Guatemalan man gets the push of death

In other news, a forty-nine year old Guatemalan National, who was living in Dangriga is dead tonight. According to police, on Thursday morning Henry Enriquez Petillo, was drinking and got into an argument with a woman on St. Vincent Street, near a fruit shop. The woman’s son, Edilberto Martinez, intervened and pushed Petillo away from his mother. An inebriated Petillo staggered backwards, fell off the sidewalk and hit his head on the pavement. Police soon arrived on the scene and rushed him to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Martinez is now in police custody, but it has not yet been determined what charges will be levied against him. The incident is not being treated as a murder at this point, because there would have to be proof that Martinez intended to kill Petillo. Dangriga Police have informed News Five that they will seek the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions on how to proceed.

Sounds like a clear cut case of motherly defense, I know that we only talk of maternal instinct but there certainly exist within a child the instinct to protect his mother in a situation where she appears to be threatened, don’t Belize have laws against public drunkenness? This probably could have all been avoided if this guy wasn’t drunk.

I hope he doesn’t get charged for this. Clearly he was defending his Mother from an aggresive drunk. Fortunately he didn’t have a machete on him, or she could have been ‘chopped’.

The son didn’t even punch the guy, just pushed him back, and his drunken state did the rest. Very sad for his family, but it was an accident. There was no intent to kill or even harm, unless of course, there is more to this story than what was reported…….

Constant alcohol consumption weakens bones & thins the already fragile bones around the temples. If this man wasn’t drunk he probably would not have been arguing with the woman & would have had some control over his reflexes to help break his fall. None of us would stand by and watch our parents especially our mothers get assaulted verbally or physically by anyone.

Send the woman’s son home & get back to arresting people for public drunkenness, disturbing the peace & being drunk & disorderly, Fine them enough to cut into their habit, it may save a life.
