Chief Justice candidates narrowed down, but who will choose?
Prime Minister Dean Barrow also responded to a question about the appointment of a new Chief Justice to replace Abdulai Conteh who left at the end of September. According to the PM, there is a short list but as to whether the Bar Executive will be invited to the selection process; he says he hasn’t quiet made up his mind.
Dean Barrow
“We’re very much closer in fact there is a short list that I want to propose for the consideration of an advisory group that I would want to convene. I see five, certainly four, possibly five of the candidates that applied as being worthy of further consideration.”
Jules Vasquez, Channel 7
“Would that constituency, advisory group constitute membership from Bar? The president said she was hoping you would write her indicating that you have an interest in having them on board.”
Dean Barrow
“Well the bar association—a member of the bar hearing that I was looking to take holiday said that I should, she thought I was being miserable because of what I said in the house that Friday. The Bar Association or the Bar Executive clearly is playing some games, but let me reflect on that. I certainly, the advisory group would have to comprise members of the bar. I do have some reservations because of what I said. People in front of one of whom they will have to appeared would be grilled by them. But the bar obviously feels strongly about it and maybe, maybe not withstanding the drawbacks, that is the way to go. So I will commit that I will certainly ask members of the bar to be part of this advisory group. Whether it is I say to president, you select the persons and send them to me or whether I say I would wish to invite the following members is something I have not yet decided.”
The Prime Minister has said that the new CJ will be installed in January next year.
THE FLAME OF THE IMMIGRATION SCANDAL HAVE FADED AWAY….the illegal landing of airplanes and the distribution of Belizean visas…….
NO MORE PRESSURE??? WHERE ARE THE UNIONS, ASSOCIATIONS, OPPOSITION???
Aparentemente, los Beliceños son muy conformistas y no exigen la verdad!!!
We need CITIZENS of Belize……..but apparently Belize does not have citizens…I mean real citizens that demand from the Government, citizens that are involved directly and indirectly in the Affairs of Belize, citizens that keep government on check and accountable, citizens that are aware of their RIGHT and RESPONSABILITIES, etc….
One of the issues I see with the Govt’ is that its trying to lead by consensus. This as result of lack of transparency and accountability by past administrations. This applaudable step however can lead to unecessary logjams and stall critical decisions. (e.g. BTL sale) The PM needs to do what he needs to do, and as long as it is just and right, he will have no problems with the common people.
Tell me , why in the name of justice does the Bar association need to vette the new CJ. That in it self is a contradiction and can be percieved to prejudice the natural order of justice . They have no power to hire or fire a CJ… Why, Why, Why ????
