Pleas for help fall on deaf ears for 2 Hattieville residents
The process of restoring and rebuilding areas affected by hurricane Richard will continue for some time and patience is wearing thin for the victims. The Hattieville community was smack in the eye of the storm; hundreds were displaced and for two residents who lost everything, their pleas for help have fallen on deaf ears. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.
There are more cries for help coming from residents affected hurricane Richard. Therese Livingston called us out to Mile seventeen and a half on the Western Highway where her mobile home once sat. In its place, there is now the wreckage that Richard left behind. We also met Wallace Rubio, another victim who was displaced when the storm toppled his house.
Therese Livingston, Hurricane Victim
“The mobile just flip ova bout three time and everything burst open and I noh know everybody just come tek weh dehn want. Matthew, I stayed here because I was not afraid because I am a child of God but the next one my sister said come out and praise God that I came out because I would have been a casualty.”
Wallace Rubio, Hurricane Victim
“I lost everything, mi stove everything get bruk up and thing. The bed, everything get damaged. I mi di try brace it, I mi di try brace it with some iron and thing but I done know ih noh mi wah safe so I gone stay dah wah lady house out so weh mi more secure cause I know dis mi wah come down wid me if I mi stay een deh.”
Like many other affected persons, the two hurricane victims have been unsuccessful in seeking assistance.
Therese Livingston
“It is so sad because I went down to Belize today and I went to see Boots but he said he doesn’t deal with rural, come back to Hattieville. I have already been to Hattieville. Last week Thursday, nobody call I just left name and number and that is all that’s happening. Everybody, Miss what is your name and number and that is all. Nobody get in contact with me. It’s like I don’t exist.”
Wallace Rubio
“All I get dah two pound ah flour, two pound ah rice, two sausage, one toilet paper and two pound ah beans and di beans dehn mash up, old beans.”
Delahnie Bain
“So what else do you need?”
Wallace Rubio
“I need some food and I would ah want my lee house get back together cause dah deh I mi live.”
Livingston feels that while many who are in need are suffering, there are others taking advantage of the available supplies.
Therese Livingston
“Nobody is taking on what I suffer, nobody. And I appreciate what you all doing for me because I went everywhere and it’s like I don’t even feel like I’m alive and then it’s so sad that people are capitalizing on other people’s loss. They don’t know what you are feeling inside. They are just taking advantage of the situation and getting things that they don’t even deserve. And people out here need things but oh they are just having fun.”
Both Livingston and Wallace have been forced to beg lodging with friends and family. Delahnie Bain for News Five.

your prime minister doesnt care about you he couldnt care less if you are starving or homeless instead he goes on vacation and spends 10thousand dollars between barbados and miami for him and his family unu betta tend to unu self because judas barrow no the help nobody but heself and y family with what y spend on this last vacation y couda mi feed 20families fu a month but instead he and his wife staying in the best hotels eating steak every day . unu get it yet belizeans.
Some two months ago through this medium I question the wisdom of sending BDF LIGHT ENGINEERS to Haiti during the hurricane season. Now that hurricane Richard has made a call , they are not here and no mention is made of them.
Rubio maybe if you clean up yourself someone would give you a job and then you can take care of yourself indeed. It is not a sin or shame if we all strive to be self sufficient.
A famous quote: “Ask not what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country”.
Rigth on it CEO. Everybody expect free thing.
We need a lot more folks like the CEO in Belize. We should have pride in ourselves and the ability to take care of ones family. The true purpose of a Goverment is only to protect it’s people so that they can live out their potential.
It seems like hardly anybody is helping these people in Hattieville affected by Richard. Human Services, Area reps, etc, please try and focus also on the other areas besides the so called Ground Zero. There are families in Hattieville, with children who are still sleeping on the muddy floor, in the Hattieville Community Center. Rubio, (as dirty as he might look) has to come on TV and plead his case because it seems that they are forgotten.
What we have to realize that a lot of Belizeans are two to three paychecks away from being homeless and a storm like Richard, can set us back some 6 months or maybe even years. Let’s try to be less judgmental here and focus on why Rubio is in the news; At least he’s not in the news for a shooting, rape, or armed robbery.
Again, KIDS ARE SLEEPING ON MUDDY FLOOR AT HATTIEVILLE COMMUNITY CENTER AND THEIR AREA REP, MINISTER HUTCHIE IS MIA!
We as a people definitely need to help ourselves. Since Hurricane Richard all we’ve been hearing about is Belize City when the hurricane blasted through so many other places. Look at Belmopan, those people were up as soon as the all clear was announced, helping each other and building back with NO HANDOUTS. Get a clue and let’s get our act together Belize…Let’s get out of this mindset of only waiting for handouts!
I AM NOT QUITE SURE WHAT THE YOUNG MAN’S APPEARANCE HAS TO DO WITH ANYTHING IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE AND I DONT BELIEVE HE’S LOOKING FOR A HAND OUT JUST A ‘HELPING HAND’ DURING THIS HARD TIME AND DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCE, THAT BY THE WAY DIDNT OCCUR, BASED ON ‘HOW HE LOOKS’.
