheduled for November twenty-third. Richard and Maria Stuart will be laid to rest this Saturday in Santa Elena following a church service at St John’s Cathedral in Belize City.

I am very pleased that a quick arrest has been made in this case. Richard is a childhood friend of mine in the neighborhood I grew up in more than 20 years ago in Belize City. My condolences to the families of both Richard & Maria especially their 4 minor children left orphaned by such a senseless crime.

It’s a dam shame,how now illegal’s are also entering our country killing at will.What ever my fellow belizeans think of this couple,they have educated their selves,and lived a productive life.Very sad of their lost,and the lost their young children has to deal with,not having a mother or father to nurture them.I sure do hope they are met with the same faith in prison,this should be done for our people,sending a clear message dont come to belize and @–$ with our people.
I always say our borders are really artificial, cause in our country from way back when the old george price allow the refugees to just come in our country and make themselves at home thing just change, crime increased, cause they brought in their cultures and way of living, and when it come to this type of murders it started with them. I wonder if their is a possibilty we can send them back, even when it comes to americans, these rapist, child abusers and murderes just come in our country and think they can get away, in fact some of these aliens even live better than belizeans!!!

well I hope they will hang them while they are in jail or I suppose someone will be doing some justice, cause with the gruesome way how they had killed Mr. & Mrs Stuart, they need to payback. As for the boarder business, all the people who has power in government is the same ones who is doing it, have no doubt about it. Cause how can a small clerk or lower level officers able to pull it off?
