Most Outstanding CSEC Candidate is SJC’s Dorien Villafranco
Students from nineteen countries sat the Caribbean Secondary Education Certification exams (CSEC), also known as CXCs, earlier this year. The results are in and guess what? For the first time in the thirty-eight years of the exam, a Belizean student has been named the Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in the Region. He is Dorien Villafranco of St. John’s High who is now enrolled in the school’s Junior College. Villafranco has not only made the entire country proud, he has also won SJC the School of the Year Award, which was held by Queen’s College in Guyana for the past four years. News Five met the impressive but modest student this afternoon at SJC, where he spoke about his academic success.
Dorien Villafranco, Top the Region in CSEC
“I definitely feel excited. You know I’m proud of myself and I’m sure everyone else is too. I’m really happy that all my hard work paid off in the end.”
Delahnie Bain
“What kind of work went into getting these scores?”
Dorien Villafranco
“Basically confinement to my room for like four years. So it’s a lot of work.”
Delahnie Bain
“I know it’s a long list so you don’t need to name all of them, but what kind of grades did you get to have topped everyone else?”
Dorien Villafranco
“I took fifteen CXCs and I achieved grade one in all fifteen.”
Delahnie Bain
“There are a bunch of prizes involved and so on. Can you tell us about those?”
Dorien Villafranco
“According to the press release I received, I’m supposed to be receiving a full scholarship to UWI, a plaque and some monetary prizes.”
Delahnie Bain
“Any advice for the other students upcoming that would like to achieve the same?”
Dorien Villafranco
“Have faith in yourself, have faith in God and just put in the hard work.”
Villafranco will take up his scholarship at the UWI campus in St. Augustine, Trinidad.
This is awesome…..Congrats and good luck!!
this is what belizeans should be doing am very proud of you dorien much more belizeans could be doing this instead they turn to stealing and murders and drugs i can tell you belizeans have the most smartest people in the world we could be a power house for math and sciences if we had a gov and pm who could lead but we do not we just have incompetence and corruption .
Very cool!!! Well done.
15 CXC passes!!! Excellent! It is so refreshing to read an article that is positive and shows our young people making great accomplishments. Keep up the good work Dorien! You are a shining example of what is possible with hard work and faith.

Young Belizean Boys & Girls. This is what is POSSIBLE. Do not talk about what you do not have! God will make a way when YOU put forth the hard work & dedication.
Education IS the key to unlock all doors! Dorien, just continue to put in the work but most importantly, allow your FAITH in God to be you strength! Congrats!
This should have been the first story!! We need some good news! OCNGRATS on a job well done!!
go deh mi lee bredda, prouod a you, if only more young people would follow your footstep.
you are a shining star in Belize city
Oilgirly, you are so right… “This should have been the first story!!”
Belize has a new shining star. I want to know his secret. His faith in God, perhaps? How is that possible in a such a God forsaken country? Come on Channel 5, find out more. Interview his teacher, his friends, parents. I’m sure they had something to do with his success and positive attitude.
Wow! It’s so wonderful to access the news and for a change read such an uplifting, encouraging, optimistic story—-rather than the usual crime, corruption and degeneration. I continue to pray that my beloved Belize will rise from the state of depravity to which it has sunken in recent years.
RETURN TO RIGHTEOUSNESS BELIZEANS!!!! AND LEADERS OF OUR COUNTRY, IT MUST BEGIN WITH YOU!!!!
congrats dorien!!!
ive told u this in person but yea!! Im a friend of Dorien and i have worked with him in high school.
Dorien is the type of person that always aims for the best and he certainly achieved it! His other classmates and myself had no doubt that he would come out on top!!!! The difference between Dorien and the other students at st.johns college and Belize is the drive he has to put in the time and effort needed to succeed.
Congrts to this youngman….another good news puts Belize on top in the Caribbean. I remember I took 5 cxcs and although I passed all five, got only 1 grade one. so for him to take 3 times as many and get all grade one, I can imagine the hard work.
