Humanitarian Association victimized in Benque Viejo
We have featured several human interest groups over the years and most become an integral part of the communities they assist. While that is true in most cases, a group called the Humanitarian Association, despite its many charitable contributions, is being pushed out of Benque Viejo. Believe it or not, it’s the Health Department that wants the association gone. News Five spoke via phone to one of the organizers of the group who says they are being victimized.
Via Phone: Linda Luna, Humanitarian Association
“We are at the Humanitarian Association the building belonging to the Health Department. We have been requested verbally to give them the keys. We haven’t given them the keys because it means that we are relinquishing all our stuff there and they have not given us a reason why we should give them the keys. We are adults and we should be communicating and to no avail have they gotten back to us with any written request for the keys. We’ve held activities on Saturday for the children, we are working with the community, we have socials for the elderly. We have Christmas parties for the needy and the elderly. We even volunteer money out of our pockets to work for the community and now this is happening that they want the keys. But we don’t know for what purposes that they want the keys.”
Jose Sanchez
“Are they providing an alternative place for you to go?”
“No they haven’t because they are not communicating with us through letters or anything. All there is asking for keys. We had one lady, Miss Balona that came to a nurse’s house to pick up the key. That is not the way thigns should be handled.”
Jose Sanchez
“At what point do you need to vacate the building?”
Via Phone: Linda Luna
“Well according to politics. That’s what we’ve been hearing that they want us out of there for another group. This is all politics.”
Sources say that a relative of a minister wants to use the building to house her woman’s group.
STANDING ON PRINCIPLE…………..do not give in with out a fight.
Stay there until you get word from the Director/Minister in charge of that agency, and make sure it is in writing. Also, let the community know what is transpiring should they need help and appear at your location and see a sign that says “CLOSED FOREVER”. This is so sorry, people trying to help citizens and they want to take away the little resource available. From the picture you don’t even have a 20″ butane stove, OMG, yet you have this PORK BARREL OFFICIALS driving in fancy vehicles and living large from BZ TAXPAYERS. MAY THE LORD BE WITH YOU.
Hi Linda:
I have no idea what part Contreras is playing in all this but I would suggest you contact him and make him aware of the situation and the contribution the organization makes to the community of which he is a native of. If you find out that he is part of the problem, then gather as much of the people who benefit from the organization and of those who support the organization and go to Belmopan to see Mr. Marin and if need be, Mr. Barrow himself. Do not give up the place without a fight.
Good Grief, will it ever stop with these Politicians and their families who are given special priviledges in every thing. Why can’t that Politician find another site for his relative and leave the organization who’s occupying that building to continue doing their good work.
The Humanitarian members, is grateful for your comments and advices, we thank you all. We believe that when we give to our community we contribute to progress. Politics is Election day, after that it is us the people, not some, it is EVERYONE. Power to all who will Stand Up for good causes, progress, and not be embarrassed of being pointed at, and criticized. Let us say no to VICTIMIZATION. I’ve now leaned that the media is available. Let’s use it.
