PM says new albums will help Music Ambassador promote Belize

Moshe Levi Ben David, formerly known as Shyne, has been making international news following his conversion to Judaism and the release of his second album. As you know, when he returned to Belize last October, having completed a prison term in the United States, Shyne was appointed Music Goodwill Ambassador. We haven’t heard much about the fruits of that appointment and that may be because Shyne is busy rebuilding his career. When asked today about his appointment, the prime minister defended his son’s ambassadorial status.

“He’s called a new country his home? I wasn’t aware of that. Rihanna is the cultural or musical ambassador for Barbados. She makes her home between the United States and Barbados. Why is that a problem? If a Belizean can do well abroad and can help to bring credit to the name of Belize, help to bring attention to the name of Belize, help with tourism, help in any other way; why would we turn our backs on that? I would hope for my son’s sake that the record or records that I hear that are about to be released, would make it big. If they don’t then perhaps the judgment I just spoke about may have to be revised.”
Belize has bestowed the title of Music Goodwill Ambassador and the honor and prestige that goes along witht it upon an UNDESERVING person who DOES NOT CARE about Belize. Moreover, his music, if you can call it that, represents one segment of society–there are far more accomplished and learned Belizean musicians who could easily do a far better job with that designation both at home and abroad. In any event, his criminal record alone should suffice in disqualifying him from carrying that title. To compare Shyne to Rihanna is outrageous. Which toursits will come to Belize as a result of Shyne–gang members, former inmates,…?? He is using Judaism to appeal to American Zionists to gain re-entry to the US. If Hammas or Hezbollah fail to get to him (for the record I am not endorsing anti-semitism), I hope the Americans do allow him back–best he be there than doing nothing for Belize here! Shame on the PM for this blatant example of nepotism–especially for a son who is nothing but an embarrasment to this country!

check this… Israel constitution says that “every person born to a Jewish mother automatically becomes an Israeli citizen when they arrive in Israel”. They call it the “Law of Return”. So that means Shyne is now a citizen of Israel! So guess what Shyne? You’ve got 3 years of mandatory military service to fulfill, as required by every citizen of Israel over the age of 18, or upon completing high school. Have fun in Gaza!
Of course there is an out clause. He has 90 days to refuse Israeli citizenship. How you feel ’bout your “new home” now?

The people that disagree with Dean Borrow’s politics are the same people that is hating against his son and I don’t see why. I have a lot of Shyne’s music, and from some of the things he said in his music about his pops, he doesn’t even seems to like is dad. As far as him being an ex-con for something he deemed was selfdefense, and him being deported, he seems to be doing very well. How many other “deportees” are on MTV, BBC, and on magazine cover? How many other “deportees” have celeberities coming to the Jewel to visit with them? Don’t be jealous. Step your game up haters!

I really do think that there should be an assessment as to who Belize’s music ambassador should be, no doubt. However, the fact that he’s a convict should not be the issue. If memory serves those of us who actually live in Belize correctly, then we’ll remember that it was Byrne, the famous deportee, who brought some heart, zeal and professionalism to the music scene in Belize. We have many talented, unsung musicians in Belize, but they either don’t know how to or have not developed that shameless knack for self-promotion that is so prevalent in the music “business” today (there is more to it than talent). If we believe that we could do better, then we need to start seriously supporting our local musicians like we believe they have something to offer, instead of spending our energy disparaging somebody, who regardless of what we think of his music, knows how to bring attention to himself, his music and everything with which he is associated.

He doesn’t have to be living in Belize to be the music ambassador. The big stars and celebrities make their homes all over the world but their place of birth is where people recognise them for, eg Madonna lived in Britain for a number of years until recently, Rihanna from Barbados but lives in USA, Gwyneth Paltrow in Britain but she is an american, many of the Reggae artists lived either in Britain or US but they are recognised as Jamaicans etc, However I don’t imagine many Belizeans could comprehend such concept because they think small. They would prefer him living in Boom, such is their mentality. This man did his crime and serve his time, and clearly reformed and rehabilitated. Furthermore, many of the US musicians the Belizeans are willing to sing and dance to the their tunes have spent time in prisons, yet their own country man (Shyne) they act like a jackass against him.
Do-di-right-thing: I think the lyrics of the song is between the artist and his father to discuss. Not for you to take on board. Many of the rapper stars talk about their b*t%h and w*ores and they are referring to their girls and wives. I think it is unacceptable but such is their language. So I suggest you don’t read too much into it. I also understand him wanting to get out of Belize as soon as he could because of the facilities for his career and the mentality of the people who can’t separate his Dad career from his.
And another thing, the artist formerly known as Prince Rogers Nelson changed his name from Prince to the unpronounceable symbol between 1993 and 2000. He has subsequently gone back to being called Prince I bet that didn’t affect him in any way. SO why we spend time bothered about this young man, why won’t you support the guy?
I spoke to a young man in Belize City a couple days ago and he said to me, Belizeans support anybody if they are foreign, as young black man I don’t stand a chance, with jobs or any application because Belizeans like foreigners. That was his words and I was struck by it. I thought how can a young man be born and raised in this country and feel this way. Well when I see these hateful comments, which is similar to the ones of Jessel, the beauty queen a couple weeks ago, I understand fully where this young man was mentally. We need to stop these bloody-mindedness and support our youths. This can also explain the large number of young men do nothing with their lives in Belize because there are an overwhelming number of Haters, people who sit back and try to cut you down and keep you back. People who DONT want to see anyone doing anything and making progress in life.

CHICAGORILLA, you’re right about some of the criticism. As an “outside” child, Jamal could not develop the same relationship with his father that the two with Lois or the one with the current wife has with him & the name calling is probably just a reflection of the resentment he feels & many of us know can come from only hearing one side most of our lives. Boyz 2Men sang about their Mama, so did the Spinners, Jimmy Dean did an excellent tribute to his mother which we used to play on Mothers Day &so did many others. Prince’s description of his father in “When Doves Cry”, @$$hole, the Temptations sang Pap was a Rolling Stone, Johnny Cash did the Boy named Sue, Peter Burdon ; the House of the Rising Sun, none of those were flattering to men, the only difference is Jamal’s father is our PM & we are seeing their craziness up front.
I do not buy any excuses after the fact, he was tried & convicted by a jury of his peers & he had competent legal representation. The difference between he & many others who have been convicted in the US Justice system is the fact that he may have taken the fall for someone with deep pockets. Jennifer Lopez’ threaded the needle & her Public Relations people used the attention from that incident to advance her career. Jamal was the only one who served time & we do not know if the celebrities who have shown up in Belize to visit him took the time to visit him in jail or if they showed up to negotiate his continued silence.
What I am hearing is an angry child who wants his father to feel the way he felt. I may not agree with having him as our musical ambassador but I have to give Dean credit as a father, he has not allowed the resentment this child feels toward him keep him from treating him as a son.

Are u freaking kidding me? I know i did not just read that this man compared his deportee son – who calls Israel home – to Rihanna! Mr Barrow – get serious – your son does NOT consider Belize home and therefore cannot serve as musical ambassador. This young man has decided to make his home abroad, which is iok, since everyone is entitled to live where they please iof given the chance. However, many other Belizeans are more qualified for that position and would love the opportunity. Rihanna does live between both Barbados n the US, however she has never forsaken her country. She has never been shamed of her heritage n i would go as far as to say that she has done many things for her country. I think Jamal/Shyne/Moses/Moshe should b recalled – if he cannot decide on a name, a place to call home or if he wants to b associated with his father or not, how can he decide to promote our music, culture n musicians?
