Spoken Word Competition; a safe space for the youth

Finding appropriate and creative activities for the youth may not always be an easy task, especially in an age when the interests of teens are highly diverse and fickle. However, the Youth Voices led by Global Parish group is attempting to create a safe space for youth while exploring the digital arts, documentary storytelling and poetry.  One of the organizers of the group told News Five that on Sunday they will be canvassing for youths to sign up for their program.

Sarina Heusner, Organizer, Youth Voices led by Global Parish

“On Sunday at five p.m., at the Battlefield Park we’re having a Spoken Word Competition. It will be in conjunction with signing up for the whole project. Applicants must be between the ages of sixteen and twenty-two and it is for a course that teaches them film documentary.”

Jose Sanchez

“The signing up for it, is it only for video related purposes?”

Sarina Heusner

Sarina Heusner

“No we have storytelling, poetry, photography. It’s all in there.”

Jose Sanchez

“This is something primarily for the youth?”

Sarina Heusner

“Yes, because the age range is between sixteen and twenty-two.”

Jose Sanchez

“This project that the group is undertaking, where do you expect it to go? Is it only a one event thing?”

Sarina Heusner

“No because the whole entire project spans two years. Among the lineup of performers is Erron Golanche beat-boxing. Doing poetry, we have Ritamae Hyde and Raspin from Hopkins.”

This is something great for the youth. It is also a part of our heritage. Listening to Tom Greenwood years ago when he did the Nansi stories on the radio many moons ago was very entertaining, so was Mr. Young whom I heard a decade ago. This can only help our children & I would love to hear & see things from their perspective.
