Oops! Police arrest wrong person for murder of Spanish flight attendant

Police are still trying to close in on leads in the other murder in San Pedro of Spanish flight attendant, thirty-seven year old Maria Antonia Plaza Gomez who was strangled to death on October thirty-first. Late last Friday evening San Pedro police detained a man who matched the description of the suspect in whose company Plaza was last seen alive. Cops transported the man from Caye Caulker to the San Pedro but he was soon released when it was confirmed that the visitor had arrived in Belize after the murder had taken place.  The visitor reportedly cut his hair to avoid any further incidents of mistaken identity.

Maria Antonia Plaza Gomez

Maria Plaza Gomez went missing somewhere on Coconut Drive after eleven on the morning of Sunday October thirty-first.  Her body was discovered under a house in a private property just a few hundred yards from Corona del Mar Hotel where she stayed on the island.  Her severely mutilated body was covered with a large inflatable floater and the gifts which she had just purchased with her credit card from a gift shop just minutes before she went missing were found near her body.   Plaza Gomez was scheduled to leave the island that same Sunday to report to her job as an attendant on the two o’clock flight to Belize City.

This is all bs A crack head in Caye Caulker turned this man in, he has spent the last six winters here. They, police, beat and robbed the man he is now in Mexico. The man has been here since early September. Nice way to treat a retuning tourist!!!!

  2. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

Tourists mostly commit smaller crimes and not even to tourists like themselves, for example Insurance fraud, abusing drugs etc not murder. This killing was done by a Belizean, living and working/hustling on the island. Because her purse and belongings were at the scene it could have easily been done by someone that was rejected by her. (She was last seen by the fruit vendor).

  3. BZNinCALI says:

If the Police had done nothing, we would have criticized them. We cannot exempt tourists & guests from our laws & if there is reason to believe that they may have a crime, they should be treated like everyone else. Murdered tourists are not good for business.

  4. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

The law should not bend or break when a murder or crime is committed in Belize by foreigners or citizens of Belize, the punishment should be just as extreme. I would also like to state here that even without the murder of Miss Maria Plaza Gomez the crime wave in Belize today is affecting tourism, Belizeans abroad don’t want to go back home after reading the news, foreigners been told how dangerous Belize has become, and instead head to Guatemala or stay in Mexico and the corruption with the politicians is becoming yet another huge problem for Belize. When innocent Belizeans are killed I would very much like to see the news focus on them in a special way like they do when tourist are affected. It goes without saying that any murder, or crimes committed in Belize today is bad for tourism (Thanks to your media).

To BZNinCALI says What is the problem with questioning??? This Canadian man has broken bones was robbed. Treated like a Black man I saw beaten in LA CA USA in the 1980’s, 90’s. Without REASON beating is really doing something, IT IS proving that VIOLENCE is used without reason and stealing is accepted as common practice no matter who da thief!!! Another spike in the tourism coffin.

  6. BZNinCALI says:

Bruce, there is nothing wrong with asking questions or challenging what we see & read. Police brutality exists everywhere & should not be tolerated anywhere. Many of us who remember what it was like to walk in Belize any time of day or night hate what is going on. Some of us tried to address it years ago before it got this bad. We can make excuses for what we have become but none are valid. Parents have to take responsibility for their children & allow them to face the consequences when they break the law. Our boys are killing each other over BS, how long did anyone believe the tourists would be off limits?.

Arrests doesn’t mean you are guilty, it just means you are a SUSPECT, so you people should be happy that the police has probable cause to arrest people they feel is involved. When the police don’t get someone right away you cry they’re not doing there job, they do something and you still cry, why don’t you people go do your own investigation since you don’t have anything to do.

  8. DactaFly says:

where is Estradabran post mortem report, what is the cause of death, was she raped, was DNA samples recovered. the world is looking at us to solve this crime….or once again we will be the laughing stock to the world..

  9. realistic says:

The lady was brutally beaten, no rape nothing stolen, the culprit had obvious rage, maybe its time to get realistic and look outside the box! Why didn’t her husband come to pick up the body?? Maybe he collected a hefty life insurance??/ There are many possibilities and they should all be looked at and followed up on……

  10. a friend of the victim's says:

Realistic, you really show no sensitivity, do you? You don’t really know what we have been thru here in Spain, and you must be so insensitive that you can’t even imagine; otherwise, you wouldn’t be so cruel to say that about her husband, or an insurance. I find your comments absolutely revolting. Do wish you never land yourself in this situation. I’m sure your words wouldn’t be the same. Shame on you for your comment!!! 🙁

  11. Jose says:

A friend of the victim, some people make love to make uninformed comments. As far as I know, from the news, her husband came for her body. Please don’t get the wrong image as Realistic, is not representative of Belize.

Im sure you have been through a lot and please know that most Belizeans feel your pain. I had the opportunity speak to her the night before at the park and she seemed to be a very nice person. I’m still shocked to know that someone would cause her any harm.
