Murder suspect, Kenroy Mejia, murdered
In our newscast on Friday we left you with the story of Eric Savery, the notorious street figure who was killed on East Canal on Friday afternoon. A little over twenty-four hours later, a minor was executed as he slept at an abandoned house in close proximity to the Savery murder scene. It is not known if the two homicides are linked, but Kenroy Mejia relocated to Belize City seven months ago and had been questioned in the October murder of a fruit vendor. The minor’s body was found early on Sunday morning. News Five’s Isani Cayetano found out that Mejia was shot twice in the head.
Friends of seventeen year old Kenroy Mejia are today busy removing the vestiges of what used to be his home on Dean Street. Among the pieces of makeshift furniture lies a blood-soaked sponge on which he was discovered motionless on Sunday morning. The abandoned residence, according to one neighbor, was a known hangout spot for several young men in the area. Over the weekend ‘Kenny G’ who moved to Belize City from Dangriga seven months ago was executed in his sleep.
Voice of: Friend of Kenroy Mejia
“Sunday morning I get up and I mi want some tacos right and Mejia da my run man. Everything I say Mejia deal with this fu me or buy that fu me he ready fu move fu mek a lee dalla or two right cause nothing noh di go ahn wid di young bwai so I mek ih do all di runs deh fu me weh ih could mek da lee dalla or two. So I holla like five times. I come outta my house and holla like five times, holla fu Mejia [and] I noh get no response. Soh em di dread from, my landlord tell me ‘ah noh think Mejia sleep up deh last night yoh noh.’ So when I come backa my yard and I look upstairs ah di spot I see di door open and di window deh open so I mih feel like Mejia done get up already so I still like my mind tell me still go up deh.”
Mejia’s friend walked up this flight of stairs to a small room adjacent to a huge fruit tree. What he came across took him by complete surprise.

“When I reach up deh I stop da di door and I see Mejia pan ih bed right and I say Mejia again like that and I noh get no response and I move closer. I move closer [and] Mejia still eena di position weh ih di sleep long with ih sheet ova ah cover up and ih got on a black warm cap pan ih head and ih gah ih head turn to the wall. When I look ova Mejia I see ah hole right by ih temple; all ih, everything and I see like some blood mi di drain pan di side ah ih head weh done dry up then I hold di man like dis and when I hold Mejia I shake ah and say bwai Mejia, Mejia [but] di man stiff, stiff like piece a board.”
Kenroy Mejia had been shot twice in the head and left for dead in his bedroom. His bloodstained sheets indeed suggest that he wasn’t discovered until almost eight hours after the incident. His neighbors recall hearing the faint sound of gunshots earlier that morning.
Voice of: Friend of Kenroy Mejia
“Dehn mi tell me dehn mi yer two gunshots eena di night bout 1:30 soh yeah but dehn say dehn mi think da pop shot because then when dehn yer it weh ih mussi eena closed up place ih sound far. Ih neva sound hard enough cause I live right downstairs and I noh yer nothing.”
But who would want the teenager dead? A recent check of his criminal background reveals that he was arrested on October 8th for the murder of twenty year old Carlos Sucuqui, a fruit vendor, on West Canal. It is not certain whether Mejia’s death was an act of reprisal for that vicious slaying. Residents however, have had enough of the decrepit building being used as a base for the neighborhood gang and have taken matters into their own hands.
Voice of: Friend of Kenroy Mejia
“We gotta dismantle the building because originally my lee bredda, I got wah lee bredda and dah he build di spot and he got wah lotta young bwai, a lotta teenagers dih come di heng out right and I does lone tell ah bout di spot because if yoh notice back deh noh got no fence and dehn say gunman like come through the alley da back. So I dih tell dehn bwai unu cyant dih heng da dis spot cause dis spot dangerous yo dig and like dih same thing happen.”
Ironically the weekend murder of Kenroy Mejia succeeded that of thirty-seven year old Eric Savery which occurred a stone’s throw away on East Canal last Friday the day Mejia celebrated his seventeenth birthday. Isani Cayetano for News Five.
The justice system cannot convict, so the streets will deal with the problem & we will have to get used to it.
Is the sound of gunshots like background music & we just ignore it now? And where are his parents?
We have to get back to our roots where we have extended families living together, looking out for each & we only send our children to places where they have somewhere to stay & a close friend or relative to act as a substitute parent.
WHERE IS THE CHURCH???????????????????????
WHY ARE THEY NOT TRYING TO DO SOMETHING…………………………………………..ANYTHING!!!
THE CHURCHES HAVE FAILED US……..
