Darrel Grant found guilty for the murder of Sandra Ruiz

Late this evening, a jury of eight women and four men who had deliberated for four hours seventeen minutes emerged with a unanimous verdict of guilty against twenty-four year old Darrel Thomas Grant who was accused of the murder of Sandra Ruiz. On the night of Sunday, August tenth, 2008 at about ten-thirty p.m., Ruiz’s home was invaded by thieves who brutally beat her up and raped her in the presence of at least one of her two daughters. Grant gave police a caution statement in which he implicated himself as being one of the men who were inside Ruiz home that fatal night but said that it was his partner in crime who inflicted the blows to Ruiz he only held her.

In the end though I am appointed by the court—I don’t want no body seh Dickie rush out there again—in the end, the matter and the family came over to me after the trial because they understand what is happening in the court. In the end when the doctor evidence come out in court how Sandra Ruiz died, this is an unusual thing for us in Belize.

Sandra Ruiz was hammered multiple times, she was beaten many times in her head, she was beaten many times on her body, she was beaten in her chest, her ribs were broken, her teeth were broken, her jawbone which the doctor explained in the court is the strongest bone in the body that was broken. The base of the skull was fractured, the brain was damaged. It is a shocking situation and hopefully we can later on find out how that can come about because we don’t behave like that in Belize. We are shooting and looting but we are not beating up women in that fashion. Not even in all the rapes that have come to the Supreme Court over the years, do you hear that type of thing.”

Defense Attorney Dickie Bradley was appointed by the court to represent Grant. And though Bradley has represented a lion’s share in criminal proceedings, the senior attorney was particularly appalled at the details he learned about the rape and murder of Ruiz. Justice Lucas has reserved sentencing for next week Thursday where a mitigation plea will be heard on his behalf.
IMHO this is not the first time Dickie has been appalled, but can probably be the first time he has not been paid by the defendant to defend, hence the soft appearance.

Justice served? I do not think so. Cause I dont think he is sorry for what he has done. No remorse on the it, Whatever sentence he gets, Sandra Ruiz is still dead, children still without a mother. Somewhat in a nice way to say justice is serve, but in reality, I dont think by all means it is. What if he gets a sentence of 20 yrs or 30 yrs, but then when he comes out and he is the same, while he is out, he kill another? Who can gurantee that he will or he will not? But deepest symbathy to the family and I hope they can put their minds to rest at least that!
I am tired of hearing that. A plea will be taken, and the guy will spend many years in Jail. Nonsense, please bring back capital punishment. The innocent receive blows to the head, and beaten to death. The guilty however, can sit until death without pain.

Dickie, we have been unkind to you, most of it justified but I do understand that the court appointed you, you have to do your job & I appreciate you letting DPP win this one. Good job DPP.
We haven’t even heard the sentence passed down and there are those who say justice has not been served? What would you like? Perhaps a firing squad to execute him at the swing bridge will do? Just let the people in charge do their job, every wants justice for Sandra and her family as we are so sick of these scums in our midst but what sentence can really be given? I am hoping for life sentence but Human Rights has tied everyone hands. Mr Bradley, I am glad you explained some points because I have definitely criticised you in the past for defending these scums. However I still ask, why you? Can you decline some of these cases? Your name has been linked to some many of these high profile murder cases that I have lost count. Certainly I wouldn’t want my name linked with these guys in any way. I guess it’s a tough job and someone has got to do it.

There are always so many of us advocating for the death penalty. Why is it that in Belize we cannot bring back this punishment if the citizens request it. Take a vote and if the majority wins reinstate the death penalty. We have rights as the citizens of this beautiful country to protect it. If this is the way we chose to do it the so be it. Enough pussy footing around, get on with it. Clear some space out at the prison for all the THIEF stealing from our country and livin’ large off my children’s future. Put it to a vote!!!

DeeDee, if it wasn’t so serious I would laugh. The idea of a firing squad sound good and I’d join you. What do we do with these MFs. A young woman was brutally murdered by this animal. I have a feeling there was more than one person there. As RadicalBz said we have no end of Human Rights laws holding us back from executing these animals though. I feel the frustration.

I think he will be afraid soon. I do not think this family and friends will rest until he pays. Simply because capital punishment is not good enough for him? My hunch is that he betta watch his back esp. in prison.
